View Full Version : Getting into it all - Advice from the racers needed

I'm 19 and I have been riding now for just over 7 months now, clocked 12,000ks on my first bike, a 250cc hyosung GTR.

I am asking for help on fast tracking myself into racing, I have a decent salary from work while at uni that leaves me with about $400/week for financing, but with loans available to buy a start off bike to learn racing on.

I have zero track experience but ride as hard as my bike will let me on the open road twisties (I have found that my bike can no longer keep up).

Whether it be advice on what bike/class to begin at - whether a few track days / straight into it. Or whether its on what bike i should have, I would be very glad to hear from anyone.

I had this urge a while back and has not left me, but i have been spending money on getting proper gear, I have a really nice lid, alpinestars SMXR boots and some Berlik leather gloves; i have a cordura jacket but i feel a cordura jacket is unsuitable, so I will need to be buying leathers too (is there is a rental place to begin with?)

again, anyone happy to give me tips at track days/race days, im open to it; love to learn, and love bikes.

Cheers!

Try find some second hand ones, Trademe has plenty but you might find a bargain at the likes of the Leather/Army Surplus stores (The one in Onehunga had a few one pieces for sfa last time i was there)

Hey mate - sorry I have no advice for ya, but just wanted to say good on you! I know how you feel and I am in the same boat - going to give it a go next year when I'm in a better spot to do so.

Wishing you all the best, follow your passion and go for it! I will be following this thread with interest and take on the advice too.

Thank you very much, I feel like all I spend my time doing is watching motoGP, looking at bikes, or riding, uni is bland and i only go because i ride there! All the best!

First off stop that carry on. There is a cbr600 f2 in the biketrader section on this site for $1900 that would be perfect for track days moving onto racing. Best of luck and keep the road for riding and the racing for the track.

Click on the links and fill your boots!

The leathers are top quality (I've seen them myself)

The bikes need there tyres kicking first but look like they would be a good start into racing.

How much do you want to spend?

Get the Hyo on a track day and get an impression of what racing might be like.

Theres one thing to ride fast on the road and another to ride fast on the track. The thing is on the road you think your going fast but your not really. I would suggest Andrew Fords new race class, $500 per session on new bikes with good tyres, see what you think about racing then depending on finances go to streetstock either on a 150 or if you can afford it find an aprilia RS125, you can run them in streetstock as well. If you want something faster an RS250 would be a real good learing tool

Dont go to a heavy old 600 or it will put you off!

That bike is a very good deal but I dont think its right for you....

Yeah streetstock in designed for beginners
I personally did a few track days before racing because I didnt want to be last, but thats just me

You could always start in streetstock and if you get bored go up to F3, though I know we dont all go very fast but there are some dam fast (for streetstock standards) boys on 150's there, you learn a lot, and crash generally without hurting yourself too much (I know!)

250 2 stroke is my dream but there is also, 650 twins and 400 4 strokes (NC30's/ZXR's and the like) in F3 so a bit of choice

Good advice!

I would recommend the California Superbike School for not only racing but to improve your riding all round. Check them out.

All Interesting solutions.

I would pm someone in auckland who does buckets and get the info and have a look.
If you do buy an RG150 or KR150, make sure you spend a couple of grand on a well sorted one, or else you will get really good at rebuilding them. I promise.

And even if you do get a good one for a couple of grand you may still be rebuilding it all the time!

Ok bhest advice get into it

But dont buy a cheap helmet its theonyl thing stopping you being a veggie

And dont buy cheap leathers get somethign with a decent name I can tell you from experience I started racing and used a set of old leathers a guy had in his barn first crash they blew to pieces lucky it was only doing 50ks but I got a gash in the knee.

You dont want to injure yourself and sometimes cheap just isnt good spend a little extra but know when your sliding down the tarmac that itl be safer

When it comes to bike gear eg: Leathers, Helmet, Boots and Gloves ask yourself 1 thing, How important and valuable is my life while out riding?. This will help you with making the correct decision in buying the best gear you can. Having the correct gear is your only protection and hopefully the best protection from saving yourself from serious injury if your were to come off your machine.
When it comes to getting into Racing for the very 1st time and with limited money you really cant go past Streestsocks 150. Its fairly cheap, heaps of fun and a Great Class to start your Racing from. This class is of good size and usually consist of very close racing, and the bikes are stock standard which keeps the spending down.
As you get more and more experience and your money can eventually go a little further then there is nothing stopping you from moving up to other classes such as Post Classic Jnr or Formula 3 and even further down the track maybe into Formula 2.
Goodluck with whatever decision you make as its always good to see another Racer out there whatever the class they chooce to race in. Enjoy.

If you've already got a Hyosung GT250r - Chuck some race fairings on it and race it in Pro-light's.
Good fun in with the 150cc two strokes.

All good advise with regards to gear. Don't cut corners here get the best you can afford (I have a set of Joe Rocket leathers that I no longer use - PM me for details if interested)

Definetely get on track ASAP by doing a few trackdays - riding on track is completely different from riding on the road (well, it should be!). When you are at the track talk to as many people as possible and also get in touch with your local club who organise race meetings.

Have fun and good luck!

I'm keen to get into it too mate. I've taken a look at the entry forms for AMCC events at Pukekohe and asked around in the trackdays forum here on KB and they're all about full-license and leathers that zip together.

You can probably spend as much as you want on leathers but I found that Quasimoto was able to do a good deal for me, send Quasievil a PM with your measurements and he'll be able to give you a price. You should be able to have your full license before summer which is when heaps of trackdays and racing happens.

See you there!

all my money till now has been on good gear, just looking for leathers before i race, I own A pair of Alpinestars SMXR boots, Berlik Gloves, Shoei XR-1000 & cordura jacket. I spared no expense for my safety gear and i made sure all fits perfectly. I have been looking around at track days etc and a 150 2 stroke looks good to me - An RG150 to be precise, just curious whether maintenance is a thing i can do on my own?

Yeah its piss easy, I can help you go over the whole bike so its ready to race + do a piston and ring for good measure!

Yeah they are relatively basic things, plus plenty of people around who know them inside out!

Found a MOTO TT trackday up and coming on the 14th August and considering a go, most likely will not have the RG by then so may take the hyosung for a go out on the tracks, would be riding in group 4 - so the novices, just that way to get a feel for what its all about and be ready for when the Track days become more frequent.

Most likely that i will find a RG forum and do all maintenance myself - i find that tinkering is alot of fun
