Flip out like a Ninja: cost of new fairing?

My daughter binned her 09 250 Ninja this morning going up the Brynderwyns :gob:. It was about 7 and still quite dark and she hit a hole in the road that threw her into a tank-slapper at 100ish. Fortunately she was heading into a slight bend and the bike slid off the side of the road and she was able to get up and get herself off the road :baby:.

She's bruised but otherwise okay (good gear!) bit the Ninja is fairly munted down the left side. I suspect the insurance company may write it off as they tend to do but as far as I can tell there's no frame or mechanical or wheel damage, just broken left fairing, foot peg, mirror, indicator, bar end, scratch on front fairing and rear cowling that could probably be repaired. If they do write it off I'd seriously look at buying and repairing because it's a great little bike with a yoshi pipe and fairly new tyres and chain.

Anyone know the cost of fairing panels for these and if anyone does aftermarket fairings?

Call a kawasaki dealer, it's bound to be $1500+ for genuine parts, or there are heaps of aftermarket on ebay, I got all panels for my old blade for $680 landed, and they are nicely painted to.

Firstly DONT go to your local kawasaki dealer

The reason the write bike off with cosmetic damages is due to the ridiculous pricing of genuine kwaka parts....

I'm gonna be purchasing some for my bought back ZX6RR and they come in a wide variety of colours and styles. It'll be cheaper with the shipping than just the top fairing of the kwaka (was for the 600)

if your pretty handy with a tool or three shouldn't be too hard

Also look on ebay for parts as they tend to be cheaper with shipping than from a shop. Have bought all mechanical parts for kwaka for the price of one locally as well...

Actually the insurance company paid up and replaced/ painted everything even remotely damaged - (like a new the rear axle that had a very small scratch). It cost $1000 excess but total repairs were about $4000! For a one-sided drop! It must have been borderline for writing off but I guess being an 09 it's still worth quite a bit.

Just to add to the ludicrousness, the fairing they quoted you doesn't come with the sticker that says "Ninja". The sticker is an extra $48.65.

I rode the Ninja back from Auckland to Whangarei last night in the dark and rain and really impressed by the bike. I haven't ridden it for quite a while.

They are pretty light though so I can imagine how hitting a rut in the road hard could easily send you into a tank-slapper -especially for a lighter rider. They handle well on smooth roads but the suspension lets them down a bit when it gets rougher.

I told her if it happens again to hit the rear brake - to me it just feels intuitively right to do that to break the oscillation cycle. Anybody else got into a tank-slapper on a 250 Ninja?

She's thinking about a 600/650 when she gets her full licence and wants a sports bike but something with a similar riding position to the 250. Any ideas which would be most like it?

I 2nd the SV650. The Ninja 250 is more of an upright position (grips above the seat on the horizontal - well that's how I judge it) - so the naked SV would be a natural progression. Don't have to worry about a drop damaging fairings either! (plus you can get some quite cheap frame sliders for them too).

The SV is about 170Kg dry from memory. It's a good 20kg lighter than the latest Gladius yet has the same lovely vtwin engine. 70hp / 60nm at the crankshaft especially for a lighter rider will give her everything she needs. Damn - mine hauls my 80kg arse (plus stuff on the packrack) no problems!

Fuel economy is not that good though. About 20kms / litre at best (I'd wager the ninja probably gets around 28km+/litre).

Everything else fine. Replace the rear shock with a GSXR1000 and put in some emulators and it does wonders for the suspension.

I always got 22 - 25 km/l from my K7 SVS without even trying. Mind you the S version has slightly higher gearing...

Get her an R6. It has no steering damper so she can have more tank slappers.

Remind her that a 600cc will me cheaper to register every year. Anything from 601cc and above attracts the higher registration fee.

600's are fun and easy to ride if you know what youre doing...

Just remember going from like 33 HP to 118 HP could be very interesting..
