Went there today with a mate. I didn't really get it. While they have nice bikes on display the food is very limited and we were the only (obvious) bikers there tho the place was packed. And are they just taking the piss with their prices??? $3000 for a gas tank??!!. $22500 for a W650 with some bolt on bits? I don't think the bike shop come cafe scene is for me. Maybe it's an Auckland thing?

The coffee is shite too and the service! We waited 40 minutes for our coffee........ but I would go back 'cos my Dad loves it and now that I ride we have lots of fun together.
Yes I sound like I am 5 but I have recently discovered the joy of biking with my old Dad.

There were heaps of bikers when I went there, but I was the only woman rider.

Maybe because I was using my iPhone ._.

For them to be asking $22000 for a WF it would have to be incredibly custom to say the least, still they will probably have the last laugh as someone will buy it.Wouldnt mind seeing a pic of it all the same.Over the years ive spent more on my old TL than its currently worth with one of bits/wheels etc none of which make its value any higher to anyone else bar me.

Billy Joel paid that for one what an idiot and after seeing pics of the bike I was dumbfounded I picked up a wrecked w650 for $500.00 and was going to hardtail it but got offered good money for it as is and needed the cash to finish my harley shovel and I think I could have built a similiar bike for $5000-6000.00 on the road.

Not if you build it yourself and buy the parts from the source. Saw a nice T shirt but at $90 I think i'll just print my own.

Been in there a few times to have a nosey as it's not far from work. They've got some nice bikes and the guys are really friendly and happy to chat bikes for ages, but there prices are bonkers. I was eying up building a kaff-racer based on a W650 and I could have built an almost identitcal bike to one in the shop for almost $10k less. Admittedly the guy was saying they rejet the carbs and set it up on a rolling road, but still, was a lot of pennies. Guess you're paying for the labour.

They seem to be catering for the rich late 30's/early 40's family guys who want one because they're 'cool'. Stopped by on a couple of weekends and I've never seen so many 4x4s and minted families in one spot. Must be the entire population of Remuera out for the day ;)

And that is it in one.
That is the crowd they are aiming for. the ones that still have disposable income. the ones that don't care what the price is.
the ones that will fork out cash and not go on KB and complain about the price or how trendy it tried to be.

Not for me but they have been there for a while now so they must be selling stuff.

Bugger! I always had plans to pick up a cheap W650 and custom it. Now the prices will rise!

One way to look at it - heaps of people drop 30k on a stock Harley or the like so 10 less for a built custom is possibly their angle. Heck have you seen the price of a Big Dog chopper or similar - mega-bucks.

$90 for a T - out of my league, but I am always amazed how many people pay that for one with a Nike label!

Nah its a Sydney thing.
I went to original shop @ camperdown when I lived there.
Bought a shirt, had some food, coffee etc.
Would go back an have another coffee - but as for buying another shirt, I can do my own out of aussie for cheaper. (http://www.cafepress.com.au/farrst)
However you should realize that people are willing to pay 100+K for a chopper, so paying $22K for a cafe is considered cheap. Especially when you compare with production prices for the likes of Triumph, Norton, Harley etc..... so not too expensive

Mate i had a bloke turn up at home today to show me some mods to his 1800 Honda, first up was an extremely well built fly screen thing, very nice but there was simply nothing to it,any oncoming air would simply laugh at its $600 price tag and carry on,next up was a V Max type bolt on intake:shutup: which made the thing a few feet wider and at $800 at least would keep the wind off his right knee, last but not by any means least a can only an inch or 2 shorter than the Titanic thing that was on there oem but instead of hiding the sound of a motor from the dark ages simply made sure the whole world was reminded of it,after spending all that dosh he sat back with crossed arms and a content smile as it sat there sounding worse than even a Subaru.Amazing what people will buy.

I will agree it's good for a coffee and a peruse of magazines and bikes but for the "custom" work they do it seems a bit expensive, a lot of the changes look like bolt-ons to me, I still yearn after greasy, oil smelling workshops but maybe I'm just getting senile.

Hmmm strange. I actually got better service at the one in Sydney......
When I was in Auckland one, had my coffee - then walked around oogling and decided to take a few shots. Was told by staff member to put camera away as I was not allowed to take photos. I looked around, no signs stating this. Swallowed my anger, grabbed the wife and left.
Never returned since.
Dumb thing was in Sydney I did take photos, and then decided to sit down for lunch, then also bought a T-shirt.......and then used the photos to give them a little free promo (http://farrst.blogspot.com/2009/03/deus-ex-machina.html) (had to use phone camera unfortunately).

