Kiwi Rider has a bit on the HP2 this month - lots of talk about it on the web,BMW are giving it to real world riders and letting them race it in real events.Oh man,it looks nice....

Bloody typical - a picture of me on the front cover and all you can talk about is the trail bike......
Nice innit - i'm going to try and scam a ride - i'll keep you posted if/when.

I think this is the most hard edged no compromised thing BMW has done since the supercharged racer in the 30s.They have always been seen as boring,putting rider comfort and luxury before performance...when performance is what a bikes all about isn't it? Still too big for a weakling like me to take off road,but for me it'd make a nice back road blaster.

Yeah, the BMW's interesting alright, but it's still pretty heavy for an 'off-roader' (175kg, innit?), and not the ideal configuration, with them big bazoom thingies poking out the sides. Still, it's nice to see, and it looks like a very interesting ride. :niceone:

no sorry just a big pile of plastic remanufactor the air heads why would you have a serious mx bike with fuel injection only something else to go wrong and probably pay $25.000 when there is no class for it to (race) in and then get flessed by the service agents for a service because you are unable to service it yourself when that was one of the main reason people were buying bmws in the early days as well as reliability.Which they don't seem to have anymore just ask a new r1200gs owner about the rim problems and the problems besides it will be like quite a lot of new bmw owners bikes never get ridden as they were intended. As bmw only seems to be appealing to the guy or gal who has a x5 bmw car in the shed not the traditionalist who brought them for realiability and to ride
and i can say this i own 1 or 2 bmws old and new

well bugger me - I'm saying i like a BMW and you are dissin' it - what's wrong with that!!!!
It looks like it can haul big buggers like me - you know i have to remove one of those ktms from me bum crack when i get off it.

Yeah, that seems to be what other people are saying.
Here's what a friend of mine in the US, who runs a business doing bike tours, has to say. He recently bought a BMW, after years of trouble-free Honda ownership.
"Put 50K miles on a BMW, 50K miles on an HD and 50K miles on a Japanese
bike, and I bet you will see where the true build quality lies!
My 98 VFR had 60K [miles] on it when I sold it and the 01 [VFR] had 47K on it when
sold. I put all those miles on the bikes myself. They both looked
practically brand new when sold. They were the most hassle free bikes
I have ever owned. The motors were running perfect and never burned a
drop of oil. Fit and finish was fantastic. Simply because many people
may not choose to ride their Jap bikes monster miles, nor take care of
them, does not mean the bikes are somehow inferior. ST1100's are known
for monster miles, often over 200K without even getting into the
motor. Many high mileage ST's look new. All I ever did to the VFR's
was add gas, change the oil and clean the air filter, and replace a
LOT of tires! The ONLY issue I had between the two bikes in over 100K
miles of backroad thrashing and touring was a seal on a water pump.
$100 bucks and 45 minutes of my time and it was good as new.
In the year I have owned it, my 02 1150 has required far more repairs
and constant tuning to keep it in good running condition. The fit and
finish is nothing special compared to any other brand. Whatever they
used to coat the valve covers is peeling despite the fact that I keep
the bike relatively clean. Many of the bolts have surface rust on
them, just like many other bikes. If the thing wasn't so much freaking
fun to ride, I would have long since gotten rid of it.
BMW certainly does not have a corner on the market for exceptional
reliability... My final drive blew at 28K miles The tranny is
clunkier than that on Pop's Kubota tractor. The fuel injection system
leaves a LOT to be desired in terms of quality... The stock shocks
barely lasted 15K miles.The headlights are the worst I have seen on
any modern bike. My fuel line quick disconnects leaked and caused the
crankcase breather hose to swell and rupture. I had to replace the
throttle cables because they were sticking so bad I could hardly open
and close the throttle. The oil filler cap just can't seem to maintain
a seal. The left camchain access cover leaks as well. My gear
indicator often shows the wrong gear. The bike likes to pop out of
sixth gear at the worst possible moment even after it has been in gear
for several miles. So I guess as long as I continue to spend a lot of
time working on the bike and tossing large amounts of money at it on
top of the already expensive purchase price, yeah, it will last
forever."
BMW have been going down hill since the /5,when they went from a bike assembled by craftsmen to one put together by migrant workers doing mindless repetitive jobs....the inline 4s and oilheads are just steps along the way in production efficiency and profit....
They have dropped the ball in some basic engineering - like stripping clutch splines...BMW say it's a service item to lube the clutch splines.Like,HELOOOOO cars and trucks have been using dry single plate clutches since the year dot....no one says ''I've got the car booked in for a clutch spline lube today''.Basic man....just basic engineering.

give me my Honda any day! looks to road bike to me with the pipes and muffler like that stupid if you ask me. they won't last long and would cost you heaps if you damaged them.

Well that's some pretty impressive stuff from a road bike then! Take a good look at the photos and see how the exhaust is standing up to the punishment.In that mud race Jimmy Lewis's bike overheated from all the mud on the motor - but the same thing happened to the 4 teams in front of them...water cooled with high radiators.BMW have been taking their flat twins off road from way back,they used to do the ISDT in the 60s - it just seems so wrong that a wide low flat twin can do so well off road,goes against all logic....and embarassing to those they beat.

It is your duty to take one of these on a trail ride. It's the only fair way to test one. Then the guy people are looking at & thinking "what's that idiot doing here on that bloody ginormous boat anchor of a trailbike" won't be me.

Well, the Wehrmacht models in the Western Desert were pretty much off road! With added extra of people trying to blow them up.
If the terrain isn't cluttered (narrow trails between trees, boulders etc) there's no reason why a flat twin should be disadvantaged. And they have the advantage of simplicity .
