87 400 Yamaha XZ starter motor help: can a 550cc go in?

Asking for a mate:

He needs a new STRATOR (not starter....not sure what it is ) for his 400 yamaha xz. Hes found it hard to find one but has sourced a 550 strator. Is this compatible?

Or does anyone know where he can find a a 400 strator and for my benefit maybe explain wtf that is ?

From memory the 400 and 550 starters are the same.

Its the alternator winding. It can be re-wound if you can't find one at a wrecker. But are you sure its faulty ? They do fail, but a regulator or rectifier problem is far more common.

Tell him to give up early in the piece. These things are one of the worst bikes Yamaha has ever made. People know this so they aren't worth much to sell.

they arn't that bad, the down fall to them is the stator gets hot and burns out, although im still on the original at 30000km, the exhaust system rear joint is an art to get on, and you need the right gaskets... which can't be bought in nz oz or japan :D
and the downdraft carbs, they are the most complicated peices of kit ever,
the engine is actually pretty damn good,
dohc water cooled vtwin,
they are massively over square so they rev, but there isn't a whole lot of torque
ill send you a pm, and if your mate wants to give me a yell, ill talk him through anything, ive rebuilt a couple :D

Sorry I didn't mean to offend, usually I am not critical of others bikes. But these are the exception. They are vile. Even from new. Ponderous handling, gutless, & ugly. A CX500 custom would be a preferable option.:sick:

it doesnt offend me in the slightest, i barely use mine, but as a commuter i can't really fault it,
as for the handling, its by far and away the best handling bike i own :D (not that thats saying anything)
i found once i put heaver fork oil in and added a bit of preload to the front,
and preloaded the rear, its pretty good, quite sharp actually,

i will agree to the gutless statement though, and thats solely because of having such a big bore and short stoke, not really the ideal combo on a v twin,
but she'll rev past 10k with out any trouble :D

it could have been a really good bike, but a few oddities let it down,

You mean the stator? (only 1 r) I think they are the same, it should be fine, finding buts for them is getting fuckin hard now, they all have shit electrics (used to have one) and most people had so many issues with them they just gave up on them... have a look at www.howstuffworks.com it gives real good, easy descriptions as to how things go!

yes I heard and read....but your world famous for it and I for one thought it took some balls :)

He def got ripped off...was sold with strator fucked. But hes got another one and just got to figure out how to get it in. I think hes only had one bike a while ago and was just itchin to get some wheels and is now paying for it. I went for a couple rides and bike ran good....till the battery went dead lol. Everything else seems to be kosher so hopefully he will get it in and that will be the end of his strator worries and his new worries will be where hes going to ride.

Keep ya chin up Carver I have no doubt that what you did will be remembered for a long time! But I will always remember you as my first coro loop butt smacker lol

Yamaha XZ's have chronic electrical issues...
Plus those down draft car style carbs...

a bike heap of shit, i had one for 6 months when i was in high school, and worked on it most days.
I never got it to run properly
I can remember having pistons sticking in the front brakes, the batt not charging, fork seals blowing, lots of shit, i should have just stayed away from the name YAMAHA
