Just a quick question, do people here find motorcycling a reasonable amount of exercise, by itself.

Yep  Putting on the five layers of cloths then the gloves and helmet just leaves me worn out. :devil2:

Just a quick question, do people here find motorcycling a reasonable amount of excercise, by itself.I wouldn't equate motorcycling with exercising for fitness, as in running, cycling, gymwork, etc. A longish ride will *exhaust you* but that depends on the riding position & style, amount of time spent on the bike in one sitting, and fitness level of the rider. That pic in the other thread of the really obese guy on the ZX-12 for example, he would probably be absolutely shattered after a 3-5 hour ride! :bye:

Definatly not road riding, off road you need to be as fit as possible....I have a problem with that at the moment...

When I decided to ride bikes on our local dirt track,I put on my custom made leather trou, and found I had to do the belt up tight to stop the button popping, after a couple of months on the dirt track I had to take the belt in another notch so my pants didn't fall down.I was riding off road at the time, but it was definatly the dirt track riding that took the weight off - going around in an oval sitting on the seat was not as much hard work as bouncing around off road and hauling bikes out of gullies, but I guess I must of been burning a lot of energy.

Takes much more than that to keep oneself fit and healthy...

Motorcycling is Exercise???? No Way!!!!!!!
Motorcycling just doesn't compare to running, swimming or playing physical sports like rugby or touch.
I guess it depends on your definition of exercise.
I usually go for a ride on a Sunday, because thats R&R for me and coz I'm usually sore after saturdays footy game, so it's nice to not get physical and just go for a hoon somewhere.
For me, exercise is getting the heartrate right up for a good 40-60 minutes.
but then again, I don't consider walking as exercise either and most people do.

 No way. I don't reckon it works enuf muscle groups by far.
I go to the gym about 3/4 times a week. When I first started going I it was obvious how unfit I was.

Road riding--yep sometimes definitely -After a ride with one or two nameless KBers On say 22 or The tukas yep Im wringing wet with sweat and feel Ive had a good workout.
A days racing is definitely exhausting -some races more physicaly exhausting than others.
A cruise with some freinds --nope that isnt work at all
Best comparison I think would be a competition cyclyist going for an afternoon bike ride with his kids.

That sweating would more likely be due to fear

Actually I reckon riding can give you a bit of a quad workout...if you're going at a very brisk pace and like to put lots of weight on the outside peg on entry to a corner and while hanging off. After a full day of that, I have noticed myself with very sore muscles. I'm not a fat, unfit lemon either, so stop thinking that. I think it just depends on your style of riding.

Motocross/offroad yes. Roadriding - No.

Depends on the kind of bike. Big heavy ones take a bit of strength to lean around corners and such. Not to mention getting it off the kickstand.

A complete excersise? No, you still need to get yourself to the gym.

Motocross is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world - but to be able to do it the riders have a full on fittness program to keep at that level.

Interesting replies, I agree in general road riding is not much exercise. When I was dirt bike riding, THAT WAS ONE HELL of a workout. I found I had to get fit to enjoy riding. But here is a question what about the fact that hard road riding would lift the heart rate, plus give the upper body a reasonable workout. The other item, wouldnt riding in all the gear in the middle of summer cause the average person to drop some weight due to the amount of energy/sweating etc.
That last one isnt exercise but just a thought.

nope not fear -just an unfit old begger on a bike that probably needed to looose a few pounds.
Actually its the weirdest thing. At the time in a dangerous situation I don't feel fear. Not being egotistical i just don't --Now afterwards thats a different story--I collapse in a gibbering heap sucking my thumb asking for my teddy.

I agree about the off-road I get very tired after a race and end up sleeping most of the way home.

Probably cuz you fill up with adrenaline then when it shuts off so do you, i used to get the same playing rugby.

part of sweating would be wearing hot gear, not really exercise i dont think, i dunno tho

My thighs get real sore a day or so after going on a big road ride. I'd guess it's from shifting my weight around so much. But I'm not very fit at all.
I'm in the process (still...) of trying to get into cycling a bit to increase my fitness.

yeah but its like it takes me 17 minutes (timed myself today) to walk about 1/2km on a slight gradual slope (HILL) and I have to do this walk twice a day and build up longer distances.... this could flaming well kill me all this walking...lol.

Yep give me another 5 weeks mate.. and I will be back...

Riding my cruiser requires a fair deal of work on anything but the straights!

The only way road riding could be considered exercise is picking your bike up after a bin.
There must be some fit buggers in here.
