View Full Version : Biker down Wellington Motorway 02/07/2010
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/3880849/Fatal-Wellington-crash-amid-heavy-commuter-traffic
One person was killed in a multi-vehicle motorway pile up on the northbound lanes near Wellington's Interislander ferry terminal tonight.
Police Inspector Ken Climo said the accident, just before 6.30pm, near the Aotea motorway on-ramp caused major traffic holdups.
The victim, a motorcyclist, was a 58-year-old man.
A string of less serious accidents at Plimmerton, Pukerua Bay and Wainuiomata about the same time snarled commuter traffic.
Mr Climo guessed the accidents might be linked to the start of the school holidays with people anxious to get away. Although traffic was heavy driving conditions were good.
RIP dude.

Damn, poor guy. I am going to keep good distance between myself and any other vehicles on the motorway considering the number of accidents I have been seeing lately. There are bits of car and damaged barriers all along SH1 at the moment. Saw the aftermath of another major crash just a couple of days ago. Many police, a fire engine, and what used to be a car scattered across the the Thorndon off ramp.

My condolences go to his friends, loved ones and family. Shocked to hear of this news today.
Yes traffic last eveing was very heavy, with people doing silly things. There was solid convoy as I came back over the Riumtaka about 5.30p into the Hutt, going North.
Safe riding everyone, one poor family are now having to come to terms with what has happened to this chap. My heart is heavy on this one.

At that time of the day chances are pretty good he was filtering between lanes. :(

I dont think we should speculate on things like that at this stage.
Our thoughts go out to this riders family and friends.
Us welly riders now have an uneasy wait untill his name is released to see if is someone we know.

Your right, sorry, it was just a thought out loud. Didn't mean to be insensitive.

It sounds like there was a very nasty string of accidents.
A small amount more information here: http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/local/3881710/Motorcyclist-dies-in-motorway-pileup

Likely. Northbound just before off ramp to motorway (opposite Ferry Terminal exit) it's more likely to be cars trying to jump the queue not seeing the motorcyclist. Traffic is stalled there and you filter down past the cars.

Anyway, we are speculating. It's a reminder to us all to watch it out there.

Yeah I thought that too.
That is what you know , if he was filtering he be just knock of his bike probably by car that never indicate or check they mirrors , but this being fatal and he is 58, chances are more that he was siting in between" multi car pile up "and he was in sandwich between cars. You are way safer filtering then siting between cars !!!
Ether way another biker is gone because of fucken cages
RIP.

I rode home from work that night about 5-10 minutes before the event, on the same bit of motorway. Very sobering.

How do you know that?

It's timely to remind people of this site's policy on "Biker Down" threads. Ghoulish commentary and speculation as to the cause of accidents of this type are unnecessary and disrespectful.

My mate and I went past minutes after the incident. Ambulance and police were there. Sinking feeling as I approached. I commute around this time using mostly the motorway everyday. My thoughts are with you and your family.

There was a second biker down in Wellington yesterday too- poor chap died in hospital. A thread has been started for that one two. Not sure how to post the link on here... but 2 in 2 days - very sobering indeed.

When I moved to NZ, Wayne found me my first IT contract gig and was my agent for nearly 5 years after that. He went out of his way to help me with NZ Immigration then and in general, nothing was too much trouble. He'd stop in and buy me a coffee when he was up here for business and we'd have a yarn and a chuckle. He was a gentleman and the only agent I dealt with in about 12 years of contracting (UK and NZ) that I genuinely liked. I truly find this very sad news.
RIP Wayne. My sincere condolences to his family and friends, who have lost a good man.
