Why do I buy from a dealer? (or for those who don't want to read a long post – Boyds Rock :Punk:)

Here is why.

I recently traded my bike on a new (second hand) one from Boyd's in Hamilton.
They clearly spelled out the warranty. Outside the warranty period the bike developed an oil leak.
I phoned them up and asked if we could come to some arrangement that wouldn't leave me too much out of pocket. I was told to ring back.

I did, and was told to drop the bike off and it would be sorted.

On Saturday I dropped the bike in, and while waiting to be picked up, started looking at boots for my daughter. Started trying some on, my daughter didn't like them. Troy came past and said his niece liked a certain type and he would get some (he was looking after someone else at this point as well). A couple of minutes later, he had some, they were the right size and may daughter loved them. Swipe goes the card and off we go.

Popped in this morning to pick up my bike, spoke to Troy about some boots for me. He cut me a good deal on some run out Diadora Muds and a pair of Dririder Rally cross pants.
Swipe/swipe goes the card and off I go.

I was going to buy some boots online, same with the pants.

But Boyds looked after me when there was an issue. They didn't have to. But they did, and subsequently got my business on accessories. I will also keep going back. I know you can get things cheaper on the net, and shopping round. But for me, I like to know that the guys that are here in my home town have my business. If something (price wise) is well out of whack, I will give them the chance to get close. If something isn't right, they are right there to sort it.

The DR is my first bike from Boyds. I can pretty much guarantee it won't be the last.

Thanks Greg, Glen, Troy and the rest of the Team at Boyds. Thanks to the workshop guys who did the work on the DR.

I am already lining up the next couple of purchases from Boyds.

Sure, you may pay more than a private sale (for the bike), but I reckon in the long run, it is well worth the extra.
(plus they gave me a good trade in price too and the whole deal was easily done on a rainy Saturday morning)

Warranty service on bike out of warranty – 0
Boots for daughter – 150
Boots for dad – 250
Pants for dad – 100

Service from your local dealer – priceless

Thanks Boyds! :scooter:

They are my favourite store and shopping there means I never have to go thru auckland. Nicer ride from my house to hamilton too. They are like Motomail used to be when motomail actually stocked a comprehensive range in the Phil Scott days. Now Motomail is a waste of time unless you only want riding gear.

I reckon Hamilton Honda have done me well, I feel they looked after me when I bought a bike that needed a ton of work
(of course if I had bought a bike from a shop in the first place I would't have needed to then spend money on it :weep:)

I cannot compare tho as I'v never set foot in Boyd's, maybe I should go have a look.

Agree, and I've been to all of them :). But as Mike said Hamilton Honda do run close.

Wysper, the next time you pop in, ask them if they still remember a crazy lady dropping off a cake and the beginning of the year for some things they sorted out? ;) I'd be impressed if they do, but that's how good they've been for us...they got cake.

I had the same experience with Hamilton Honda. Walked around for ten minutes then spied someone way down the back chatting to a friend. Stood next to them waiting and looking expectantly for ages and they totally ignored me so I left. Was only looking to spend $400 on gear, but it went to Boyd's instead who have been helpful and given me a good price on everything I have bought.

I like all the bike shops in Hamilton.
But yes, Boyds lead the customer service/product knowledge/all round aproachabilty race by a mile.
Ham Honda does have a poor customer relation approach. Hope they improve.

I have been to Hamilton Honda 3 times since they opened their doors & ALL 3 times I was ignored not even given the time of day untill I was getting on me bike to leave ( hang around for @ 20mins nothing ) Boyds workshop & accessories staff on the other hand maintain exceptional levels of service which is hard to beat... " You want proof ? " If you can handle the proof go there on a Saturday morning ( or anytime of the week to be fair ) & hang around for a hour, its like a supermarket & yet, you go to any of the other bike shops in close proximity to them & you wont find as many customers in their store compared to Boyds. The only part I can't shed any light on is the Sales team ( Apologies Greg & Glen if you are reading this ) as I have never brought a bike from there before but I'm sure their level of commitment to you the customer would be out of this world also, having said that, a couple times I have asked pollitely for a loan bike whilst scooter was in the workshop & without hesitation Greg or Glen have provided me with something from the ever AWESOME 250cc cruiser to a GET THE F*&%K OUT OF MY WAY DRZ400 SM, with both coming off the showroom floor which, in my eyes is outstanding. So to end my thesis on Boyds reputation, all the other bike shops have a lot to learn on customer awareness, satisfaction without compromising customer service, " Heres to the TEAM at BOYDS " :first: :2thumbsup

Brought my first bike from Boyds a few weeks ago, no reason for taking so long but have never been a fan of Hondas or Suzukis, got a nice R1 now of course.
Prior to that I recieved nothing short of fucking brilliant service from the service department, Lyndon is a very knowledgeable mechanic and I trusted him with my race bikes and the result was trouble free racing.
Awesome spot friendly.
Definately the second best place in Hams for gear to ;-)

To me this is the obvious proof. There are constantly people coming and going in Boyds compared to all the other bikeshops. I've spent 15-30 mins is some and no one else has come in. Boyd's, I've never been in there for more than 5 mins before someone else walks in the doors. You can't put that down purely to location or shop design either. Or the types of bikes they sell. Not everyone that walks through their door is buying a bike.

I don't know why more businesses have a look at the "competitors" and try to understand where they are doing better. Then do that. Simple equation really.

I thought all bike shops did this? Ham MC washed mine when I took it in which was bloody good because I couldn't, for the life of me, get the chain grease of my rear wheel. A tried all types of potions and nothing worked. They got it spotless. Should ask them what they used.

Thta could go for Colemans in Auckland, I mean do you have to wheel the bike outa the store to get service. In fairness tho the accessory department is pretty good. It could also apply to the Yamaha store in Penrose. I went it there wandered around the shop, and didnt even see a soul. I should have wheeled a new R1 outa the dooe and see what kind of reaction I get.
Am thinking of going to the Tron today for a ride. Might just call into boyds and see how good they are.

I bought my SV from them - they were pretty good at the time. But then, they were desperate to sell off the last one they had two weeks before quitting the franchise - which could explain things i suppose. Course when I first went in there the original salesman suggested, when I said i was interested in a bike, that I buy a scooter! Bastard! A scooter? What the fuck would I do with a fucking scooter? He changed a bit when I said "I wouldn't be seen fucking DEAD on a scooter mate!"

The younger guy who eventually sealed the deal for me was a pretty good guy though. I still go in to see him every time I am around there.

hmmm, funny what you say about honda, as i always found them to be great.
I borrowed a CRF250X from them for a weekend a few times i think, and they have been great to deal with.
Both sidewinder and I had our GSXR's worked on there, and i never had any complaints.
I know a lot of the boyds staff quite well, so i get good service there too.

The worst shop in hams has always been waikato yamaha, and it is funny how many people agree with me.
Their sales team was arse to deal with, i brought one bike from there, and they made buying a second one so difficult and painful that i got a GSXR 1000 instead.
it is nothing personal, but if you want to compete, you have to beat the other guys on something!

True dat.
Probably one of the most approachable accessory blokes in the country.
He has the wholesalers wrapped around his lil finger due to the amount of stock he moves.
If there is a more friendly and savy acc guy around, I've yet to meet him/her.

Somebody in the workshop is a little optimistic with the old tyre pressures (during servicing) though - wondered why the back was a little lively on Sunday. Checked the pressure - rear tyre was 47.5psi...front was OK....bit surprised by that. Still, even I could fix it...

Funny old world, innit? I went in to Hamilton Honda on Friday for a WOF. No appointment, and never been to them before. The service was exemplary, they gave me a bloody nice cup of coffee, offered me a bike to take away (not needed) and stored my gear away safely whilst I went to work. Based on that, I'd definitley go back.

ive delt with them before, i wanted to buy a brand new kx 250 and they just fobbed me off, i dont know if it was because i was young or something, but they lost a $10,000+ sale just because no one took me seriously. on another occasion i went in looking for a gasket for a clutch cover for my old '91 KDX 250 they couldnt source one for me and basicly told me to get lost. i went across the road to boyds and asked john about the gasket, 30mins and a few phone calls later he had the gasket on its way for me, ive delt with boyds ever since.

