View Full Version : Cellphone reception in microwave oven?

According to a post on 'tother half's health forum a microwave oven should sheild a cellphone from incoming signals and the phone in the microwave shouldn't ring.

So, into the trusty old microwave with my cell and call it with Maggie's. It rings!

Does that mean our microwave 'leaks' as the post on the other forum claims, or is the theory bollux ???

You need to make sure the Microwave is going when you try to ring it.

Let me get this straight. If you climb in to a microwave oven with your cell phone then you will be protected from the radiation your phone puts out by the shielding in the microwave. But your phone won't work.

Forgetting the fact that you are either a midget or have a very large microwave oven, I can't see the point. If I put my phone in a bucket of water it doesn't ring either.

If I recall correctly a microwave oven operates around the 2.4Ghz band - so it should only be blocking energy in that band.

Mobile phones operate at considerably lower frequencies, from about 850Mhz up to maybe 2.2Ghz (could be a little wrong, memory a bit fuzzy on this).

So if your phone stops operating in your microwave oven it means the microwave oven is blocking the wrong frequencies.

The shielding in a microwave oven is not precision designed to only block the frequency of the oven's magnetron.
Why would they go to the enormous expense to do that?
So idiots could climb inside one and still use their cellphones?

Really, the experiment proves only that cellphone frequencies can get INTO a microwave...the question really should be can that radiation get OUT? Might be like a one way mirror...

Personally I always stand well clear of my microwave on those extremely rare occasions that I actually use it...never have trusted them noo-fangled doodads...

Hee hee hee haa haa haa haa! Oh this is too good. Celphones use anything from 850Mhz to 2150 Mhz at .3 to .5 of a watt. Microwave ovens use a directed signal at roughly 2500 Mhz at anywhere between 850 and a 1000 watts. Theoretically a runnng microwave could possibly mess up an incoming celphone signal but who the hell would want to try it? Its like the physics version of masturbation. Entertaining but of no benefit to anyone else!

It's pretty common for microwaves to leak at little RF. If you have a wifi network at home, you'll probably notice that it slows down or stops working completely when the microwave is turned on.
