Nasty
5th July 2010, 08:18
Hi guys

A friend of a friend went out on his dirt bike yesterday and has not come home.

It is not known apart from somewhere in the Hutt - where he has gone. His level of experience is not high.

If anyone knows tracks etc that he may have gone to please contact me and I will feed through to the SAR team who are already involved.

So many uncertainties - if you bumped into a guy names Phil (welsh accident) green kwaka - yesterday while out riding CALL ME URGENTLY 021 404098.

Cheers

Unfortunatly Nasty there are not to many Wellingtonions that post on here and I think most ride up Paraparam way?

Most of the riding from what I hear is out of Wgtn the except for the fire breaks on the Hutt Hills?? But the guys from Welly will be able to tell you more I've been away for 15 years now?

I will shoot into off road and see if I can get some names for you to PM so you can suss out some possible areas to look and add them to this post!

OK Off roads guys help a little here please!!

Edit: Ok most of the welly guys posting in this thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/112762-Lookin-for-Wellington-tree-riders

Hopefully he hasn't gone to the firebreaks as I'd think they'd be pretty tricky if the weather is anything like it is in Dorkland??
Nasty the welly guys haven't posted for a little while but as a mod you might have some emails and/or contact numbers to make some inquiries?
I'd suggest Secondfild, Pornstar or kezzafish they seem to get about a bit? OH and flangmaster!

Hope this helps a little.

I called Nasty to say we rode Odlins Rd yesterday & we didn't see Phil there. When I speared off the track & into a big cutty grass bush the next rider didn't see me & kept going -so much for riding in groups! It is more probable he went into Karapoti/Akatarawa and they were putting up a helicopter. Fingers crossed they find him and he got lost/ran out of fuel/breakdown rather than had an accident.

Jeezus!- this is the kind of thing that I dread! - Im constantly asked by people - 'where can I go riding around here?" and I always say- Take two mates with you-minimum of three- just in case summat happens!

My thoughts are with you and his folks- I wish I was down there to get out and look myself.

That's no good. I've ridden up the Karapoti by myself on numerous occasions. I don't think I'll be doing it anymore. Unfortunately I don't have a bike at the moment so I'm unable to go up and have a look. Hopefully some of the other Welly guys can arrange to have a scout around.

Hope he turns up safe and sound.

I went up the Firebreaks yesterday arvo, only saw three other guys up there in a group, none on a KLX400R. I came back from Blue Mountains at about 3pm.
Very likely that he could be in Karapoti, its easy to get horribly lost if you ride for long enough, and also quite a few drops off sides that are tempting. Give me a buzz if any helpers on bikes are needed (would mind the excuse to get off work).

Yea if i can get off early ill go have a look.... unfortunately we didn't go all the way over to Karapoti yesterday just played around Mungatuks (Pram).... there wasnt many riders out yesterday cause of the event up in Foxton.

At least if you got hurt, when they stopped to have a drink and wait for you, after you didn't turn up, you'd only be a short distance away and they'd know where to look. We always wait for the slower guys they are usually the ones pushing past their level to keep up anyway or they wait for me I should say LOL!!!

oh I just wondered what sort of van or ute does he have?? We never look for each other out on the trails, its to hard, we usually meet at base which is the carpark and our vehicles. The starting point for the search probably should be to find that, but SAR would know that.

Look just an idea, post up his car and trailer or van/ute details the welly boys might have more chance of having seen that when they have started or finished their ride???

So from the report http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/local/3884458/Concern-for-missing-Hutt-motorcyclist

Its a KLX 400R isnt that a road/off road bike so my guess is that he might not of had a car/van/ute...

Subject: Search underway near Upper Hutt for overdue motorcyclist [NZ Police News]

Hi,

A new news release is available for you to view on the Police website:

Title: Search underway near Upper Hutt for overdue motorcyclist

An extensive Police search is underway in the Akatarawa Forest Park area for a missing Lower Hutt man, who failed to return home from a motorbike ride yesterday afternoon.

