View Full Version : 5.1 sub placement?

I've finally treated myself to a 5.1 Home Theater package (I know, I know, I'm so behind the times with 7.1).

My question is, what's the optimal placement of the Sub? Does it actually make a difference?

Placement will definitely make a difference. If you have a fairly standard shaped lounge I'd start with trying one of the corners. It will depend a lot on the type of sub but if it is ported (has a hole) you'll want to play around with how far from the wall is optimal. Don't squish it right up against a wall anyway.

It is ported, it's an open plan kitchen/living room. I'll draw a diagram.

Dont worry too much about the 7.1 - 2/10's of fuck all comes out supporting it at the moment.

(Says me who wasted my $$$ on the two additional speakers - D'oh)

My system was set up by a the audiophile shop assistant & he placed the sub a few feet away from the telly but would have preferred to have it closer. apparently they are not directional but that was his preference. Having said that, the closer you are to floor the better the bass, sounds great in the garage under the house. I have thought of lifting it off the floor. A mate has a bose system & the sub is hidden behind the couch. You can hear the bass great but have no idea where it came from. I suggest a little trial & error once you have figured out the sweet spot.

Buy a bigger house with a dedicated room. Saves you putting in the dotted line.

Personally I'd locate it in the left corner behind the couch and just play around with how close to the back wall until you get it sounding right.

I've got a Bose system, they recommended behind the TV, then I had some gizmo that made noises to each speaker and I had to sit in various areas of the room. This set the whole thing up according to my room shape. Fuck knows how that happens!

RTFM..

I just bought a new one - it's got a microphone you put in the "primary viewing position" and it programs all the speakers individually.

BUT what it dosnt do is tell you the ideal location for your speakers (or as OP ask - specifically the sub). It will configure the outputs to the speakers as best as it can (length of cable, distance from speakers etc), but you still get a lot of additional benefit from properly located speakers.

Woohoo baby. This thing is loud.

Now I gotta get an optical cable to have 5.1 PS3 carnage.

With a similar set up, I ended up parking the sub to the left of the TV cabinet.

Mine did. I would have thought a lot of them would have said in the manual where to locate the speakers.

Hence my RTFM

There are a lot of sub placement guides on the internet - search them up and try them out. For me it ended up being a compromise between best sound, free space and cable length.

I'm still haven't sorted out my 7.1. Bought speaker 6 & 7 about 6 months ago and they are still sitting in the box. Still need to invest in a 7.1 receiver but since 99% of the media I watch is still 5.1 or less (either MySkyHD or downloaded 720p 5.1 rips) I'm not in any hurry.

For ultra low frequencies your sub almost needs to be in the next room. When my system is up and running, you can hear the sub better from the street than in the lounge.

mikeey01 is the expert on here, ask him.

for ultra ultra low frequncies bolt a mass speaker (thats probly not the proper name) to the inside of your couch!

A good trick with the sub is to place it in your typical seating position (on the floor), then walk around the room to see where it sounds best. That is where the sub should go.

If you set your cut off frequency to high, the bass will be directional... i set my crossover at 30 for fronts and sub