Dues Auckland missed out, I will go back someday and have another coffee - but will leave soon after. Once burnt twice shy.

On the other side of things - The Mac Motorcycles guys have been most nice to me.
Feel free to pass this on to Dave. All I am asking is that we are allowed to do something that will cost him nothing........and he could possibly benefit from it.

Maybe that's my problem. I'm not that into food and a sandwich in the middle of the day will get me thru. I'm too tight/poor to pay cafe prices for said sandwich and make my own. I'm also too tight/poor to pay someone to allow thier apprentice to work on my bike when I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself. I doubt i'll ever buy another new bike as the value from 2nd hand is unbeatable. I appreciate that everyone is not me and think the economy would be in strife if they were. I won't be going back in a hurry as I feel the place doesn't fit me or vice versa.

p.s I walked in there in motorcycle gear and felt out of place. Made me realise just how far from trendy I was.

If it gets them out of their monster trucks then I'm all for it.

As for the photo thing it is probably because they have a 'gallery' attitude to the shop, taking pictures means they can't sell as many prints, etc.
Not that I agree, it's short sighted in galleries and its short sighted here. Free promo > tiny loss in profit.

Not allowed to take photos? What a serious WANK. You'd think having someone send pics of cool bikes/things to mates etc is free/good advertising. Too cool for skool. NOT.

The only reason I can think of is maybe the owner can't copyright / IP protect the idea... and doesn't want a rip-off / competition starting up?

My views on that is, rather than stop others from doing the same (since word will get out anyway and you cannot always police the taking of photos) - is be the best at what you want to be, so that new competition cannot survive.

I went to Deus last week and thought the menu could do with expanding. They stuffed up my order, but apologised and sorted it out (that's more important) - so all good. The dude behind the bike counter was friendly enough and offered me a ride on any bike that I lked - good service there.

I liked the setup and it felt like a good combination between bike shop, art shop and food shop. Just expand the menu more and have a little more facts displayed about the classic / racing machines and I'd go again when next in AKKAs.

Ive been there once (very recently) and thought it was a cool venue to meet up.
They dont sell the sort of bikes I would buy but I dont care, its nice to have soewhere to go that has a motorcycling atmosphere, sells a cup of coffee and has somewhere to sit and talk shit with like minded people.
Good on the owner for providing it I say, there must be a market for what he produces and what I saw look pretty flash. I saw a fairly well equiped workshop out the back too so they obvoiusly get there hands dirty.

Think of it as a combination cafe, art galery and boutique selling bespoke bikes to people who want them.

I like the place.

Deus is an acquired taste. It's kind of a cool place from a biker point of view, I'm glad it's there. Doug (the owner) is an eccentric oddity. I like what he's done, making motorcycling appealing to a wider audience who sit and soak up the atmosphere. I don't like some of the clientele, when you get wanker hairdressers turning up in their Merc's, you know the neighbourhood is going to hell. But, the last few times I've been there on Scoot, it's been a good experience.

Anything that makes biker's less fringe and more mainstream is advantageous in my view.

For the record, the custom bikes are retro and kind of cool, but you'd have more chance of me swapping sides than spending GSXR money on something that's got 40 horses. But Doug gets out there and races, rides across the Simpson Desert once a year on old Triumphs, and he sponsors good cunts like Shaun Harris. So I can forgive the middle aged yuppie pricks that keep parking their useless SUV's in the biker spaces :)

Yep, thought you might have. Isn't Monday's lunch day?

As for Deus the answer seems simple - coffee in a cafe with no motorbikes on display or coffee at Deus. If I'm in the neighbourhood I'd rather drink an average coffee and enjoy looking at the bikes and workshop than a slightly better coffee and forgo the bikes. I've taken my son and his mates there as well. They enjoy the place. I think Deus is a great place and I kind of think of life with Deus and without Deus. We can certainly use more interesting cafe's.

Anthrax there's a guy who regularly turns up at a Remuera cafe and orders a hot cup of water then produces his own tea bag.

Deus had no problems with us taking pictures.

