View Full Version : Bike getting tampered with while parked?

Yesterday I took my cbr600 to work (I work at uni), and when I got home I discovered oil all over the right leg of my pants and my right boot. A quick look at the right hand side of my bike and I saw the problem - my oil filler cap was gone.
So at this point I assumed it had probably fallen out while riding, but I was a bit suspicious about it and wondered if some clever chap had decided to remove it for me at uni. When I got in this morning (on the zxr), I parked my bike in the same spot and what did I see? The filler cap from my cbr sitting on the ground. So it seems like there are two options:
1 - The cap had rattled loose on the ride in and when I got off the bike I knocked it out with my leg/foot.
2- Some fucktard thought it would be funny to remove my filler cap while my bike was parked.
So what do you think? Am I being paranoid? There's some real dipshits in the world, and it has often occurred to me that bikes are particularly vulnerable to vandalism while parked. Fortunately I have access to a locked room here that I can park my bike in (and will do on days when I bring in the cbr now), but it's a bit less convenient than just parking it and putting the bike lock on.
Oh and while I'm here - anyone got any good ideas for getting off cordura?

More likely to be 'busy' fingers.
Drain the old oil now and replace. Filter too. You don't know what might have been put in there, do you?

I park in the basement at work and yesterday when I went to leave some arrogant tossbag had dragged my bike away from where it was parked so he could park his cage there. I was ropable and went straight back upstairs to find the person and told him how lucky he was that I didnt stick my boot in his car window. Im not sure how the dent got into his car door though.....
re yopur codura; my bike kind of blew up and splattered oil all over my coduras. I chucked them in the washing machine with a small amount of washing powder and they were sweet.

Don't know about keying it, But I would have let the air out of all four tyres. Wants to park there, they can stay there for a bit longer.

Yeah I thought that would be wise, I've only recently bought the bike so it's probably worth changing oil/filter regardless.
Str8 Jacket - thanks for the tip, I was a bit concerned about washing the pants (I'll have to check the label but I did think you weren't supposed to?)

Well yeah I alway's tend to go against the norm. You can buy special codura cleaning products that you use inthe washing machine but for the past 5 years I have just washed mine in a gentle wash without too much washing powder and its been fine. My grandfather would've probably recommended sunlight soap but hey!

I was about to suggest some evil plan to express your 'disappointment' at their actions, but then realised there would be little way to know it was actually the driver of that car that did move your bike.

Except I know it was as I went and talked to them and I also have video evidence (for a video camera that they installed, which is probably why he didnt argue)....
Anyway I dealt to it at the time! ;)

Sweet, in that case open up a whole world of hell on them. And never let them forget, you don't mess with other peoples property. Um unless you're proving a point that is lol.

Let's say the carbon knuckles made him change his mind.

I have zero doubt your oil now consists partly of coke or fanta. drain it now. filter also.
I have the same paranoia about parking mine in town (2001R1) Thankfully, it doesnt happen all that often, but now and then people will fuck with it, like pulling on the levers etc. One time, when working as a doorman, I watched a guy kick my XZ over, intentionally. I calmly walked over to him while he was still kicking it, and bashed the shit out of him. He didnt realise none of the doormen were going to help him out cos I was their boss.. Lesson, If parking in an area where that shit is likely, park it where you can easily see it. Oh, and despite what you'd think, parking it near a university is one place where its more likely to get fucked with than other places, I know this from experience.

Clearly you have yet to park outside a bar/pub.

Would it be difficult to find a oil filler plug with an allen key head on it? It's not likely you'll ever need to top up oil in a place where an allen key wasn't available.

No, I was a doorman.. I wrote this in my original post.. What i was saying was you would think that a university would be a relatively safe place, however its as dodgy as outside a student bar at 1am on saturday morning . . .

I had a borrowed scoot once, when it was out of my sight some clever chap wound out the idle screw on the carb. Suffice to say when I hopped on and started it I went straight at the nearest wall at speed. Thank fuck for killswitches.

If you do trackdays you should have safety wired sump and filler plugs anyway so no need for fancy allen key plugs...
not saying its fool proof but definitely would slow down some "busy hands" trying to unscrew it and could slow them down enough for you to catch them in act and break their fingers (or nose if you prefer)...

A large serving of dog shit, packed up behind the door handles has worked well for me,on occasion.

I knew this hardcore surfer dude who would do that to people who stole his wave. Except he didn't use dog shit. Like I said, he was hardcore.

Can do and they aren't expensive either.
Phone Jace from Moto Style (http://web.me.com/thekiwis/Motostyle/Home.html) and he will sort you out. He's in Auckland too.

I was walking along where Taranaki St and Courtenay Place meet one night and in the bike park I saw some scumbag urinating into some poor buggers helmet attached to his bike!
uni is really bad in terms of bike tampering. some idiot stole the headlight protector off my bike at uni (the ventura ones are velcro-ed on) presumably risked permanent hearing damage from the blaring alarm... then a few weeks later carefully left it on my bike as if to say "sorry."

...theoretically anyone with a very rudimentary tool kit can take more than your oil filler cap off your bike...
Was at uni one day and found a bike with the key in the ignition! (hmm now to ride of or to b a good Samaritan)...
Decided to write a note and stash the key on the bike, i felt for the guy as i have done this on numerous occasions

If the person that fucks with your bike comes prepared with tools then you're screwed no matter what you do to it. I was just thinking the allen cap oil filler would stop random dickheads who do this sort of thing on an impulse.
