I have been applying for jobs left, right, and centre, for the last few weeks. I have lost track of what I have applied for (reactive response to working with farktards and wanting to get the hell out) and been declined for some and completely ignored for others  - no real surprises there.
This morning I had a second interview at a rather large government organisation, they are impressed - of course it doesn't take much. And so they have put a verbal offer on the table.
$26.00 per annum shy of what I am earning currently and I have a feeling they are not going to budge on this start point  Now for those that have worked in large organisations or a government department will understand that roles are generally “salary banded” – this jobbie has 10 levels in the band and the offer sits at level 4.
So there is substantial room to move up the salary scale, the role itself is mundane (Administration Support) but busy – the later part I love. There is a huge opportunity to move sideways, up, over within the organisation also.
I have applied for an Operations and HR Coordinator at APN – this is the kind of role I would like to get back into, but unlike above, no real room to progress within this Company as far as I can see. This position closed yesterday so they will be currently culling the masses of CVs.
My current role has been affected substantially by the recession, and things will not pick up for the company for at least another year. This is adding uncertainty to my role and I have been made fully aware that "things" are to be reviewed in December.
So……I need a little help/advice from you lot as things are just whirling around in my head and I can’t seem to pin-down any helpful thoughts or feelings as to "where to next from here".

Ups and downs with choosing a job, go with a bigger organisation where you've at least got a few years of upward pay movement and some options to move around if you get bored, but you might end up feeling like just another pointless cog in a big machine. More specialised and interesting means you might like going to work more and feel like you're making more of a contribution, but nowhere to go might mean you're looking around again after a while and you're back where you started. Options are a good thing, if you can get a job where you have some without changing employers can be useful.

That is a great post - thank you. And certainly what I was initially thinking before all the bad mannered little voices in my head started ranting.

Now its a government org, it works on bands and then percentile. Generally, low end being 85% often being the offered number. There is no harm is asking for either more money or more leave (you can push to five weeks at times) ...
With the job I am in now they offered 10K less than I wanted and I haggled with both leave and pay and accepted pay being more beneficial to me. I now have the leave as well.
If they want you enough to make a verbal offer they will often be aware of the situation to know when they are pushing the bargain of getting you at a cheap price. Asking for me only risks them saying no .. it doesn't mean that if you still want the job that you can't take it. You can also haggle a three month review with a figure attached.

Hmmmmmmm I was thinking six-month review - but I REALLY like the sound of three-months. You is awesome.
Oh bums ..... now where did I place my haggle skills.
Weird how things change. I have never really been money orientated when it came to employment, more about the people and culture of the working environment. But having a mortgage certainly changed that.

If you are unhappy where you are and you get the offer of the new job take it.
There will be the period of the new surroundings and learning the new roll to keep you challenged until you relax and become consumed by the politics of the new situation, then it all starts all over again! :shit:
Before long you will be back on here, unhappy, applying for new jobs and asking for guidance!
Take the new job and little period of happiness that it will bring you and there is always the chance that you just might gel and work your way up to the top of the grade, beyond where you are now!
You have always struck me as an alert, sharp wee cookie, so back yourself and have a change for a while, change, they say, is as good as a rest!
Of course the final decision is yours, all the best, good luck with whatever you decide.

Depends a bit on your age and where you're at in yourself.
Interestingly Gen X (if you fit here) is tipified by their preparedness to move around to benefit themselves i.e more money or learn new things
Sometimes the appeal of being offered a job is that someone loves you...
Put the hard word on them at your current work and ask what the deal is re the future and let them know you have an offer. Tell them you're not interested in BS so tell the truth.
Their response may make the decision easy.
Otherwise, yes. Get the blue bike.

Its not all about the money, what are the other benefits, TOIL, compensatory time, sick leave etc etc.
I've been in Govt 25 plus years first with NZDF as a Serviceman, and now with my current employer ;)
The money, certainly in my early years was shit I started on about 9K a year lol. However over time I have learnt that there is more on hand than just money :)

Its the money...
D ya think I would be living in this backwater with shite roads, no bike and drivers from hell for any other reasons?
To assist clear thinking on a cloudy day I make lists...one job on one page the other on another. Write down all the positives for each job....if there is a negitive such as "Swoop works in the same office"...make it a positive on the other job..."Swoop does not work here"
Include everything small and large that could have a factor....social club, transport convenience, chance for promotion, may involve more or lest time away etc.
When the lists are good and long weight the different points 1(a minor concern) to a max of 5 (The main reason you want to change) If you can include a 5 for the job your heart wants, 5 for what your head says and 5 for gut feel.
You could add the same 3 x 5 pointers for your significant others opinion

Congrats on the job offer!
Don't estimate the "creep" effect of annual salary reviews, -- like compounding interest.
Somtimes priv/publically owned companies get the squeeze with hard times and that can affect the morale and work stress big time, whereas an SOE, while it works within budgets etc, will never bounce cheques!
Have fun, shout yourself something 'bike like'!

Controlled anxiety is the "incentive" that drives us forward to seek higher personal achievement! :shifty:
