Yup, after 3 years and 36000 ks my bike got wrecked from under me today.
Had picked up the nz wide tag from Opiki, and was heading up to the Manawatu gorge enroute to Mangatanoka to place the tag at the Tui brewery when a shortsighted asian lady pulled a U turn right in front of me on the highway between Palmerston North and Ashhurst.
I was scrubbing of speed (read fully locked up ) and had managed to point the bike at an escape route which would have taken me behind her had she kept moving, when she decided to see me and stopped dead in her tracks, leaving her people carrier type van square across my lane.
Upshot was, I hit her right on the rear corner of her van, leaving a lovely imprint of the right side of my body in her panelwork. The impact momentarily stopped me allowing my trusty speedy to lie down on her left side, and waiting for me to land on top of her before sliding 20 odd metres down the road and taking all the gravel rash which was meant for me.
Allas, I feel she sacrificed her all for me, for as we finally came to a halt all her life blood drained from her as a huge hole was ripped in the side of the crankcase.
R I P my beloved speedy, I hope they can put you back together, but I fear you may have breathed your last.:weep:

Oh, that's a sad story. Happy to hear you are not a statistic (well, not one of THOSE statistics anyway). Hope that the insurance compnay pays up and you are back on two wheels in a flash. Nice looking bike too! :(

No broken bones or serious lacerations, but I do feel like I've been on the wrong end of a severe beating.
Lots of heavy duty bruising and a well twisted knee, but absolutely no gravel rash.
Strange thing is, because I was out for a 4 hour ride I was wearing my full face, yet not a mark on my lid.

Shame to hear about the trusty steed but glad you are OK. A good bike and your skills undoubtedly helped achieve a less tragic result than might have otherwise been the case. Take care of your bruises and the coffee's still waiting from Saturday.

Well thanks goodness for that, that's all I can say! Mate just take it easy for the next few days, you may not have noticed all of your injuries just yet. Sounds like your head missed the lot of it, and thats a relief. Rest up, and hope you have someone to give you some TLC for a while and take your mind off the state of your bike! :( A real bugga

BUMMER Devo, did the Cops front up? Hopefully the Driver gets what they deserve.
All the best for a full recovery, - cover your butt with getting that knee checked out so its covered by ACC, and doesn't flare up in the future with no record of the accident.....

That last pic of the bike with the T from the Triumph badge dangling is a great picture, it pretty much says it all.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Gutted man (but great escape).
Shoulda smacked-a-ho. Or headbutted her (new lid time).
Come to think of it, I'm sure your helmet hit the ground. And your boots, and jacket, and pants and gloves.
Her insurance better replace it all just in case.

yup, 4 cop cars turned up and an ambulance carted me away to hospital where they held me for two or three hours for x rays and observations.
One of the cops, a Harley rider, popped in for a chat and told me the driver was playing hard to get, cos she claimed she hadnt seen me therefore it wasnt her fault.
Upshot was, instead of getting a ticket for careless with an instant fine, she is now being prosecuted in court for reckless driving causing bodily harm

Now that's good news! Glad to hear you're not too badly hurt. From recent exprience, though, as KatiePie says, it will take a bit of time for all the effects to come out, so don't be too hasty to get the body doing everything it was.

22nd June 2010, 12:24
Thats actually bloody annoying innit? A driver pulled out through the left hand lane (where a kindly soul had let her through) and started into my right hand lane yesterday on the way home from work. I spotted her early, but was moving quite quickly, I started emergency braking and ajdusting direction to go around the back of her (assuming she carried on pulling out quickly the way she was doing). Instead, she spots me and slams anchors on. Now I find myself emergency braking directly towards her.
I managed to stop in time before her, and upright (just), but if I had hit her, I would have been out of my lane crossing into the left lane. If she had not seen me though, she would have done big damage to me if she T-boned me.
What to do?

good to hear you are reasonably ok.
did the cops breath-test her, drug test, and make sure if her eyesight really is ok?
i reckon anytime someone has an accident, these tests should all be done.

Sorry to here that - at least you are OK ... something similar happened to me about 10 years ago ... car pulled out, then realized and hit the brakes .. if they'd booted it instead I would have been fine ... My BMW Paris Dakar made a mess of the car ...
But what was that about the bike saving you from gravel rash ? A mate of mine dropped a Triumph 650 back in the 70s .. and wrapped himself around the tank to save the paint work ... (yeah .. we all thought that was a bit OTT ...)

Obviously they are not very familiar with NZ laws. Somehow they think that admitting that they failed to look and see approaching dangers before causing injury is a defence.
Glad to hear you walked away with such minor injuries. I would not like to have been in your situation.

Good to hear your ok man, i got smacked by an asian driver ages ago too, blody prick couldnt even speak english enough to work out what he had done which pissed me off more than the actual crash.
Also as much as it sucks your bike got wrecked dents and lost paint is a shitload better than gravel rash and busted bones in my opinion

Mate, firstly, I am glad to hear you are okay but very sad to hear about the crash and the damage to your beloved bike. I met you that one time in Pauatahanui and really admired your bike.
Good to see the boys in blue doing the business and giving her the serve. I wonder how she would see things if she had a large truck pull out in front of her and try to use the same excuse. Reckless driving causing injury huh? Nice.
.... we used to call it "DWA". All the best for recovery, repair/replacement and getting back out there doing the tags.

RIP old yella. sad to hear that hope you get a good one and think of all the fun test riding replacements.
Glad you are well...and comiserations at your loss....we do get attached to our bikes don't we!
35 years of road riding...3 accidents and 3 near misses....two off the accidents and all the near misses were almost the same as your case, a driver turns right accross my path....that has to be one of the more common causes of accidents.....when will driver (and riders) Learn to check the way is clear before turning left every time....and be attentive....and signal a left turn in good time which I assume did not happen in your case our you would still be on "Big Yeller"

Good to hear that something tangible has been done - let's hope that she actually stays off the road now that she's lost her license. If she follows the NZ mentality of crappy drivers she;ll just ignore it and carry on driving anyway.... (sorry, that was more a reflection on dumbshit recidivist idiot drivers in NZ who seem to think that continuing to drive while legally lacking their license is ok).

Yes, i had to smile at the $1201 - wow, that $1 on the end, I wonder what that will pay for? hahaha. But it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, as my mum says.

Just caught up with your travails Devo, pity about your old yellow love but the new bike looks real nice, see you've remained loyal to the big T. Did the extra gear, the tool kit, saddle bag racks and sissy bar come with it or did you take it off your old bike or have to fork out extra.
Hope that you'll have many more kilometres of safe riding on this beauty.