Wellington Police District Operations Manager Inspector Mike Wright says Police were alerted about 7-30pm last night, after the 35 year-old failed to return home at the expected time.

“Police Search and Rescue staff have been out searching overnight and we have now ramped up the search. We’re being assisted by Greater Wellington Regional Council parks staff and Upper Hutt Community Rescue members.”

“We’re focusing on a large area in and around the Akatarawa Forest Park area. A helicopter has done an overhead search earlier this morning, however we haven’t been able to locate this man.”

Inspector Wright says there were a number of keen trampers, trailbike riders and four wheel drive enthusiasts in the area yesterday, given the fine weather and someone may have seen this man on their journey.

“He’s described as a Caucasian of average height and solid build, dressed in black clothing, riding a green Kawasaki KLX 400R motorbike, similar to the one below. We’re urging anyone who may have seen him to contact Police immediately on either (04) 381 2000 or on the free phone Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.”

ENDS

For media queries please contact Wellington Police District Communications Manager Victoria Evans on 0274 373 020.

Yes but most of us with lights have road kits that are never fitted. 90% are transported to our rides excect for the dual sport guys.
The stuff article didn't say he left on it, It said "left to ride" but I might be splitting hairs there. You could be right though, still worth finding out I reckon.

I hope we hear we've got a very sheepish rider who got lost soon :)
When I used to ride off road on my own, I'd leave notes to say which direction I'd gone in, and even which trails I was heading up. The trails thing didn't work as I'd easily get side-tracked, but at least the guys knew which direction to start looking for me if anything had happened. They used to think it was me being paranoid, but it was this sort of situation I never wanted to be in, and that was in a smaller area than what we're talking here.
Thank you to those heading out to help look, and those already looking. Big hugs to the family and friends sitting anxiously by the phone.

I live up the Akatarawas myself, and passed a number of "off road" bikes on my way home froma ride last night. Wish I had payed more attention now, as I don't recall any of the details about them except each rider was on their own.

All the best with a positive outcome from the search. And anyone heading out themselves on their bikes to assist, just take it easy yourselves.

I would suggest a personal emergency locator beacon.

They are only good if you can see the sky ( As goes via satellite to America then they notifiy us here in NZ ), bad part about Karapoti most of the track covered in thick trees... i use to work in the centre dealing with EPIRB's .... (Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon)... however i do agree they are better then nothing and increase your chances of being found by like 80% - 90%.... the other good thing is most Helicopters ( Well the Wgtn Westpac ) has DF gear (Direction Finding) to locate the EPIRB when they are searching so they can get with in meters of the signal... they are not cheap though about $400 but whats the price on a life...

After coming back from looking for him last night i was easly reminded about how cold you get if you crossed the river and was thinking the worse if he was going to be out a second night cause it was soooooo cold... i couldn't feel my fingers on the way back to use the clutch (Clutchless gear changes :( ... but all and all a good result... im out those ways most weekends so i dont think anyone should ride alone... more then happy for who ever to tag along when im out.... just PM me..

Yes I've been carrying one on my adventures for a couple of years now, one with a GPS locator so your position can be narrowed down to less than 5 metres (the ones with out GPS are only good for narrowing your position to within 5km). Cost about $800.00 with a 5 year battery life but is used for a variety of activity's in the bush and on the water so well worth the investment if it saves time and money if a search is needed as well as saving a life. Those two trampers that died last year down that way were less than 200m from a hut and would have been found quicker if they had been using a PLB with GPS.
As far as working under tree cover goes I also have a GPS receiver and the warning is that it may not work well under tree cover yet even inside my back pack under trees and with cloud cover it keeps receiving a signal most of the time. At least my track logs never have any gaps in them. If satellites are directly overhead, and there are a lot of them up there you can see them criss crossing the sky at night, I think the chances of the PLB getting a signal out under trees is pretty high.

Great news that the guy was found safely.

On a slightly cheaper option has anyone thought of carrying a smoke flare? Very small but could come in very handy if lost. I read somewhere on here or stuff that the lost rider heard the helicopter overhead at some stage.
