Which is why men should never be pillion - it makes you feel insecure which makes you fall off.

At least he was in gear. How many pillions aren't?

I've fallen asleep a few times while pillion when I was younger. Usually the bike was loaded with gear so I had a nice backrest to stop me at least sliding of the back.

Hmmm,
My Wife will doze quite often on the daliy comute, hard to fall off with the packrack.

That's hilarious. I couldn't do it. I keep a vigilant eye on the road if I'm ever pillioning, and make strategic tuck-and-roll decisions in my head just in case. (paranoid much?)

Pillions falling asleep is downright dangerous... I'd hate to think what would happen if the pillion awoke mid corner and got spooked from seeing the scenery blazing past so quick.

I guess it depends on the pillion, Mine is on the bike 4 days a week to and from work, so over the years has become the perfect passenger :)

and they say speed is dangerous? obvioulst 100km.hr is so slow that it bored the pillion to sleep - and then he fell off... Raise the speed limit!!!

Good point, but my pillion is a motorcyclist as well and claims she feels "unsafe" when she is "not in control of the bike", which is fair enough. She's only fallen asleep once out of tiredness, when I rode from Johnsonville to Auckland central in one hit, only stopping for fuel.

There we go.
Us riders make the worst pillions :)

depends on the pillion. Riders hate the lack of control, but I've had several non-riding pillions fall asleep. They get very comfortable, trust the rider and just nod off. Even on a ZX10, with no back support. Can't understand it myself

Mrs Shrek has pilloned for the last 25years & on the long hauls quite often falls asleep, i don't mind until she rests her helmet against mine, gives me a sore neck, but other than that we've never had any probs

Duct tape is even better! (Imagine Dumb and Dumber but with duct tape...it's been done.)

I've got no problem with falling asleep while I'm being pillion. I trust the rider, and if I didn't, I wouldn't hop on the back of their bike.
The only time I've ever felt like I was going to fall off was when the rider popped a wheelie when I wasn't expecting it. I will never hop back on the bike with them.

Yep your right there, when skipping along my pillion stays wide awake, 100kph starts to doze off but if I catch her doing it zig and zag through the white strips in the centre of the road that gets her attention again..

Never used to have pack rack, box or anyother thing behind me and never high footpegs
but always have my arms around Shrek  and knees tightly locked on his thighs
that way you go where the rider goes no matter what

I have been a pillion twice in my adult life and have been scared both times - no way I could fall asleep - nothing against the rider, I just hate the lack of control being a passenger.

My husband ditched his ex at the lights once - she put her feet down and he took off without her!!!!!! He should have kept going if he had any sense.............

I'm surprised to read how many actually do fall asleep on the back. So when you put all this into statistics, seems fairly safe.

I would imagine ACC would have a field day on this thought alone

suggest to her a pair of undies to prevent the "trails" being left on the seat.

Have had Pillions fall asleep on the back of the bike. This is where as the rider ya need ta stay aware of the pillion behind ya. I can usually notice if my pillions nod off and keep my riding very smooth if they feel balanced back there. Have had a pillion that was unsteady back there when they nodded off. Was BabyB's Daughter. BabyB was very safe nodding off as a pillion. But her daughter would start drifting off to one side or the other. Ya could easily feel the difference. I would slow down & easy the bike to a stop before waking her. Had ta ride one handed while holding her steady with other hand as I pulled off the road. Very scary, I tell ya. A pillion can really effect the steering of ya bike, even a light 0ne. My advise as a rider is always stay aware of ya pillion at all times. If they are feeling unsteady back there, slow down & look for a safe place ta pull over.
Have had male pillions on the back usually after their bike has broken down & we need ta get back ta home so they can get a trailer ta pick their bike up with. The trouble with male pillions is that they are often insecure about holding on ta the rider with their legs or being close ta the rider (especially if the rider is also male). It's a Gay phobia thing. This makes they much more likely ta come off IMHO. Just another thing as the rider ya need ta be aware about & ta ride taking that into a count. Save the showing off for when ya on the bike yaself & it is only your life ya putting at risk.

MamaJo falls asleep regularly on the back and the only way I can tell is, if I hit the brakes, we get helmet 'dook'. However we do have quite a supportive backrest on a Givi pannier.
