This is the new bike:

I think bikes on the LAMS list are restricted in their BHP to something like 33hp.

What are the differences between the FZ6 and the XJ6? Look like the same bike to me.. I guess there must be some spec changes there somewhere.

THey're restricted to 54HP. The most powerful LAMS bike used to be the Yamaha SZR660 at 48HP, but they've revised the list and the Ducati 600SS is now included at 54HP. THere's a very large market in Aussie and competition is fierce. The Suzulki GS500F was the king of that for a long time, and the one by one, the other manufacturers added restricted models for LAMS approval. That also includes the Kawaski ER6N and ER6F. I've attached the latest list for you to check out. I believe that the difference between the FZ6 series and the new XJ6 series is cosmetic. They're Yamaha's response the the Suzuki GSF650S and GSX650F. Of course, Honda has the CBF600S.

I think their pretty simple to DIY de-restrict.

It's not that the cops know any difference. What's important is the rego shows LAMS. If you're on a bike that isn't LAMS approved and on your Ls or Ps it's a massive fine and demerit points. The "restriction" is longer slides in carbs, or a differnet ROM chip for injected bikes. I think the whole thing was started by Hyosung back in '05 when they bought out the LAMS versions of the GT650(R) to go up against the Suzuki GS500F and the Kawasaki KLE500.

Yeah the Hyosung 650 LAMS bike has different carb slides in it. It's an easy task to swap them out for OTS Suzuki slides.

It's also a credit to the hyo engine that it responds so well to a carb change - 79hp unrestricted is not too shabby - not really a learner-bike candidate.

Anyone ridden one of these bikes? If so, what were they like? Is there a diff between the xj6 and this? If I remember correctly, the XJ6 is a bit more sedate?

The FZ6R LAMS approved bike in OZ is restricted in the throttle, easy to derestrict buy a new throttle bracket for where the cables attach to the fuel injectors this then gives you full throttle & 60% more power than the LAMS approved model.
This bike is nice to ride, goes thru corners nicely, breaks well but needs to be ridden at full throttle everywhere - not like the Rossi R1 I took home on monday

Aussie also has the XJ6SL as a learner approved bike and now have the R150 a single cylinder fuel injected motor - will let you know what its like when we get our demo bike, supposed to be capable of cruising at 120kmh & return 45km/ltr

So since its a 600 (not 559 right?) does that mean it will have the higher ACC levies?

The levy brackets are:
250 - 600cc
601cc +
