View Full Version : Fogged and steamed up car windows

I'm sure others have posted reminders like this recently, but please be watchful for cars with steamed up windows. Twice in as many days Balu has had cars (one from a T intersection and this mornings from a driveway) pull out in front of him where the driver could not have possibly seen out their fogged/steamed/iced side windows.

Both times he has been ready for it - he's a very defensive rider - but it still doesn't stop his heart from doing a wee flip; all because there are drivers who get into their vehicles first thing in the morning and their brain is simply set on getting to their destination as soon as the ignition switch is turned. (Sod the fact that they can't actually see out their windows).

Between potentially slippery roads, less than perfect visibility for all road users, then top that off with drivers who don't bother cleaning their windows........ keep your wits about you guys.

People who drive off with fogged windows should be punched in the face.
Surely it's Dangerous Driving as the potential consequences are obvious to even a chimp.

Blardy fogged-up car windows, and the inconsiderate dangerous arseholes that think it's OK to just drive off with them like that. It's how my VFR750 got written off, and why I have a heel that sometimes makes it hard to get to sleep at night.
Here's a tip: if you're not sure if the moron has seen you, tootle them vigorously with your horning device. Don't assume like I did that they've seen you and that's why they pulled into the kerb, when all along it was because that was part of their morning ritual:

Stumble bleary-eyed out to the ShitMobile.
Fumble for the keys, drop them, pick them up, stick the wrong one in the door, drop them again, finally get the door open.
Take a swig of coffee.
Scratch balls.
Start the shitmobile.
Drive 10m down road, steering with elbow while trying to put seatbelt on.
Pull into kerb.
Crack a U-turn.
Wonder WTF that loud crunching noise was, and why the Shitmobile seems a little reluctant to turn right....

give them a little toot.........
You will know they have seen you by the torrent of abuse that they let rip towards you!
I was knocked off my bike by a person, and so now I assume that people will pull out on me and I get so much abuse! gotta love the angry cagers

How hard can it be to wipe the foggy stuff off your windows? I do it every morning....
Amazing really, the people that drive in their little foggy bubbles immune to the rest of the world.

Fogged up windows, well what the hell, the pricks can't see past the side of the hoodie anyway. I go with the 'punch them in the face' idea.

It's yet another symptom of how cavalier many motorists are about driving: not taking care of basics like visibility, failing to stop at Stop signs or amber or red lights, failing to indicate, failing to look ahead, failing to look twice at intersections, failing to think. I suspect D'Aucklanders may be worse for many of these failings, because expediency is everything: "Fuck you Jack - I'm in a hurry, and getting there in a timely manner so I have more time to (drink my latte / scratch my balls / read the paper / piss about and waste time / gossip with my workmates) is everything.

I suspect many bikers start off like this too (why should it be any different?) before they realise not giving their full attention could be a terminal error of judgment.
Strangely enough (or perhaps not), it was the fact that SO much alertness and attention was required that endeared me to commuting by bike. It was too easy to switch off when driving, whereas on the bike I arrived at work REALLY awake and ready for ...um... ahh...mostly snoozing at my desk.
