A Saudi Arabian tourist caught driving between 130km/h and 140km/h near Te Anau told a judge that he was not aware what the speed limit was.

Eiad Abdelmohsen Alfares, 51, professor and practising doctor, appeared in Invercargill District Court charged with driving dangerously on July 17, the Southland Times, reported.

After being caught by police Alfares pleaded ignorance saying his rental company did not tell him what the speed limit was.

Judge Dominic Flatley, however, found this hard to believe telling Alfares that New Zealand roads were not a race track.

Alfares was fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Last time i got that speed, i got a $600 fine and 50 demerits. Seems a tad harsh?

A friend of mine had a university professor drive his car in to the garage to be fixed because it was making funny noises and the oil light on the dash wasn't going off like normal.

first of all 140 is not speeding by any means.its bloody 3rd gear.... and people do it daily on the motorway. day and night. ive had people blast past me while i was doing 130. i've had cops go faster. its not fast. geez..

Yeah, sorry, 140kph is nothing on the flash uncluttered straight Milford Sound road, it's just cruising:shifty:, what was I thinking???

(but I think a constant 140 in 3rd in a rental Corolla would be more than it would want)

oh no mr tourist is going 40 faster than limit in areas near me. what a fucking big deal.
Mr policeman needs to spend more time in south auckland rather than chasing tourists who are going cruising at above the limit.

Parts of the Milford Road are good for 140, there are some great straights. I was up there once with a laser checking out the buses and got a Subaru coming out of a corner on to one of the better straights at 155. Time and place. I didn't see it as a great problem at that time in those conditions. Obviously the speed limit is the speed limit, but Dubai man is probably used to driving at much higher speeds where he comes from. No defence, but I hardly think he should be hung drawn and quartered for it.

for your info mista jafar 140 is flat out in our 4X4 & we actually get snow, ice & other kinds of weather that you would only see from your big screen, I was on that road the same day & :tugger: like him going at that speed with ice grit on the road realy just want to make me drag them out.... got the picture yet & as for racism they should have deported him as well :finger:
