View Full Version : Lap timing beacons/transmitters?

Thinking about getting a lap timer. Some on the market suggest that most race tracks have beacons permanently installed so you don't have to but the transmitter accessory- is this the case in NZ? Also has anybody used the GPS ones, they seen to offer a lot more features - do they work well?

These are awesome products and very well made.

Most laptimers you can buy are the IR beacon type and as a result, need to have a transmitter placed at the side of the circuit.
When you go to most any trackday or raceday nowa days there will be someone with one already there, so you don't need to put yours out.
But this can be a pain if they decide to take off!!
The XT product sells the beacon separately.
The AIM Sports product comes with a beacon (www.tyrewarmers.co.nz)
The new GPS products seem pretty good. Apparently XT have/will have one soon, AIM have one and Starlane have one, but these two are in their digital dashboard systems, not their laptimers.
If you want GPS you will need to go for a full dash I think.
Jason Easton aka Gimpy has a Starlane GPS digital dash on his bike (Tigcraft Aprilia), but I think he broke it (?). Seemed to work pretty well.

If all you want is lap times and are CERTAIN you won't want to expand to data logging then buy the AIM system. They are inexpensive and a nice piece.
If you have freinds that have them utilise the multiple beacons on test days by setting up sector timing. Or use two beacons to practise starts.
If you want more from your system than just timing then unsure whatever you get has a real time lap predict function. Immediate feed back telling you if you did better or worse in that corner reaps dividends quickly. With a reference lap loaded from a known (better) rider on your bike it becomes quite graphic out there on the track where you need to lift your game.
THe Race Technology DL-1 GPS data logger is a lot of bang for buck! Esp when connected to a mini dash.

XT racing lap timers can come with what ever you want, the package of receiver and transmitter is available from me for just over $400 inc GST.
XT also have had their GPS based lap timer unit available for nearly two years, yes it also serves as a digital dash and data logger but you get all this for just over $1,000.....
OK shameless self promotion is over...but did I mention...

I have used the gb engine covers and they are an excellent product which work well (crash tested!). I would say the vortex rearsets are a mid range product but have a strange size lightweight bearing in the brake/gearshift which dont hold up in a crash, so they arent easily replaced.

If ya crash properly there wouldnt be any rear sets left on the frame. Just my 2 cents

All common spare parts for the Vortex products are held in stock, as Craig said if ya crash proper then a bearing is the last concern you will have. I have found them to be very good products.
Thanks for the positive comments re the GB racing covers.

That's a pretty good price. GPS ones are nice (I have and GPX) and if you hook up the data logging stuff, then it is really handy to compare laptimes after the event and see why you went quicker in one lap or one corner compared to another. You don't need to replace the dash either.
$1k is quite a bit to lay down though, but it is a very nice bit of kit.

Stick with your sun dial and calendar. I'm not sure the lap timers go in to days and months.

Yeah I bought one and it is a really good piece of kit. The software doesn't have as many options as something like 2D but you pay big big dollars for one of them, and the software is constantly being updated with new features. The GPS is really accurate too, usually within 0.05 of the transponders, and a high percentage is closer.

I was looking into getting a GPS unit and it is amazing how much information you could get from it. I ended up getting the XT from Kevin instead because I thought you are not allowed to use data loggers for most classes...
Thoroughly happy with the XT and he got it to me on short notice so I could attend a test day. Top service

Yep, and for night racing we used the movement of the stars, but that was only accurate to 0.1 sec.