Went there on Saturday, had a nice strong doubleshot coffee and an amazing french toast. Wife was really impressed, said she didn't know such a cool place existed in Auckland.

After lunch, had a look at their gallery display of Photography by this guy who builds awesome robots.

Saw a Honda 400 customised for $4000 with 25% off it on sale... it's bloody tempting. The done-up Jap bikes are actually very cheap and still look the business.

My 7 year old son is car mad - I like to take him to swanky car shops - most salesmen look at us then shadow us around wiping off finger prints! However the local Porsche dealer gave him a really nice book on the 911! Good man. Now he just needs to start saving his pocket money.

After reading all the posts I'd like a Motorcycle related coffee shop in Christchurch - the logical base I'd think would be Manchester Street or even an extension of say the Triumph dealer - Triumph is now so mainstream in NZ that everyone would feel welcome.

Interesting thread.

I haven't been to the establishment in question – I tend to avoid populace or vehicular agglomerations - but like some others hereabout I'da thunk that anything portraying bikes in a positive light was a plus.

The consensus, nebulous as it may be, indicates that the establishment in question, lacking the comfortable familiarity of a student cafe, may mean the younger ummmmm less experienced among us may not find it all that attractive. That shouldn't surprise anyone, and it probably won't bother the proprietors much, it certainly seems that the temporarily(?) impecunious are not the target market.

But Hey! I'm enough of an oddball to have been saddened when the big K dropped the W650.

A visit to the cafe in question might be a priority the next time I have an absolutely unavoidable Auckland appointment?

Its worth dropping in for a look. They had a stunning Indian on display last time I went through, and I'm by no mean olds enough to remember the era of bikes they aim at.:baby:

I've been a couple of times, and I've gotta say I was fairly impressed. Coffee was good, food was great (scrambelled eggs with smoked salmon on fresh baked bread - f**ken tasty), had a nice atmosphere. Prices were no better or worse than any other cafe in Auckland, which I can live with because no other cafe in Auckland has their own awesome collection of bikes. Also the classic bike and car themed reading material is quite interesting, much more fun than reading the Herald with your coffee. There didn't seem to be much of a biker presence there, but using it as a start or end for a group ride could solve that problem and perhaps put some fear into their regular clientele. :headbang:

I was told they sold a 'John Player Norton' for $50k. I'm old enough to remember these, which were a stock Commando with a crude fairing and rearsets. Someone in my hometown in the UK bought one, so I had a good look at it - nothing special. I think they cost around 100 quid more than the standard at around 900 sterling.

The Deus flat-trackers are a nice job, but they must get the bikes cheap from Japan, and the add on bits from a cheap source. If anyone could find the supplier, probably in China, of the add on bits , such as the nifty flat-track petrol tanks, they would be doing a big favour. There is a Mettisse Triumph in the workshop which shows how it really should be done.

I think we could learn a lot from Doug, he gets about 2500-3000 customers a week which are mostly of the un riding public who are happy to pay for a great experience. It seems from reading this thread that actual motorcyclists would rather go to mcdonalds, so what if the coffee takes a bit longer, it costs a bit more etc check out the bikes clothes etc while you wait.

Lets all go on a ride to the bp wild bean cafe in auckland! we can get cheap coffee and we wont have to wait more then 5 mins then we can have a look at the fridges and quickly leave!

The place works nicely for me. I don't OD on going there, but The Chicken and Pear Salad and an orange juice is just right for a working lunch and it's a good place to do motorcycle business.
Apart from that - it's just a cool place to hang - surrounded by motorcycles and cool stuff.
If you can't appreciate the finer points of it all - they won't miss you. :-P

Chicken and Pear Salad ???? I presume this is a motorcycle shop we're talking about (I'm not a JAFA) ... what kind of bike shops serves Chicken and Pear Salad ???? That says it all ...

Sooo there should be a second bike/cafe... Planted firmly on an amazing riding road and/or next to a track... With a dyno out back of the 'cafe' and by cafe I mean serves anything you can fit on a bbq and anything you would take to the beach in a chilly bin or drink after 6 hours in the twisties...

And for bikes there should be anything as long as it is insane in some way (looks/rarity/speed/tendency to kill owners or flip over backwards).
Yet still with a slightly classy atmosphere similar to DEM.

Myyy idea, now someone please go do it!