They are a small store and there isn't really much to say about them. Because there is never any one in there you do normally get a hello which is a bit better than others.

Sales guy isn't the best. Parts girl is pretty hopeless. Head mechanic can come across really arrogant sometimes. Other mechanics seem all good.

Don't go there looking to get parts. They ring one person they don't bother looking for good deals.

I haven't brought anything from them, but I have visited the place.

The staff couldn't have been friendlier!

They even asked the Dold's rep to bring around an Arai helmet that I specifically said to them I wouldn't be buying, but it was 'No problem'

Ended up spending about an hour and a half there just checking things out, drinking their coffee and having a chat.

I'll go back there again...I might even buy something this time!

Re Hamilton m'cycles.
Heath, (the salesman owner) lets his products do the saling for him, (Ducati/Triumph/BMW/Kawa) have good names and the riders of these brands usually have done their homework.
In saying that, he always answers whatever Q's people have, but has a more laid back approach to sales.
Kat in spares isn't going for the bulk market, they mainly focus on set brands like Arai, BMW clothing etc. (remember, they market themselves as "the big bike shop").
Mike, (w/shop manager) can come across a bit brash, until you get to know him. Lots of requests, demands are put on w/shop managers, (this I know well), so forgive him if he isn't always the perfect diplomat.
Matt and the other boys are excellent. Very knowledgeable across the brands.
The place is always tidy and full of lovely new bikes. Call in and drool.

I used to own a F650GS Beemer that I bought from Hamilton Motorcycles. It was a good second hand one with about 14k on the clock. I had owned it for roughly a year when I took it for a wof at Hamilton Motorcycles. It failed cos the headset bearings were knackered so I got a new set of aftermarket bearings cos the beemer ones were gold plated apparently. I had Frau beemer in a million bits in the shed and had cause to phone Heath on an unrelated matter(Fork seals I think) and when he found out was goin on with my bike he says he will phone me back in 5. True to his word he phones me back....Put that bike of yours on a trailer with all the bits and bring it up here he says....I have to say at this point that my bike was well out of warranty but he had it reassembled by the guys in the workshop with the genuine beemer bearings wof'ed and ready to ride home the next day and all he charged me was an hour and half's worth of labour. Now things may have changed up there over the years but I will definatly go back if ever I'm in the market for another beemer. Exceptional :Punk:

Before reading this thread i was a little "meh" towards boyds.
been in there once, no-one even raised an eyebrow to my or my g/f. in saying that we were there for 10 mins and other people were in the shop.

After reading this thread we decided to go back and actually talk to someone.
met a really nice guy in there, explained we were starting out and looking for gear.

we expected a bit of a "why am i wasting my time talking to you" attitude (imagine how a salesman would talk to a 15 year old on his learners at the holden dealership)
but instead he was genuinely helpfull and took the time to fully explain different types of gear, pros/cons ect.

his no bull sales approach has easily got him $1000 out of a couple of students when the time comes to buying.
so much so that we thought of going to have a look at another store in hamilton but decided not to because we already feel like we have a sence of loyalty to the place.

Agree give them a couple of visits,if you're ignored go elsewhere (went into a large retail shop for an interview, stood by desk waiting- ignored, stood looking in several areas with staff- ignored, then the bloody storeman asked if I needed help, yep after manager please, was asked to follow him.Manager was dude behind lady at desk when I stopped first, politely told him,he needs a kick for staff acknowledgment of customers.Said this is my payment terms, what I could offer and said don't want to work in a shop where basic staff - customer service skills are lacking,he rang back giving me job, went into see him, guess what ignored so said not interested).

Joys of buying more gear lol,my wife was typical woman,"not getting on that thing"so I bought my gear, then she decides to try the pillion thing, she liked so over time more gear bought.Have a great relationship with a shop so usually give them the coin, unless trademe has the buys, but last year we grabbed 2 jackets, both had faults after 1month(4 rides) other took longer but both replaced no cost or hassle.

Road and Sport : The parts dept is pretty good, i know a few of the boys, but if you dont like harleys, your better off trying to pick up guys at a hot rod meet.

Hamilton Honda : I have brought 3 bikes from these guys, they have been the most outgoing lot by a mile, when doing a bit of journo work, they were the ones who got my foot in the door, and even though I measured every bike with a yardstick (even theirs) they just accepted it. Pete has been more than generous with me.
they have hit the ground running, even in the middle of a recession.

Waikato Yamaha : I have only had disappointing service from these guys, for some reason they seem to be difficult to deal with in most aspects, I prefer to outsource to another yamaha dealer when in need of parts.
I tend to be treated like a tire kicker when in there, hence honda and boyds getting mine and my friends business.

Hamilton Motorcycle Centre : I found these guys to be pretty good as of late, I always felt a bit underclass as a kid in there, workshop were always good guys though, and they always were more than fair when working with them.

Boyd Motorcyles : I have enjoyed a good relationship with boyds, and know most of the staff well, like honda, I never pay sticker price, and consequently, I would have sent over 45k there over the years on bikes and gear, and will continue to.

Interesting reading here. Im not sure I have met you Carver?
Waikato Yamaha have had some staff changes in the last 12 or so months, with the departure of Dave and Jason.

I have read the comments on here and they offer some excellent points for us to improve on.
I like to think all feedback, bad or good is great! Its always good to know where we can inprove.

Thanks for the comments Tri Boy, I had suspected our profile was too low in Hamilton. I have some thing coming in the pipe line which should raise awareness of our brand and encourage some new business.

To give you all a sniff of what is to come, think, a slight change to opening hours, and discounts for prompt payment eg cash.

More to come soon. Thanks James

Good on ya mate. I get pissed off with businesses that get all defensive at bad feedback or ignore it. Using the bad feedback will get more customers in the end (and more $$).

No I do not think we have met recently, as I have not been into your shop in quite a while.
I will be interested to see what you guys come up with, I may pop in for some bits in the future.

Oddly, although I live in Wellington I'll add my 2c

I've bought quite a bit off Boyd's - my boots, 2 pairs of gloves, fox helmet and all on seperate occasions.
They were awesome for price, service and delivery! Being that I'm not in Hamilton, they had to courier me my new gears and delivery was always fast.

After the first purchase of my Fox boots, when I needed more stuff, I just popped them an email and they got back to me fairly quickly with what they had in stock, prices and pictures and charged my card and had them on courier the same day!

They were better service, than ANY of the bike stores here in Wellington - including Lower Hutt.
I've walked in, ready to spend and wandered around for half an hour being ignored.
One trip I went to buy my partner some specific $600 moto boots. Wandered 20 minutes withouth even being greeted, then when I pointedly ASKED for some help, was pointed vaguely in the right direction and basically expected to find them myself - and they wonder why I ended up buying from out of town and will never go back :eek5:

Hell deal on my bike from Boyds. I'm not sure that there was much in it at the time for them to be fair. GB in the Mt were a bunch of cocks despite advertising they would match any advertised deal they renegged on a deal advertisied in Motorcycle Trader. They had the bike and the colour but couldn't walk their talk when it was put to them. I had another option left - Boyds and they did the deal without a worry. Probably discounted the Oggys and other little bits after the deal was done by 0% but I didn't give a shizz... Greg was a great bloke to deal with at the time and has been ever since. Don't get down from there that often but every time treated like I'm in there weekly and they have a better selection of accessories than any of the AK dealers - with the trip down from the Bombays. And the ride out over the Ragga deviation on the loan bikes while the gasaxe is being serviced is always worth the wee day trip. Go Boyds - you undertsand what a customer centric business is all about - highly recommended
