There's nothing else to do, the skids got busted big time last night in Kaipoi, and the skids are up to fuckall tonight anyway so I'm just chatting to some nice 16 year old girilies online and going hard on the whisky.

Sounds like the whinge of a dull person.
Kids with no imagination often are heard to say "There's nothing to do". Meanwhile, their mates with imagination go out and have fun playing football, climbing trees, doing the stuff they should be doing.
Poor widdle anti-social teenage misfits, the big bad Popos busted their skids. Diddums.
So there.

I'm not a teenager anymore, so what, you're encouraging me to go out and cause trouble?

It's a beautiful day. Go ride your bike up Evans Pass, turn left and ride to Godley Head. Enjoy the view.
Don't forget to get an ice cream at the top of Evans, the view from the Mr Whippy van is awesome too.
Sorry it's not illegal or anti social, but not everything that's fun has to piss the rest of the population off.
Learn to enjoy the simple things.
Just a thought.

I never ride up the hills in winter. The roads are wet and with the gravel, it's too dangerous. But you're right about the view, it's awesome!
And you're right, not all fun things to have to be at some one elses expense.

?? really?? you just have to ride to the condtions. the biggest reason I ride fuck all in winter is i dislike being cold quite intensely. I did take the scrambler out for a wee spin yesterday though: went up to the top of Worsleys (wanted to look at some property up there) and then up to the Kiwi. road was fine: damp and shingly, but its not like its a racetrack, right?

I stick to the straight roads in winter. I don't really find riding that much fun unless I'm thrashing the fuck out of the bike, leaning it over on extreme angles, or seeing if I can break the land speed record on a long straight. Nothing makes me feel more alive.

Yeah, I'm just taking the piss. I'm scared of gravel after having a few too many close calls, I just don't want to drop my bike.

I've done a track day before, but I don't have enough money to do track days, or to buy a dirt bike. It's hard enough to save up for a new oil filter!

It must be a generational thing - wanting to be a crazy skidder/scratcher without any skills.
The road is never a constant the therein lies the pleasure. Knowing when to pull and when to push.

In summer I do push my bike pretty hard up "the hills", because I can reasonably assume that the road conditions will be dry, and free of gravel. Unfortunately, the roads up the hills around Christchurch never really dry out over winter, and with the grit that is on the roads, I have to ride with extreme caution.

Thats right. Common sense dictate you do so. However uncertain road conditions exist in summer, autumn and spring. You're missing out a lot of riding because of fear

Fear... or, lack of confidence?
Oh, and last time I looked a new Oil Filter was cheaper than a bottle of whisky... and they last a lot longer.

Lack of confidence most likely. As for the whisky, I don't buy it, I distill it myself.

Okay,
may I suggest you read a few books, and put some of the words into practice. You will enjoy motorcycling much more if you are relaxed.
As for the distilled whisky, that may well relax you, but I don't condone consuming before riding.... Well, not without a long sleep in between.

I definately need to do some track days, and get more confidence especially with heavy braking. I enjoy getting really pissed and riding dirt bikes, but not on a public road.

There are many other biker down threads on this site. I did not mention the name of the victim, the victims family, or the location of the accident. I don't see what the problem is.
