I don't think it was clear cut. The decision could easily have gone in Italy's favour. We'll take it though!

as i've said, i'm prolly the only italian not so concerned about soccer... and, after all, i'm thinkin about adopting nz as my new country, so i'd be a winner anyway... ;) ;) ;)

the result is way right. your first goal was not regular, but our penalty has been "stolen"... so a draw is the right end.
italy has tried more, but as usual they don't make any result to their actions; you've been more conservative, a lot of defense, but the few actions you've done have ended with beautiful shots...

the difference is that you, starting from your "position" as team, made an astonishing match; we, starting as world champions, have been shaming...
so, much congrats... :niceone: :niceone:

The 1 all draw is a bit un fair.....the all whites deserve 10 bonus points for their sportsmanship behaviour (Helping Italian players up of the ground, and shaking hands with the ref) and for their lack of primadonna hollywood antics....and their total lack of telling the referee how to do his job....and for not combing their hair during the 1/2 time break (Probably)

 right... right...
but you have to understand: being a soccer player here is nothing less than be an hollywood primadonna. soccer player here earn about 5-10 million euros a year, they're kept in consideration for everything, they are asked for opinion for everything, even if declaring war to the u.s.a. or not... :D :D :D
on the other hand, seriously, your players have probably rugby past, and they have to keep their elbows down, at least not to help primadonnas in their acting ;)

23 SHOTS ON GOAL,give the city to Paston, man he played the game of his life, and if we qualify to next round payout is $9mill US,big difference to our coffers, hope the fish heads use it wisely.

Penalty was dodgy, but rules are no holding a player back, seems that is bit like foward pass in rugby, you gets the rub of the green or not.

People say the games lack goals, but nil all can be exciting as 5-0 at times.

The height of our guys certainly helped, but Italy seem to be like the ABs in 1991,too many stayed on after use by date.

Unfortunately we will recieve about $5mill US for starting tournament, another $4mill if we qualify to second round so can't see any govt funding, and really don't need it as much as other sports.Mind you compare that to what the govt has chucked for rugby world cup with stadiums, roading and various infrastructure.

And with the all whites doing so bloody great and being the team of moment the profile of NZ is immense for tourism and people asking where the hell is NZ.

That's exactly it my friend, there is no bigger stage for sporting achievement and, like it or not, even if the ABs win every world cup until the end of days, they could never eclipse the positive exposure for NZ that the All Whites have already achieved.

The world is watching NZ right now, if we make it to the next round you will not believe the media storm that will come knocking at our doorstep and the people that will want a little piece of the little country that lived a dream, this is the stuff of sporting legend, brought to you by a bunch of ordinary blokes doing an extraordinary thing...GO THE FECKING ALL WHITES!!:not:

I stayed up and watched the whole game, but I'll say I almost turned the telly off watching the fucking 'hollywoods' the players pulled. Yes yes I know it's all part of milking the penalty, but my god you fucking pussies. If everyone in sports acted like that we wouldn't need to ever watch movies again. Get a bump to the chest? Fall to the ground clutching said chest grimacing in pain like you've just been kicked by the biggest maddest bull the world has ever seen. Someones foot touches your shin? Fall to the ground clutching said shin grimacing in pain like you've just been kicked by the biggest maddest bull the world has ever seen. You jump in the air challenging for the ball, and another players arm brushes your face? Fall to the ground clutching said face grim.....ah I think you get the idea.

Embarrassing at the best. Imagine the damage a 5yr old with a bad attitude and too much sugar could do to a football team.

Mudfart
21st June 2010, 14:28
yeah the farkin eyeties were shocking with their hollywooding.
unfortunately this reflects on how crappy FIFA (the mafia) rule the sport.
The referee and all ref's obviously have a preconceived idea that NZ are crap, before the game starts.
So, when one of the worlds top teams players falls over claiming foul, he immediately gets it.
Hopefully this world cup is showing the world we are not just hori's running round in grass skirts, and I hear some countries are talking about us quite alot.

