View Full Version : It's new bike time!

Over the last couple of weeks i have sold my RM250 dirt bike and my YZ400 VMX bike.
The YZ just wasnt getting used enough and the vintage mx scene around the waikato is pretty quiet and i was having to travel too far for a ride.
So i was looking at the ADV bike and thinking do i upgrade ???? :scooter:
The DRZ does everything i need it to do,although a little more power would be nice
but that would be very detrimental to the demerit points.:innocent:
As i tend to ride the dirt bike more than the ADV bike the DRZ is safe for now.
So a new dirt bike it is then but what ?????????
Another 2 stroke, a 300 perhaps. Might be getting a bit old for a 2 smoker now.
Like the lecy leg to for when i get tired, so that would mean a KTM 2 stroke.
There's enough of you guys riding KTM's at the moment and ( wait for the fallout ) they have never really done it for me.
Enduro bikes are quite heavy ( and its easier to buy a lighter bike than having to lose weight myself ) but MX bikes as a rule dont have lecky start.
Not sure i am ready for an EFI dirt bike yet, have no problem understanding them but that means i would have to take it to a dealer for repairs.
I am far to miserable for that.
So watch this space, cause i am dying to get dirty on something.:devil2:

Mate, this is funny, cos I have been watching you ride the DR for a couple of years now and am impressed by the way they can haul your ample motocross bod around...:)
I myself have taken a plunge, but want a trail bike and the DR400 looks more than capable as you have shown.....
I won't hijack the thread but suffice to say, the 625SXC is lighweight Enduro racer and wickedly fast.....In the right hands...(not me till I get usd to it) will keep up with Anthrax and co...BUT, I prefer to have two wheels on the deck the majority of times unless it is horizontal most of the time....

I had a go on a TM300EN. Fookin wicked, but the importer is a cocksucker with poor part/technical support.

sounds good mark.. watch with interest....
but be aware,,,ive been looking at a possable new set of wheels, and came home tonight to find a new dishwasher in the kitchen....WTF...........
JMJ
You should really try and get a ride on a YZ250F. Sure it's got no lecky start but they start really easily anyway and are easier to ride fast for the entire ride than a 2 stroke for us old unfit guys. Just ask Cary how well they perform with one of larger stature aboard them. Then there's always the new KTM 350.

That's funny Joe:)......Well, at least you can compromise....Ain't it fun, married bliss. It is good to know you can reach an agreement..:)Wheels or a dishwasher.....Hey, you can put the old one in your panniers and bring it down to MMMMM...:)

seems to me that you'd be bored on anything other than a 250-300 2 stroke or 450f
a 250/300 wouldn't be different enough to your old rm so that leaves a 450+f
a 530exc would be nice but you don't like orange
have you looked at the 570 roostabergs? or does the efi rule them out?

That would be a great bike! Hands down...! Off road it would be a handful. Hate to be behind him..:)
Like the te570.....wasted off road, gotta have the blinkers and road legal status, then can be used both on and off....

Watching with interest. I's bin thinking about getting something smaller & lighter than the 640... but it's a tough ask from an adventure bike. For pure off-road a 250F would be the go, but they are too close to my 200 2t - I would like something that races in a different class. 450F or bigger wouldn't be so good off-road (better than a trailie like the 640) but as NZKTM says it will do better on the tar seal. Anything orange will yield synergies with the 200 in parts & knowledge, so that's an advantage for me.
Or do I register the 200 for local adv & trail, and get a soft-roader for commuting and traveling??
The 640 can do everything from road touring to XC. That's a hard act to follow. Improving any one aspect likely will kill another, eg an enduro would be better at XC but I wouldn't ride it to AKL on SH1; a soft-roader would be better touring but I wouldn't take it on a XC.

Mark, a friend has recently purchased a new EXC400 which he is very pleased with. He says the EXC is lighter to throw around than his CR450X - which is for sale, well maintained.
Colin, that's why I got a WR250R but I'm never riding it to Auckland :spanking:
warewolf
14th July 2010, 14:13
Yeah I like the idea of the WR250R... out of my price range at the moment.
EXC400 is supposed to be a sweeter ride than the 450. Would probably haul my carcass as readily as a bigger bloke on a 450, too.

Looking at it, everything seemed odd/unique... forks, shock, ancillaries. Been hanging 'round KTMs/'Bergs for too long now  Japs tend to use generic stuff, KTM uses lots of similar stuff across the range. This looks... exotic, a bit like Gas Gas.

Yep 250 four stroke, not enough urge for me. Riding mate has 2010 YZ250.
Nice bike but not enough grunt on steep uphills for my size.
Quite like the Bergs ( not ruling anything with EFI out ) not so keen on the 16k price tag.

I was at the Tawawera ride last week and guy I was with had a test ride on the 350, said it was fn awsome and he's gonna get one. he is a fast 450 enduro rider.
Me, i'd go for the 300exc as the MX is not my thing anymore.
If i felt the need for some MX a 250F is what i'd get, handle's my weight no prob and a shit load of fun to ride. I'd say you would be at least as fast on that as your RM. (re post above, just need to get used to one and carry a lil more speed instead of relying on the grunt, you'll ride longer than on a 450)
Spoilt for choice you lucky bugger

Yep, heaps of bergs on trademe. Don't ride one unless you mean to own one, as they are pretty hard to resist once you have.
Mine is an 05, and I am never going to ride one of the EFI ones. For gods sake, I may not be able to give it back. I am told (by other owners) this is normally how it starts. So just don't ride one.
Easy:)

My suggestion, a 690r with a set of black plastics (to avoid the orangeitis issue), but then of course any ride you go on we will see you at the start and that will be it. :chase:
Look forward to seeing your purchase, I predict it will be something fast.

A Big departure for me, its the first non jappa ive ever owned.
When i looked at the standard equipment list though it just all made sense.
Tomaseli fat bars
Magura throttle and hydraulic clutch
brembo brakes
alloy bash plate
plastic frame gaurds
excell rims, pirelli tyres
supersprox sprockets and o ring chain
6 speed gearbox and electric start
and all at a price that was cheaper than the jap bikes :shit:
Even had enough $ left over to buy a neck brace so now i can only maim myself, not kill myself.

Worked till 9.30 last night fitting barkbusters, hour meter and scuff gaurding the plastics. Then at 7.00 am this morning it was off to taupo for one of the epic adventures trail rides along with 600 :shit: odd other crazies.
Man what a killer engine this thing has, it torques like a Massey Fergusson - punches like Mike Tyson and keeps on pulling and pulling like a 15 year old school boy.:gob:
Speaking of Mike Tyson, the body feels like i have just done 10 rounds with him.
Time to get the mountain bike out and get fit again.
Still running it in so havent found its full potental yet and im hoping that the forks will soften up a litte with more use ( other wise they will be off to Moto SR for a revalve ) but other than that - truly impressed.
