have been looking at new bikes for a while now and myself and a few others I know have all run into simlar probs findin what we want, has to meet the following
-don;t want a hyper missile 70hp would be heaps , enough so its still ok with her indoors on the back
-must look cool
-racer type riding position ( I like uncomfortable bikes)
-japanese reliabilty( no ducatis )
-sportsbike brakes and suspension
-must be relatively new , undert 15000ks ,no 15 yr old 400s with a million ks and 10 owners
sv 650 came close but bland looks and crap brakes and suspension
the nsr I have is awsome but no good 2 up and a bit unrelaible and thirsty to tour

Sounds like my next bike - well the criteria atleast.
Is the SV650 really so bad?? I've never riden one.......
Is it possible to repair/make up for the deficiencies.......
How much would it cost to repair??
Cos I was thinking of an SV650 in 10 months -- but seem to keep picking a ZXR400 as my next bike -- the fact that the ZXR will be half as expensive as an SV is another thing == agree the SV looks bland
You need the full fairing - then it looks much better.

One of the BRONZ instructors owns a 2002 SV650 - older shape - he has a standard bike and says that he has no problems keeping up with riders on any roads......
But I've read about the suspension and brakes issue before - Zapf who owned a late 2004 model said that apart from the susp and brks the bike was also rather top heavy - is that the case??
Details please -

I just want to see what you KB'ers feel will be a:
-70hp would be heaps ,

-japanese reliabilty( no ducatis )
-sportsbike brakes and suspension
-must be relatively new , undert 15000ks ,no 15 yr old 400s with a million ks and 10 owners
sv 650 came close but bland looks and crap brakes and suspension
Now one option would be to fill the SV forks with heavier oil - I've heard that the shocks(rear) are fine.... and how expensive will a brake upgrade be??
The next option is finding a decent zxr400....
.... can't be bothered with a little CBR400 ........ and can't be bothered working on a VFR for maintenance.

YEAH BUT ITS A SHIT 1 LITRE THE 01 BLADE IS SLOWER THAN AN 01 GSXR750.
IF YOU WANT A FUCKEN REAL HOT UP GRADE FROM A ZZR250 GET A GSXR750 T OR V MODEL THATS 96 AND 97 . CHEAP FAST GOOD HANDLING EASY TO MAINTAIN AND CAN USE OLD RACE RUBBER AND ITS MORE BIKE THAN 99% OF THE POPULATION ARE RIDERS. THE V IS SLIGHTLY BETTER CAUSE THE LUBRICATION IS UPGRADED

98 AND 99 BLADES WERE STRUGLING TO KEEP UP WITH 98 AND 99 GSXR600. I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE SADLY I BOUGHT ONE OF THE FIRST 98 BLADES IN THE COUNTRY THE ONLY GOOD BLADE WAS THE FIRST ONE BUT EVEN THEN A ZX10 WOULD EAT IT IN A STRAIGHT LINE AND CATCH IN THE CORNERS WITH A RIDER WHO COULD BULLY THE BIKE

movies running late......
uhhmmm...... 70hp or less.
I want to be able to go up step by step not just upgrade to what Death is currently riding cos I ain't yet as good as Death.
I'm pretty sure in 10 months I will be able to thrash the shit out of my ZZR250...so want a decent step up -- a 120+hp 750 will be a bit of a too big step up from a 38hp twin........ don't you think??
That's why I was thinking ZXR400.
I'll be mostly doing weekend riding - Scenic drive type roads and as many trackdays as I can afford.

96 AND 97 750 WERE CARBURATED AND HAVE A SOFTISH POWER DELIVERY , DONT THINK OF YOUR BIKE WITH 120 HP THINK OF IT AS 120HP MATCHED TO A GOOD CHASIS , DONT BE A PUSSY THE RIGHT HAND CONTROLS THE POWER

good for 80-100000 km before rings
bembo brakes
oolins shocks
OK, what sort of money did you have in mind? How about a RVF400? Or a CBR600RR, yeah bit more than 70hp, but 2 up, 100hp is handy, you dont need to use all of it, but nice when going up hill, 2 up and want to pull out and pass. Or take two plug leads off your GSXR1000?

How bout the TRX 850 as RON SOAK suggested??
80hp - but 80+nm ??
Seems to have decent reviews - http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mccolin/trx.html and it costs around 6-8k sticker price at dealerships. And if you don't look too hard people might think it's a ducati.

There is only a few bikes that fit that catagory... superstock 400 or a SV650...
You can get late model ZXR400's (i have a 98, they stopped making them in 99 i think) or a RVF400 which is only 10 years and younger.. Problem with these bikes is on the open road they arent that great for two up riding, by yourself you dont really need anymore HP than that...
SV650 is much better, huge amounts of torque which is great for 2 up riding... easily fixed suspension, fork oil and WP rear shock (to keep the cost down) or you can whack on a GSX-R front end (pick one up from the US for about $800-$1000)
Personally i would go for the SV650 for your onroad riding style that you talk about...

Dude I own/race an03 (02 model) SV650. What I'd suggest is buy a SV second hand. Buy a gsxr600 rear shock and then take the bike to Hawera Motorcycles and get the suspension sorted.
Total additional cost will be $600.00
Brakes wize---holey shit matey Im running a racetech front and at the end of the back straight at pukie it regularly flies the back wheel so definitely no lack of brakes.
I'm running SBS pads atm
I did notice the brakes seemed to get better and better the more the suspension improved.
One other thing Ive done--keep in mind its for racing-I removed all the padding from the seat -it lowers the Gof G and made it easier to move around on the bike. You dont want to go to that extereme but the seat is ablout 6 inches thick.

We all know you really want a Ducati !.
These are on my "second bike" list short list and have good pillion seats to share two up.
New Triumph ST , Ok high powered but getting rave reviews .
Honda VFR800 , The old sport tourer benchmark bike
BMW F650 GS ,For the odd bit of light off road , has enough power, and can carry pently of luggage.
BMW 1100s For some strange reason I like the styling.
japanese reliabilty( no ducatis )
-sportsbike brakes and suspension
.
.
No point me putting in my 0.02 then eh!!
.
.
Seriously though, I wouldn't discount the SV650.
And like RON SOAK says, the TRX850 is a very underrated bike, well worth a squizz.
Have a nosey at BikeMart or Motorcycle Trader and News, to give yourself some ideas (or bikepoint.co.nz - it's 2005 Lynda, get with the programme!!)

To me this looks like "a good honest bike" that I may seriously think of owning as my 3rd bike.
