I got some similar ones from Kathmandu (not that cheap though), and they're great - clip straight on the 625.

Bags turned up today.
Bloody good gear.
I wouldn't use them on rides I'm quranteed to fall off 6-90 times, (almost all dirt rides), but they are perfect for kanny.
Cheers Clint.

G'day
Kathmandu have these on special at the moment - about $65, had a quick look today - reckon they would fit on the back of the KLR a treat - no real mods needed

http://www.kathmandu.co.nz/Packs_&_Luggage/Active_Packs/60918/Pannier_Bags.html

Quick question - yours still going strong, how long you had them for and do you reckon I would need any heat shield?
Cheers, Crim

They are the very ones.
I've used 'em on the SXC a coupla rides and they're still going strong.
Didn't need a heat shield as they are sitting on the sidecovers.

Don't the bags push the sidecovers onto the exhaust? I thought that was the problem without having brackets?

Yeah, that was my concern - Having said that I reckon you could bang an internal frame in to the right hand side bag to fix that problem - was going to ask them to take one out and try it but ran out of time - but looks like they will bang right on. Top two tie points under or over the seat and the bottom one on the pillion footpeg. Was thinking that a quick wrap with
http://www.nzperformance.co.nz/store/exhaust-wrap/50mm-wide-x-3-metres-long/prod_53.html
around the exhaust where and if the cover gets pushed against it may be a bit of insurance

Nope, I mounted them a long way forward - clipped to the top of the airbox cover on one side and secured to the passenger peg at the back.

I tried the free CCC panniers - maybe slightly too big:facepalm:

So I invested in some cheap Kathmandu panniers - bit of spare strapping I had in the garage (might invest in some black stuff at some stage), couple of cable ties and voila! Plenty of leg room standing and sitting - pretty sure exhaust won't be a problem - all good :woohoo:

Not really able to take the big off road knocks, but they will let me explore back roads on longer rides.NZ made some time in the past when you couldn't buy such things here, and the frames are off something like a CB125,and I've had them for over 30 years.Just got to paint them black next.

My throwover panniers are the more typical motorcycle ones, longer and shallower than the bicycle ones. They are anchored hard & close to pillion pegs and to stop movement tied back to the rear rack. When stuffed full, they go kinda spherical and I had no issues with them sitting against the un-reinforced sidecovers. However when lightly loaded, the side against the bike bowed inwards, allowing the back and underside to wrap under/behind the sidecover and sit against the exhaust. Melted the strap buckles off them. :crybaby: So much for packing light...

Clint has a simple & effective rack/rail that works well. (which he has published previously if you want more info).

Kanny;s route 7 pannies went for a wee swim/lie down today.
All good, but did take in a bit of water.
Also, a dozen tui fit nicely inside the bag. Win win in my opinion.:sunny:

Tested out my panniers (waited for a hot day) today - she was hot alright down here - went up the North Waimak - dusty as f%Łk - - packed them tight (glad I didn't fall off and need assistance cos they would have looked in my bags and found my wood tools and fire extinguisher, for weight and the kids sleeping bags for bulk) things I learnt;

1. Panniers are fine - heat shouldn't be a problem - don't actually know if I need that much space on the DB1k but will be usefull for overnighting up the Clarence next month:niceone:
2. A splash of petrol not only marks your (new) gps unit it also makes the plastic screws in your safety / sun glasses disintegrate :crybaby:

These are my Pelican lookalikes. Pelicans are reputedly indestructable but also quite spendy. These $99 Kincrome / Craftechs from Bunnings are same size as Pelican 1600s but about $600 per pair less. http://www.kincrome.com.au/web/catalogue/search/product_display.php?partnumber=51019
have proven dust / water / crashproof so far.

Nordie, I got them at Bunnings Porirua about two years ago. I haven't seen them there since, or at any other branches.

V+Crim, yes they are on the killer, I've got pics including the racks I made, but they've been posted before and i can't get the "manage attachments" thing to allow me to repost.

(found one that hasn't been posted before - see if this works)

Pic taken down in the Caitlins en-route to Brass Monkey. Panniers should have been big enough but I tend to take far too much stuff, hence the cricket bag on top

you could contact kincrome NZ at 80A Hunua Road, Papakura, Auckland Tel: 0800 553 236 Fax: 0800 708 677
and ask them about these items: http://www.kincrome.com.au/web/catalogue/search/results.php?category%253DTool%252BBoxes%252B%25252 6%252BStorage%2526sub_category%253DTool%252BCases=

Looking at the aussie prices ($110 for "large", $165 for "extra large") it would appear Bunnings mispriced the cases I bought ($99 each for large size)
Should I go back and 'fess up?

Looks like you got a good deal, even converting to NZD they are still a bit cheaper than other options. Have you got the large or extra large?

pete376403
19th January 2011, 20:51
The ones I've got are "large".
With the benefit of hindsight the extra large might have been better but:
1/ I was looking at Pelican 1600s and the large size are pretty much direct equivalent
2/ Bunnings had these in stock
3/ I carry too much stuff anyway. Bigger bags = more stuff and the KLR is heavy enough as it is.

I confirm these things are strong. The bike has bounced off the ground a few times and the bags are undamaged apart from a few scuffs. The racks (home made) bent, but they are mild steel so just straightened again

pete376403

Asked about these at Bunnings today. They don't have them in stock but can get them - they rang their supplier while I was waiting. RRP for the extra large is $289 or thereabouts and they can get all four sizes.

I was in the states last year, and I bought a couple of SKB 3i-2217-8E Military Spec Cases (http://www.everytoolcase.com/SKB-Cases-3I-2217-8B-SK1614.html): US$120 each.

If you know somebody going over these are a steal!

Pelican cases are real cheap in the US, too. I would have had some sent over but freight is the killer. The NZ importers know this too, and price accordingly.

Surely if you are going riding, having something soft on the sides rather than hard would be the best option? Hard cases do not take the impact as well as soft cases and top roll bags etc. :) Unless of course you want the Pelicans, but for the price you can get a good set of waterproof roll bags and they would take the knocks when you laid it down occasionally.... Or alot, like me...:)
One more thing, at least with roll bage you can really compress them. I carried mine over the Dusty Butt last year, it was covered in dust and shit, when I opened it up, evberything was nicely vacuumed sealed ready for the freezer...lol
Hard cases and Givi's are great, I had one of them too, (DR750s) but I did have to fill it up or everything was rattled around and caps fell off etc.....:shit:
So, you have to have compartments or really tie/secure all and sundry for the REAL rough stuff....
