OK folks. Where are the good night clubs and bars in Auckland?

visiting auckland in september for a few nights with the Mrs and we aint had a good night out since coming to NZ almost 4 yrs ago. In our home city of Newcastle, there are literally hundreds of bars and dozens of nightclubs that get packed every weekend night......thats one of the few things i really miss about UK. So, we are in desperate need of busy, vibrant night clubs and bars, loud music, open til late. ..dancing girls are always a plus.......ala coyote ugly kinda thing...

where do you guys recomend?

Auckland town is pretty average, mainly full of 16-19 year olds, few decent clubs though I guess, all ya gotta do is head to the viaduct and you'll find them.

How old are you? What sort of music do you like when you go out? How long do you plan to be out? Are there any subcultures you & the mrs are into?

If you're, as I suspect, in your 30s there may be one or two bars along the viaduct you might like — Danny Doolan's, Soul Bar, Fox's Sports Bar, Cowboys & Indians (that last one is probably best when you're proper totalled).

You should have a looksee along Ponsonby Road as well. Take your pick along there — Long Room, Grand Central, Ponsonby Social Club, Lime, The Whiskey, Lolabar etc. etc.

If you're a raver from way back check out Ink on K'Rd — good mix of ages, good dance music, next door to Family if you're feeling adventurous, plus it is one of the only bars along K'Rd with a smoker's area as part of the club. If you're still going at 8am the next morning, it's only a 2min stroll to Supper Club which stays open til about 12pm (I think).

If you're wanting to hang with "the Beautiful People" then there's Sale St., La Zeppa, Flight Lounge, Be, Spy, the Raquet Club.

If you're into the urban funk thing then Khuja Lounge or Rakino's may be the way to go.

There's still a few more places I could think of but that should give you some ideas.

great reply matey.

yeah, in our 30s. wifeys into total pop dance stuff....and i' m a rocker. were good for long nights out.all nighter would be cool..if ive still got it in me! i really miss the hard rock / gothy clubs from uk. doubt there are any here though...dark.loud metal.......rock chicks .cool. basically, im happy if mrs is happy!

been into danny doolans a couple of times on visits........bloody expensive place that, although i d expect everywhere on viaduct is the same eh? or, are those prices.around 10 bucks a beer normal for central auckland? on saying that, i have paid twice that much in a night club in UK for drinks........like 22 bucks for a beer n dble vodka....great bar though!!! chicks dancing on the bar etc, great atmosphere n shots for a quid!

Keep an eye on these two (http://www.mukuna.co.nz) sites (http://www.undertheradar.co.nz) closer to the time you'll be up here. There's a few bars for metal — Live Bar, King's Arms and Transmission Room depending on what's happening the weekend you'll be up.

Yeah, those prices for drinks are pretty standard for the CBD. Probably why the wholesalers do so well on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

So are you definitely coming with us on Friday? Sounds like you know town better than I do...

Well after 4 years of living down in the eastern bay me and the wifey are having a weekend in auckland this weekend. in our late 30s and miss the busy nightlife of uk cities so we have some ideas of where to go.

we are staying off queen street

someone has suggested the K'oad area has lots of bars and clubs and the viaduct also.

can anyone also recomend .........

1. tepanyaki restaurant?

2. proper italian restaurant?( not just a run of the mill place that sells spag bog and pizza)

we were really spolt for choce in the uk for quality and range of restaurants, and down here in eastern bay, there is very limited choice.( but the weather is great)

so folks.........

any tips?

thanks in advance

.around 10 bucks a beer normal for central auckland?

That's about what you would pay for a pint of cheap, nasty pisswater. I usually take some alcohol with me when I go to clubs.

but thats naughty though aye? its common in uk for girls to carry 1/2 litre spirits bottles into bars but lots of clubs security staff check bags on the way in. does that happen here?