It was a really impressive game, made for a great night too, watching the MotoGP followed by the football.
There were moments when it really would not have been unrealistic for the All Whites to score a winning goal. Chris Wood looked monumentally gutted when a strike of his must have missed the goal by no more than a metre in the second half.

Only complaint is, as you all have said, the Hollywood antics of the Italians. Really made me lose a lot of respect for them.

It's hard to take the game seriously especially if you just watch it with the sound off.

Next game will probably be more of a reality check for the home team though, if they can pull off some more of the same with these guy's it will be more convincing.

NZ's biggest problem seems to be Paraguay's midfield defence. As soon as we get the ball we just get pounced on by the midfield. We need Bertos to throw a few more corners I reckon.
Paston must be just about asleep compared to last time too.

Thats called a test match.

The difference is, in a test match you have wickets and runs happening all the time and it's also a good excuse to spend 5 days in the pub. The game last night was like 93 minutes of maiden overs, and the other games were 90 odd minutes where only one or two runs were scored.

Soccer has become iconic because all you need to play a game is a piece of flat ground and something to kick whereas most other sports require a lot more infrastructure, so it's the most played sport. People form tribal identifications with the sides playing, and it becomes much more than a game, so whether it's interesting or exciting is irrelevant because it's a very primal transferrance of the desire to compete that is innate in human beings.

I guess it is just me, but I don't have to have something happening goal/wicket/runs etc every few seconds. I am happy to watch an enthralling (to me) contest. I used to enjoy the old 6-3 test matches where a win was ground out. The new high speed rugby can be fun to watch but isn't as absorbing (for me anyway). Plus I don't understand the rules anymore.

I think the drive for sports as an entertainment package is killing it as a contest. Sure some nil all draws are boring. But some are bloody thrilling. Some will never like football no matter what the score is and that is fine too.

I love both football and test cricket. I don't mind if a game is a draw. Sometimes that is the right result. Although I love the drama of penalty shoot outs too, been in my fair share of those. Sometimes as a keeper and sometimes as a striker. I would much rather be the keeper.

And the all whites have been undedeated in the world cup 2010! that is bloody fantastic!

*cough* australia got raped *cough*

about time NZ showed the world what we got

It's about time New Zealand got to remember that the objective is to "WIN".................yes "WIN"..................damn it "WIN"!

When I was a teenager I was given a trophy for best "looser" at a boxing tournament.....I threw it in the river!

I went there to "WIN" and "FAILED"!

Doing well is nice but the "National" soccer team went there to "WIN"!

We must never lose sight of that "fact", that's what's turning us into a nation of wooses!

Best losers my arse! :oi-grr: celebrating mediocrity.

yeah but considering some people in the world didnt even know we had a soccer team and were shocked when we even qualified to get to the world cup,
and also considering we were pooled with some of the greatest teams in the world, including the previous world champions, i think the boys did bloody fantastic.

unlike the all blacks, or our other teams, they werent previous world champions, or the one of the best teams. they came with nothing and they even ranked above italy. and went home undefeated.
lets not forget what happend to australia too.

that says something, We have a brilliant future in football. mark paston is a legend.

Yes a team that can win.

Alot to that statement Bren, all well in good resulting a draw but to progress in any competition you must result a win.
In saying that, the AW's can return home with the heads held high, no shame what so ever in not progessing further this time round.

All White player of the moment.....that Goal Keeper without doubt.

considering the money spent developing football in NZ compared to the money spent by other countrys we got a great result, Mark Paxton the goalie works for a living, probably the only goalie in the competition who isnt on a multi million dolar contract (the Italian goalie earns 22mill a year) our coach earns 50k the aussie coach earns 1.5mil .....sure they didnt win but they didnt lose either, everyone including most enzlanders didnt give them a chance and were hoping they didnt embarrass nz to much, comparing competitions they did far better than the all blacks at the last world cup ( a major embarrassment) who were expected to win but didnt..fucken good on them

Thank God that's over. I watched the game, and that's probably the last soccer game I'll watch. A hell of an achievement though, especially as the Paraguayans looked like much better players, but 93 minutes to get a nil-all draw?

I'm with you!

Fair enough and it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things. I understand the appeal of test cricket but it doesn't work for me. :D The 20/20 game looks like the future.

All power to the All Whites who played far above their ranking and set alight a country. Respect. :2thumbsup:

But honestly, soccer has a long way to go as a binding spectacle. The proof of that I suggest, is the game highlights which consist purely of kicks at the goal. Nothing else. There are blinding moments of skill elsewhere on the field but no - its only worth re-screening if its at the goal. Compare that with rugby/league/gridiron/baseball/basketball/tennis - all games where excitement can occur at any moment and plenty of it. Soccer is sadly bland by comparison.

Soccer works because of its simplicity. Cool. But IMHO the game needs more scoring so increase the size of the goal and get rid of the off-side rule. Or lets have 14 players.

Global sports money is driven by television and that means increasing pressure for games to fit TV schedules. 90 minutes without quarter breaks doesn't work. In the rugby camp the future may lie with Sevens Tournaments. Huge crowds, fast games, plenty of points. Not my cup of tea but there is a logic there.

I am very proud of the All whites on what they have achieved at this World Cup, but in my opinion and I mean no disrepect to our current squad, we have got the basics covered as far as Paston and the back three of Reid,Nelson and Smith but we need to have more creative midfield players who can hold the ball and pass more confidently and I would keep possibly Smeltz and Wood in the forwards.
I just feel that in spite of our fabulous results from our boys, we should have pushed forward to create more chances in the last 10 minutes of the Paraguay Game as we had nothing to lose but in saying that this Paraguay team did not allow us to play to our strengths so in a nut shell thats football and we will build from this experience for the future.

Plenty of time to include advertising in the 73,072 hours of tv coverage that event had I am guessing.
So maybe 90 minutes without quarter breaks does work.

as do every other sport.

Highlight is the scoring moment or carnage. Doesn't matter what the sport. Football is no different.

Rugby is the tries or penalty kicks or smashed em bro
League is tries or smashed em bro
Basketball is dunks or three pointers or smashed em bro
Motorsport is accidents or insane passes
Cricket is wickets, boundries or fielding mishaps

Football is goals or broken bones (or the academy award winning diving - the part of football I truly hate)

I will watch several of the games of the final 16. There are some pretty good games to come.

All to play for now. Most teams will want to avoid penalties. Especially England mwahahahah

Just a little titbit that may interest yawl. From British news item last night. The sports reporter was playing a pretend game of keepy upy and was complemented on his skills, he was regarded as nearly skilful enough to play for the all whites however the reporter rejected the complement saying he was no where near good enough to play for the legend that is the All whites, high praise indeed.

A little factoid: The all Blacks have never returned from a World cup undefeated, the All whites have...fair play boys.

Hopefully the guys running NZ soccer will invest the monies due wisely. After 1982 the game reached highs but the idiots in charge nearly bankrupted the game, our subs were set so that each player payed $5-10 off hand and that went to the head office. And also didn't matter if you played for school(secondary)teams in morning and club team in arvo, which meant two subs paid to school and club(and 2 lots of money)to head office.

Hope like heck the ticker tape parade doesn't go ahead,as sure they did fantastic, but in no way is a parade justified.

Don't get me wrong - the All Whites played way above any reasonable hopes and deserve parades whatever. But they didn't win anything either (apart from national respect which may evaporate in 6 months). Draws and Nil are a zero sum game. This whole World Cup competition is falling flat because of the lack of goals and excitement.

Oh there is no doubt that soccer is a successful television and arena product. At the moment. But don't be misled by tv audience figures: this is a competition of national teams so even people who don't really care get drawn in to watching because of social pressure, and the natural wish to see your own team do well. TV is dominated by it so you can't escape.

True! It goes way, way back too!

I.E. when Pha Lap was racing and went to America the Aussies boasted how they had prearranged press releases ready for either outcome!

Aussie horse wins and/or New Zealand horse loses! (heads we win, tails you lose)

They wouldn't be Aussie's if they weren't like that and we wouldn't be Kiwi's if didn't act the way we do!

It's who we are.....ANZAC's.....Australasian's.....whatever, I am sure proud to be one!
