:gob: I got an email saying that someone had tried to sign in as me and failed 5 times! ??
I tried once tonight and got the message that as I had failed 5 times, I couldn't try again for 15 minutes. Interesting thing is that I hadn't been on the computer trying to log in.

Has this happened to any one else?

No but ask spank for the IP address. IF they are dumb enough they would not have used a proxy and will be on broadband with maybe a fixed IP.

I have the i.p address - it was given in the email....... not that I know what to do with it!

It can be matched to known addresses by the mods. For instance mine is currently 219.89.49.253. If I were to try logging on with your account now, the mods could match the ip address and would be able to tell that it were me.

Go here http://www.whois.net/ and enter his IP address. It will tell you an "abuse@something.com" address - email these people and tell them what you told us.

Change your password to something you don't use anywhere else.

Aunty Maureen signed up at a very nice russian website, that would send free e card greetings to all her pals. All she had to do was tell the russian's her pals email address. And home address. And date of birth.

Of course, the russians asked auntie Mo for her email address as well.

And surprise surprise, the password auntie used for the russian site was "fluffycats". Same as the password for her email. And internet. And facebook page.

Soon, the russians owned autie mo's entire internet persona.

So, if you log onto other web sites, dont use the same password here.

So, if you log onto other web sites, dont use the same password here. It's very important to have at least two passwords in use - one for your critical stuff, and one for your unimportant stuff.

Use a quality password, such as a pronounceable password generator like http://www.generate-password.com/

Sometimes you can just send an email to "abuse@<insert IP address here>" and it will work. Unless it's a severe attack, or someones' site is being used by a cracker/scammer/phisher you generally wont hear back from them.

Oh well, time to move on - the internet is littered with attacks of this sort, I get hundreds and hundreds (sometimes thousands) on my systems overnight, so as long as everything is secured it can all be largely ignored.

If someone wants to they can, doesn't bother me. But I stand by PIN, as in Personal Identification Number.

My eftpos pin number is 1234 anyone else use this number? No, thats too easy. I confuse any potential thieves by changing the last digit to a 5. They'll never guess that one. :innocent:
