I currently race an RG 150, in Streetstock class and was thinking about the future... and i realized.... there isn't really a class we can go into afterwords.
S/S is constantly getting new riders and so older ones must move on, but to be honest....
125's are thousands .... not alot of us can afford that. 600s are too big i mean going straight from a 150 to a 600 would be a huuuuuuge step.... and clubmans isn't a competitive class, so i don't think it would attract to many competitive youths.
Where has the 250 class gone?????!!??
I would be keen as to go out of S/S and into a 250 (or even 400 perhaps) class , the bikes a faster and more powerful , yet don't cost shitloads.
Can we make a step up class?? what do you guys think??
:)

you gotta decide what you wanna do. if you wanna be a nationally competitive rider, then theres only one option, 125's. There not nearly as pricey as you think and there are plenty of people who will help you out. It is the step up class from S/s no if's ands or buts. if its just club racing then ride whatever you like, theres pretty well always someone to race with.

But after looking at the numbers on the grids (at the South Island rounds anyway), the 125s were extremely low in attendance. How long are they going to be around for? This is where the 600/450 scenerio is suited in my opinion. Run one in F3 for a season or two then convert back to a 600 to step up to the next class. Its all $$$ though.

I hear ya chick! I have been racing a SS150 for 2 years and have finally had to admit defeat and sell the thing (it kept siezing pistons). I am not yet ready for a 400 or 65 protwin and we are lucky up here as Vic Club run a 250 minilites (250 inline 4's) class. So I currently have a ZXR250 lined up. I plan to race this for a year or two and then do the step up to Protwins.
Racing is always going to cost $$ no matter what you ride but maybe you could see if you could con someone into letting you take out there 400 or 650? That may help you decide a bit better? All its going to take for you to step up is to feel confident, that takes time! ;)
Good luck :)

the 125 grid was still much bigger than the f3 grid, and a heck more compeitive. a 450/600 will cost you as much as a 125 too.
I would have thought the 125 grid will grow again as most the big spenders (and their fast too) are moving on, so it needs new talent, its just waiting for a whole swath of new youngsters.

There is a class - Pro Twins
If you are small enough then 125 would be awsome, otherwise SV650s are easy to ride and not too expensive to buy / run depending on how competitive you want to be.
Of course, like any bike it takes skill to ride fast but I don't think a 650 is too big a jump from a 150SS.

the 650 jump is the same as going to a 400 4 really... unfourtunatley the stock 400s aren't quite a match for a sv out of the box - but you'll find a 400 pretty cheap.. theres a very nice FZR400 on trademe in auckland around the 3500 good to go. If you can get a 89 say ..... a ZXR then post classics and F3 is possible...... there one or two guys that do it and do it well. you can even win local championships on them:shifty:
But if you not mechanically minded/hate maintaining old machines Pro twins is the class for you.... just like the RG's ( i raced one for a good few years ) apart from changing dry tyres to wet ones, the rest CAN BE turn the key and go racing. National level is different.
And there will always be a market to move the bike if you decide to change in the future.

125's are the cheapest national class, you will learn more on one than anything else.
For an unknown reason 125's always get labelled "too expensive" when its a bloody sight cheaper than F3 and similar to pro twins (depending on how you're going about it they can be cheaper than pro twins)
We won the nationals in 09 on a very small budget.
if you want to go club racing however, just get an old 400 and have a wobble around... depends what you want to do really (as lostinflyz said)

What I should've said before, is if you're really serious about moving up from streetstock, go and talk to people. Every time you go racing there are people there that could probably answer all your questions to help you make a decision.
When you talk to the people that ride the bikes you'll get much closer to the facts, otherwise you only hear a couple of people's opinion.
if you need more info on 125's I can probably help

Honestly we were running 125's for years they are not that expensive really racing a 600 is alot more expensive not just the cost of the bike but tires etc,
a 125 is very very basic to run once you know the basics of running one you will find that there is a jet which will work at a indivual circuit eventually we were running in myne a 165 off the top of my headI have not ran one for a few years now but we had a a weather station and jet charts and that was the common jet for manfield.
A piston would last me a whole winter series and they are very very easy to work on!
They are a pure breed race bike they are not a street bike turned into a track bike these thingswill teach you so much about braking corner speed and just basic riding I was not a front runner dont get me wrong but I will vouch for a 125 being the best case of track time in my life.
I agree with a earlier post the class now needs a new breed of young talent go for it you wont regret it

Standard shock and forks modified are the best options for optimum geometry just need custom triple clamps

yeah I see Racetech are making a kit for them now. was reading a review done on a Aprillia SXV540 version of these by Jeremy McWilliams he said it handled better than all the Moto2 bikeshe test rode the same day

sorry but for those too lazy here is the spec class they run in thundersport GB, all modified aprilia sxv450's (called RRV's) by Ian Newton. God this looks fun. Class is run in conjunction with supermono's (800cc singles in tigcraft frame things)

bwahaha. 70 puppy dogs out of a 450 single. dream on.
The class in spain, which is probably one of the more advanced, they've been able to get about 55hp out of the motors, but they need rebuilding something like every 2nd or 3rd round they run.
A properly build and refined one In good hands would be reasonably fast, but they wouldn't trouble the nats grid, or even the pro-twin

one of these would be more fun to convert --->http://www.maicointernational.com/html/supermoto.html....the 500 would be legal in F3...67hp standard...a bit of a fiddle and it would be a giggle!!

i don't know where you've got stock 55hp from, but it aint what hits the ground off a half useful dyno. It may be possible to get slightly over this mark but it won't live for long, thus no one road racing them does. You only need to look at supermotards to 400's to get an idea how much snot they have.
on the times side i can only reference these really. If your as good as Scott, then you may have a shot at troubling pro-twin. Setting the time, and being able to race are two different things though.

either way its all in theory. If someone wants to build them, i wish them luck (actually). If you wanted to do it on a 450, you can buy kits with everything you need, for about 4 and half thousand euro, excluding gst and freight.

my observation would be that a 450 wouldn't really have enough power to scare F3
Jason Easton used to run a 450 in his tigcraft... it used to get beaten by Andy Bowell on his ZXR440 or 450 down the straights. now Eric De Boer has the same ZXR and it doesn't have enough power to stick with the 550 Jason has now and 650 of Glen Williams etc etc.
I'm sure at club racing anything can happen (and does) because the pace isn't fast enough for it to matter as much

That chassis wasnt designed to take that engine, but know what your saying, would be interesting for him to ride his bike back to back with a motocross framed 450.
Scotts results at Wangnaui are pretty sharp for a club race.
