So very sad to see the images on TV of him laying in the street.
Apparently the 23rd policedog to be killed in the line of duty.
I would have shot the bastard who did that !!

Very sad indeed and unnecessary, but a reality.
Unfortunately their role (land sharks) is to prevent and protect. While no handler wants to loss his partner Gage died doing what he was trained to do.
Very sad
RIP - Gage

Yes poor dog - Not a chance in that situation.
His handler will really feel the loss - it's an incredible bond and trust thet they form on the job.
I would like to work towards being a Police dog trainer one day - they are pretty exceptional dogs, and so important in the police force.
RIP little fella

Just leave the wanker in a cell with the handler for five minutes.
Save the price of a bullet.

It was a shame they didn't cover the dog over any sooner.
I realise he's not human however IMO far more worthy of respect than some humans.

Not sure why a dead 'service' dog is not shown the same respect as a dead service person. I thought it was a bit rough to see it on the front page of the Herald and then again on the 6pm news.
If it was a dead policeman there wouldn't be any footage of the body lying in the open.

A working dogs life is not always a long one but it would have been a full one. I hope his killer gets what he deserves!

Although this event is saddening, bear in mind that this dog lived a better life (and quite possibly died a better death) than many thousands of equally deserving canines.

couldn't they make a dog size bullet proof vest?

Yes, a sad but true fact. There are some very unfortunate dogs out there who have been saddled with complete arseholes for owners.

no harm in reality, the public need to see the seriousness of it.
FARK yes...

On a cheeryer note... the view on TV of Cage on the deck, who noticed the Cat tip toeing across the road in the back ground? come on it made ya smile, wee puss was proberly thinking it was safe to cross as the doggy was sleeping.

Shooting a police dog should have the same penalties as shooting a Police officer

They already do.
Since front line police only have "stab resistant" vests', there is sod-all chance of them forking out $$$'s on some of these.

It was pretty disgusting that Gage was left laying in full view for so long. Covering the body would happen pretty damn fast if it was a police officer, so why the delay in showing respect to the dog?

I agree! if not worse penalties.
These dogs only ever do their job (and they do it well). Also unlike the officers they never made the choice to join the police they just happened to grow up in the force.

This was heart warming in the news this morning. Brock introducing himself to the young lad who sent flowers and a card to the Police station, heart-broken over Gage.212810

Bit of advice folks
If you're ever chased by a police dog never run over a see-saw or through a flaming hoop; they can do that!

I couldn't be a dog handler. I could not send my mate and colleague into a life threatening situation without being right by his side, as they have to do on occasion. But I guess that's their role.

Did I hear it wrong or something?

It's a sad but unignorable fact that police dogs are seen as expendable.
They have to be because that is what they are there for - taking the risk of incurring the grievous harm that a police officer would be facing if they weren't there.

Attempted murder, in regard to shooting the cops. Unfortunately killing a Police dog isn't classed as murder, though in my book it should be!

Agreed. This is one of the very reasons that I am looking at getting into animal welfare as a future career. Correct, they aren't human. But they still think, live and breath as we do - and in the situation of a Police dog - they live to serve. Their purpose is to serve. It's very vigorous training that they have to go through, like our Police Officers. They are often responsible for the added safety of an officer, and often sent into a scene first. They play such an important role in so many situations. I have huge respect for the work that the dogs and their handlers do - it just seems so unfair that the consequences, if any, are so low for killing a dog like this.

I must warn you, though, you tend to get attached to the dogs you are training, so be prepared to have some emotional farewells as a trainer. Very rewarding from all accounts by those doing it. Dogs, for some reason others here may understand, more than any other animal, seem to become "family".

While it took a long time to cover Gage up, the Police and the officers on the spot were and did treat him with the utmost respect.
I watched the footage and thought why is he not covered, only to see moments later one of the AOS guys walk over and give him a pat, that man was obviously deeply affected by what had happened to Gage and that the general public were able to see that ,may make a little difference when they see Policemen and woman as ordinary human beings doing what they do, too.
Well done Gage your boss lived to fight another day as did his and your colleague.I salute you.
I also wish you did not have to die for some low life, bottom dwelling ,scum sucking arsehole.
R.I.P Gage.

Sad to see a mans best mate down. Alot of time and effort goes into training these dogs, and they become a part of the handlers family.
He did his job, and protected his mates, and I hope they roast the muppet that did it with a decent sentence. Thoughts to the popo, get well soon, just don't go on traffic duty cause then I'll have to hate on you lol.
