Suzuki AZ50 trouble

Hi i've brought a 2007 AZ50 second hand about 2 months ago, it had only done 1900km and wasn't blowning any smoke, but the battery was a bit flat since it wasn't being used much. It has being running great, starting first pop and would always accelerate well after being cold.

But lately ive had a few issues with it

Firstly sometimes when I would accelerate away from cold, and it would get stuck at (around) 40km/h and make a weird engine noise, as if it had hit the rev limiter or something. It would do this for a second then continue to accelerate to 50km/h, or I would have to back off the throttle a bit then it would accelerater away. It will only do this once and always from cold, then the engine will run fine.

Secondly i would sometimes have trouble starting it from the electric start, therefore i took the spark plug out and had a look at it, it wasn't too bad. I put it back in but the bike wouldn't accelerate very well and was bad at starting, so i brought a new one. With the new spark plug it started fine a couple of times but ended up worse that the old plug. Today it didn't want to start on the kickstart and I had to hold the electric start for about 5 second and use a bit of throttle to get it going. This causing a bit of white smoke from the exhaust.

I gave the bike a long run over a week ago, and even though i had little bit of trouble starting, it run great, no conplaints. EXCEPT when i got home it died on me, but started again fine. It did this a couple of times when i first got it but that was probably because the battery was a bit flat.

This is related to the auto-choke, right? From time to time, when I pulll away in the early morning on a cold engine, the first twist of the throttle gives me a bogged down response, no power essentially, but it corrects itself right away when I get offf the throttle. Why it would happen at 40km/h is pretty strange.

Have you tuned the carb yet? My scoot would die at every stop light untill I raised the idle just a little bit.

I run my scooter daily and I still have the random instance where it takes some coaxing to start, cranking it over longer, giving it some gas, etc. I dont see that as too out of the ordinary for a cheap chinese scooter.

Yeah i've started to believe it is the auto choke aswell, since it's only bogged down from cold. My dad had a chat to a work mate who used to be a bike mechanic and he said to have a look at the carb which has a tick over adjust screw which adjusts the idel speed. Havn't adjusted it yet but like yours mine idles too slow. Still needs a few cranks and a bit of throttle to start it, but i might try a hotter plug and see if that helps.

But i've been using it more now since i'm back at uni and it's been running a lot better. Appreciate your response.

(For anyone who has a az50 a good website is http://www.let-s.ru, it's all in russian but if you download google toolbar it has a translator which can translate it pretty well into english. But if anyone has a workshop manual for a az50 let me know.)

Check your air filter is clean, and maybe the carb needs a clean.
The carbs are set in a factory in a different country to its probably worth getting a scooter shop to give it a tweak, just moving the needle up or down one notch can make a huge difference on such a small engine.

If the engine is sorted with a tune up and it still bogs at 40k your variator needs servicing, probably just cleaning all the black shyt out and new weights.

Most scooter service shops will turn the scoot around inside a day for under $170 + or- including parts, plus they will probably do things you wouldn't bother with at home eg lube cables, levers, stand pivot points, adjust brakes and the change final drive oil.
The first service should have been at 500kms then another at 1000ks then every 5-6000k so its worth getting it done in case it missed one of the first two.

Finally decided to take it into the shop as it got worse. Took it into Sportzone Suzuki and they said it was the resrtictor in the gearbox. They removed that and tuned the carb a bit and it is now a completely different bike. Accelerates well and does 60+km/h. And it only costed $40.

Has now voided the warranty though, still - it sounds like you got a better scoot out the other end. Amazing what removing a small washer will do...:scooter:
