View Full Version : Are all ignition coils created equal? And reg/rectifiers? And well, anything?

.... As in , my coils are reading about 10kohms, the manual says 25. i've also started breakin down on motorways after like 5 mins of trying to keep up with the traffic... posing there for 20 mins waiting for the bike to magically fix it self, ....then jump starting, fun.
i am gunna assume they are gonesville.......
Can i just get, any ol' 12v coil? at the very least, a suzuki same era... 79-82...maybe? to aid in the mounting.
if i got a flash new bike one would that work?
What should One Look for, when buying a third party sparky coil?
Ditto reg/rect... just a matter of time....:soon:

Have you tested the stator?

Sounds like you are checking the secondary resistance. To swap coils you need ones with the same primary resistance, this varies with different ignition systems.

not yet...... ran out of light... god dam winter...... I have to jump start cause I've drained the battery trying to start it staraight after , although, .. y'know how when Yah leave a battery for a bit it just kind of, works? weird.

Aaaaah, which in my case would be... about 4ohms... ok, mine tested almost 0ohms, just enough to work, thanks.:Punk:

Old Suzukis had shit electrics right out of the crate. Thats just the way they are. Go here and read what you can do about it http://thegsresources.com/gs_garage.htm (there's a whole lot of good stuff about GS/GSX 's on this site

Cheers pete, yeah I've heard about there rep... good times. GSresources looks good, heaps about checking stators, nothing about anyone whackin Harley Coils in and .... something.

Double leads on the coil - fires every revolution. ie one coil goes to cylinders 1 and 4, other goes to 2 and 3. has a waste spark on the exhaust stroke but that doesn't normally hurt anything.

GSX250E spark plug caps have ceramic resistors in them and if broken can give the symptoms you've described. worth checking before spending coin. Also the plug leads themselves, if they're stiff and hard then they could also be past their use by date and could be breaking down internally....plug leads should be soft & supple.
Here's a quick fix for the ceramic resistors

Check your charging is ok first. It won't be & you need to fix it before it shags the ignition with over voltage.
As an aside my old GSX used to die on the motorway & after ages fix itself. Turned out to be a petrol filter crimped the flow so it starved carbs on high rpm running for a while. Course it was there as the tanks rust out.

Yeah, my tanks not the best.... inline filter and new thick pipe sounds like a good cheap investment. charging system, next day off here i come.
btw, i can only go max 100kph and it peaks at 6000rpm! this ain't normal.. ....is it?
i feel like I'm going through puberty asking my dad if "this is normal"!!l lol

Shot, new caps, done! one was 10k one was zip, now they're both 5k. cheers!

In-line filter will only strain out the big stuff. its bizarre how the rest gets through, but it does. Kreem or POR15 the tank. You can now buy right angled petrol filters (ask at bike shop), that will help as there is no room for a clean run. Originally the bike had a car filter that sat on the engine cases & a big loop of hose. That was silly for a gravity feed, but my straight filter crumpled when the tank went down unless extreme care taken. I got good at cleaning out the carbs as it used to get crud & run bad on a regular basis until I sealed the tank.
Airfilter ok? I tried new foam in mine, being a bit stoopid & going through puberty at the time I used some nice foam from Para rubber with some oil in it (original looked dirty & old). Didn't want to rev at all. Went somewhat better with proper filter foam.
Put a meter on the battery & rev the bike past 4 & tell us what you get. Multimeter at Dicky smitt or Jaycar should cost peanuts for their base model ($20 maybe) & is easy to use, just chuck it on 20 DC volts scale & read out.

Cheers Pete, will do. Funnily enough, when i first got the bike, the air filter DID have a big hunk'o'foam mattress in it! so got a lovely new one from welly bikes now.

Woo hoo! went for a 100km blat today in the freezin , WITHOUT breaking down. Could it all have just been the caps? awesome, thanks kids! :niceone:
Now i had a hoohoo at the battery chargin' , 14.7 v , but noticed my (-) t'was a bit lose...good good.
so now it's reliable, i just have to pick it up to it's 120kph former glory. Cheers KB

most likely :niceone:
they're good bikes when they're going properly

No all coils are not created equal.
A common upgrade on early Ducatis is to upgrade the coils to gaina vastly improved spark. We typically upgrade these to coils that provide greater than 30,000 volt output and replace the leads at the same time to Magnecors or similar. The improvement in running is almost unbelievable on these bikes.
When upgrading or replacing coils the primary reisistance is the most important value to match, but on some bikes a tolerance of up to 40% difference casues no issues.
