Afternoon all.

I am looking to purchase a TL1000r again and was hoping I could find someone who knows someone.

There was a beautiful 2001 spec model on TradeMe recently. It was in Hastings, Hawkes Bay as listed but you could test ride it in Auckland.

It was yellow/black, had Yoshi end-cans and the bike was pictured in a garage. The price listed was for 8k.

I didn't think to log in and put it on my watchlist because i was dumb I guess. I finally get the money approved today so I log on to TradeMe and there it is... GONE. I cannot find any reference to it either on google or TradeMe and that makes me a sad panda. If anyone knows of anyone that was selling it please get in touch.

The other option of course is that I am still looking for a TL1000R in good nick, pref 2001 as a year with aftermarket parts onboard. I have about 7000-8000 to spend if the bike is in a decent condition. I live in Auckland but am prepared to do some driving if the right bike is waiting there.

Thanks for reading.

Ian

Can't help you find a TLR, but this is one of the funniest things I've read in a while. I'm not sure why, but "Sad Panda" strikes me as hilarious

I will keep you updated on how I get on. The more I look at it the more I want it :)

There is no mention of reserve or buy it now.. simply an asking price. I hope thats not the starting price. It looks like it should be going for at least another 2k when compared to the others on there. Ah well. Shall find out soon enough I guess.

Hey Rusty,

Yeah its online at motorcycle trader and have looked at that one as well. I think that the one I am looking at seems in better shape and for only $50 more.

I spoke with the guy and I am heading over to him on Saturday for a look and ride.

My only concern right now is that WOF expires today and he said that he probably wont be renewing it. It was my understanding that selling any second hand vehicle unless otherwise and implicitly stated must have at least 30days of WOF remaining.

Would you buy a bike with no WOF? Like I said, it looks in great shape but still. Would you be offended if someone sais.. I will buy it but you need to WOF if first?

Fun fun.

As far as I know, motorcycles (like any other road-going vehicle in New Zealand) need to have a warrant of fitness good for at least one month from the date of sale, unless specifically sold 'as is'. It used to be that this was standard but these days no one really seems to take any notice of that, I bet it is still the legal standing though. I think it is totally fair of you to ask them to get a warrant for the bike, and I also reckon that since the bike has gone through at least one auction 'cycle' on trademe without selling (and it's winter) you probably have the leverage to ask for that. I would be suspicious of someone who emphatically refused to get a warrant. You could at least ask to see the last warrant sheet when you go to look at the bike as it often states upcoming work that will need to be done before the next warrant is due.

As always, don't over-estimate what the warrant covers. It is really a very bare minimum safety standard and everyone knows a place where you can go for an 'easy' warrant (well, everyone I know does). You need to make sure you are checking the important stuff yourself, or getting a friend or dealer to.

I did once. Bike seemed to have a few 'small' issues. Decided to take it to my WoF guy who failed it on a multitude of things which I had never even thought of before. Keep in mind that a WoF merely makes sure the bike is roadworthy during time of inspection. Usually WoFs don't count for shit anyway. I've passed a wof despite having told the inspector I feel pulsing in the front end. It's not the be all end all.

If you're mechanically good, a lengthy (15 min +) test ride will tell you everything you need to know. Do: Slow speed, fast speed, light braking, hard braking, hard acceleration, all that shit. Look for things like back brake not working well. Often on front-heavy sport bikes (ala all of them) the rear brake is ignored up until the point the pistons seize up. If you're not mechanically minded, make some mechanically minded friends.

I've also had a scenario where I was selling a bike and an out of town buyer wanted it inspected by a stealership. So I complied, took the bike into the shop. The guy literally glanced at the bike for about 30 seconds, and said "All done". Probably charged the buyer $70 for the 'pre sale inspection' too.

DON'T TRUST ANYONE regarding the condition of a bike. Especially dealership. Unless you have a friend you can trust.

Alrighty,

Minor update on the TL. I went out to see it on Saturday and it was dirty. Nothing too bad just standard road use dirt on the wheels and chain guard and standard fairing splashes. Now then, if I knew that in one week a guy was coming round to have a look and potentially drop 8 grand in your lap, I would at the very least run a damp cloth over it.

Plus, and this is the major flaw, both end cans have wacking great dents in em like someone has given each one a kick. As you are plenty aware, the end cans finish off the bikes look and I am just not happy about them both having dents. According to the owner, the reason for the low price is because of the dented tins but in the pictures on trademe they are not dented and there is no mention of them at all. He reckons they were smacked when he left the bike in a mall car park to go do some shopping. The crash bungs are not scuffed, the wing mirrors and levers are fine so it does not look like its been dropped so maybe someone did give them a smack.

Also, no rego and no WOF.

I am taking it out for a ride on Saturday before making a final decision. I have the cash now so can conceivably own it this weekend. Just not sure. This is all screaming walk away because I know that everytime I look at the dented tins I will be disappointed.

balls.

Mate dented cans would be the least of my concerns as would some dirt.Would be more bothered with how it runs, how bad the suspension is if OEM still, swingarm bearings, head bearings, chain and sprockets etc.You can pick up a set of cans for sfa.
