View Full Version : Reevu helmet- trickest of the trick

MD

For those with helmet fetishes like me I tried on the trickest helmet of them all today- with rear view mirror built into the helmet on the inside of your visor. So so cool. Good looking helmet as well by the way but I've no ideal how practical e.g. changing visors or cleaning inside or wind noise.
Still a great ideal to see what's directly behind you while Keeping your eyes straight ahead. No more shaking mirrors half filled with your elbows. Really works and surprisingly sharp rearview. Helmet captures image from a plate at the back of helmet, bends the image over the top of your head to a display immediately above your eyes -AND it does not block or distract your sight ahead. It would be great for racing so you would know who's about to pass you without having to turn your head a milimetre.
Wouldn't work too well with a pillion on unless it was a topless model but I just don't have that sort of luck with pillions.
Don't believe me, go to Reevu.com or pop into Sawyers.
To pricey for me at the mo but hopefully they will come down over time. Oh yeah if you're interested $899

Hope you don't have cooties MD, cos I'm going to try that out this week - toss up between that and an Arai Condor Schwantz replica.

Wow that sounds really cool! If only they had nice designs other than black or white

Ooooo - sounds neat. I want to try one, but only if I can admire myself in the rear view thingy.

Shame the website doesn't have an example of the helmets rear view properties.

Good find. :niceone:

Gareth D - see reevu.com website for the 'how' I simplified it to 'bends the image' And under the mountain bike helmet section are photo views from the riders eyes- check them out (someone asked)
Gazzar- the one I tried was gun metal grey, a good match for your bike
Jim2- it's was a large size for big heads (and still my ego couldn't fill it) but if you want to try it on...
Biff- I forgot to mention it has a courtesy light and make up holder

MD - Where in wellington did you see the reevu? I'd love to see one in the flesh, saw it a couple of months ago on the net somewhere and thought it was an excellent idea.

EDIT - just read your post again... as you were. :niceone:

with rear view mirror built into the helmet on the inside of your visor. So so cool.Sounds like you'd literally have eyes in the back of your head, I'd love to try that!

Thinking about it, I'd say it would take some getting used to, and it could easily change your whole motorcycling experience if you used it regularly and came to rely on it. Hmmm, not sure that I'd welcome that change?

Ah yup,
just been to have a look!
It's quite cool, the demo one is way too big for me though.
What i didn't think about was what happens at night. Is there a way to stop the glare from the car behind you?

overall, it is a cool idea but I would want to give one a good test before I purchased.

Damn good point. On a lot of cage rear view mirrors there's a flip-up lever. Arseholes sitting up your date with their lights on full can be bad enough in the side mirrors but you at least have the option of leaning forwards a tad to get the light out of your eyes. The helmet would need some kind of readily accessible way of redirecting the light to spare your eyes - preferably straight back at the arsehole in the cage...

put your sunnies on the helmet backwards??

Actually, that is a very cool idea. Can see racers loving it. Just wonder with a sports bike's head down, bum up seating posi and the tilt that puts the helmet on, if you'd be able to see ahead?

No mention of certification, Snell, DOT, CE?

It certainly did have a shell with some dots painted on it and I could see out of it. Your typing was a bit off Lou but I think I covered your questions. Anyone would think I was the salesman here.
Somehow I can't imagine they spent millions of quid developing the science, research and marketing development to sell these safety helmets worldwide but forgot about safety regulations. Oh, and I understand they already sell then in the nanny state of UK.
With or without dots I liked it and would probably get one next time I change lids, but not without trying one on the road first. The safety issue alone of seeing fully what's coming up behind you appeals, no blurred vision (apart from riding home from the pub) or trying to spot those annoying fuzzy red and blue lights some cars have that tailgate you.

They do ,they do! I mentioned it earlier. Go to their site and look under the mountain bikes/leisure/recreational cycles (it was something like that, but not under motorcycles) then scroll down and click on "What you see" similar view to what the wearer of the m/bike helmet gets.

Too true... let alone an XXXL... why do nearly all helmet manufacturers ('cept Arai and Bell) think riders have small heads?

If they read some of the posts on KB, they'd realise that bikers more often than not have big heads.

So far as their opinions of their own riding skills go, anyway... :devil2: :devil2:

Reply to my enquiry via the the Reevu website:

"Hi Jim,

The helmet is available initially in Matt / Metallic Black and Silver.
It is certified to EN 22.05 for the European market. It does not have the DOT certification yet but will have this when the helmets go into the US as this is the requirement for the States. This should be later in the year due to the huge demand here in Europe

Nicola

PS where did you try the helmet?"

hmm i wonder how you would deal with carlights behind you, specially full beam  the light would be in your eyes no mater what you do, at at night this means you wouldnt see much out the front :spudwhat:

Im not sure but i recon it might be an issue worth investigating if you are interested in the helmet :ride:

Cycletreads has one of these helmets on display. Looks good in theory, however upon close inspection it would not be suitable for all bike types, a sprots bike for instance would be staring at the sky.

It doesn't work with sportsbikes unless you're looking for aircraft. The rear view mirror only works properly if you and your head are sitting upright. Otherwise you will be looking into the skies...

Did YOU try the search Korea??

Anyway CaN, I think some KBers in Wellington tried on these helmets when they first came into the country this/last year and reported they were quite cool, not that anyone bought one mind you. :spudguita

Please excuse me folks - I've merged 3 of the Reevu threads into one.

It is a cool helmet, and even though the one I tried was a little large, it was quiet, didn't fog easily, and the mirror was definitely a positive bonus. I tried it on a GSX600F which is a good deal more upright than the R6, and think I probably would be looking at clouds on the R6. It would be absolutely perfect on the CB400 though.
