Locked myself out today and remembered i'd not put the chain on the back door so I thought maybe i'll try the cat door so I reached my arm through the cat door and was able to turn the door open in the kitchen and I was anle to get in.

Then I found myself thinking are cat doors really safe if I could do that anyone could and get in while I was out

nooooo, just think of it as you having very special arms, the only arms that can reach... they could just kick the door in too :)

Or you could just put the chain on.

Yep we got a chain on our catdoor door.

They're supposed to be lockable. Though that wouldn't do much if someone decided to kick it in anyway.
Stuff the cat, get a dog! A big grumpy one with nice teef.
And board up the cat door. Silly cats.

Sounds like the cat door is poorly positioned relative to the door lock. Perhaps consider a dead lock.

On a side note, I had to get an electronic cat door - had the neighbourhood cats raiding the food supply and I was going through a crazy amount of cat food.

Funny the noise control dude on the telly did exactly the same thing tonight to try to grab some doofus's stereo.

I say good on any thief that takes on a cat flap, shit when we got done they jemmied a ranch slider. There was a cat flap available, but they took the easy route and did the big glass door.

Yes the cat flap should be furtherest from the door lock (ours was) but ultimately it will make no difference, if they want to get in they will

I mean't I locked myself out recently I saw that thing on telly tonight to it reminded me what I had to do to get in it miss worded what I wrote before.I've been having a bit of trouble with mine to cat chased my cat inside the other night should of heard the hissing but the other cat got stuck in the door. I always make sure the doors are locked when I go out during the day and at night time how this happen was went out the kitchen way a left keys on bench usually go out front door way.

Isn't that why they call them "cat burglars"?

Ye that must be why,ha,ha. Seriously get a deadbolt. Although most doors / windows in this country could be forced open with a crowbar. Get an alarm ,help slightly as a deterent. a BIG nasty dog helps too but may eat your cat.

what, and properly lock yourself out? This is a way to get back in silly! Seriously, if they want in, a cat door isn't going to be the determining factor

Positioning of the cat flap compared to access to locks is important to consider. An acquaintance of ours years ago went through a spate of the neighbourhood kids using his to gain access to his house. He was hit a number of times before getting an alarm. (He didn't own a cat, the flap was already there when he moved into the house).

Gremlin is right, if they want in (burglars that is, not the cat) then a cat door won't be a consideration. However it is a handy option for the opportunist theif, especially if it's in a handily concealed door to the house.

I thought it was a given that you don't put in a cat door in a position that you can open a door like that. My cat door is in the ranch slider - not the door that slides - poor little buggar, occassionally runs into it when the door is open - she's even gone out the open door, and then decided to come back in via her door - funny really...... but mostly we make sure it doesn't overlap her door.

perhaps you could invent a new cat door... one that closes (using a guillotine edged slider) when the door handle is turned...

There is no way anyone can reach the door knob through the cat door here, trust me, I had a look at it today. Locked the door on the way out, keys still inside, no windows open, Anne is in Thames two hours away at least.
Lucky for me, I parked the van not that close to the garage door as I normally would, van was unlocked, so I pressed the garage door opener and it gave me just enough room to squeeze under. First attempt was not a happening thing, I started looking for a school kid (maybe chuck em' under) but had another go and made it so crisis solved.

Well I can reach mine but I my cat door is a resnable size and my door handle is one of those staniss steel ones you just have to turn the llittle round thing in the middle.I had to lye right down low on the ground but and strech my arm and turn my hand around to turn the knob don't plan on doing it again but always making sure got my key and go out the front door.

I never knew that but then again most animals sit down as soon as I enter the room or make darn sure they are facing me (and growling).... It must be my after shave...

Same, but the cheeky wee shit can still get in... hooks the door open with it's claw. My stoopid dog just watches it wander past! and wifey won't hear of me locking it closed...

Yea well the thought was well & truly there. I think they work better just sticking the cat door bits either side of a fixed bit of glass,
Quite entertaining i would think
