Is being advertised... Not a bad watch but why do soooo many people dislike him so much. he was a bloody great player and had a voice like an angel and lets face it - if you could write just one song as good as his best your would be well pleased.

I've always been a bit of a fanboy and think 'live at the Sydney Opera house' is a fantastic album. Its been on every family holiday in the car - real sing a long stuff...

Oh well

We (wife and I) liked his music. Maybe it just appeals to people of a certain age / era. We have a couple of his LPs in the back of the wardrobe

Now I'm going to have to either dig out the turntable and spin up the vinyl again (or find the tracks on the 'net) to revisit.

We've got a Barry Manilow album in there somewhere, too. Not everything from that time was good.:shit:

For those who remember Jacques Cousteau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Cousteau), John Denver's song will mean the song used in a TV show that was cutting edge technology for undersea exploration.
Calypso (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calypso_(ship)) was a piece of junk that was made into a seaworthy explorer of the world's oceans.

BLOODY 'ell! She is still around, even after being sunk!

the fact is - the man sold a shit load of records and wrote some bloody good songs. He did some top TV shows (Tonight show stand in, The grammys, christmas specials, even the muppet show). He was a experienced pilot, poet lauret of a state, hall of famer and a noted environmentalist. Yup - he had a bad patch with booze and drugs etc but he achieved a hell of a lot BUT mention him and many people go spaz as has been demonstrated here... I just think its very odd - he was amazingly popular and globally known...

My question is why? personally I think he gets a raw deal...

I was exposed to John Denver a lot as a kid, my mum and Gran both liked his music, and many of his songs bring back good memories for me, so I would say I'm a fan. I love Annie's song (played it at our wedding, the words are :weep: ) And when I was a kid one of the guys who used to drive a truck for my dad looked like John Denver.... except his glasses were a little more coke bottle like

All about an individuals choice. I never liked JD...but I'm not gonna knock anyone that did.

A 750 Shadow on the other hand...All I've seen from phill-k is shit, knocking what others have to say. And he rides a 750 Shadow. No wonder he's so angry and negative.

Good music for the time I reckon, he could certainly sing beautifully and knew his craft well but I think to a certain degree does'nt translate fully into this era like some other singers/bands music does. Another words I listen to a tune of his once and think "yeah that guy had skills, good music". I'm not inspired to download any of his music to the iPod though.
Which reminds me, must scour iTunes for some Doobie Brothers...

First ever music I bought was Glen Cambell's greatest... (I think it was his greatest hits) Used to go out to the Old man's '74 ZG Ford Fairlane (Ozzy assembled) and listen to it 'coz we did'nt have a tape player in the house at the time.

I was putting it down to artistic temperament... and maybe brinking too much ;-)

I was more really interested in why people have such a violent negative reaction to him...

"Annie's Song" is a goodun to play on the guitar (one of the handful of songs I've bothered to learn, but probably wouldn't have, but for the guitar night class teacher covering it). It's a lovely song (despite apprantly taking him only 10 minutes to write!), but I always wondered how he could write such a beautiful song about someone then divorce her (or did she divorce him?)

What is cool one day can be so uncool the next....I know i am showing my age here but lets look at Bucks Fizz....One day they are bigger than sliced bread, the next they fade into the musical Hades that is the sale bin at the local record shop...

John Denver was one of the great Troubadours of the 70s and 80s...I still love his music, along with a lot of other Country music

We have Tubular Bells here.
When I first met Anne, we talked about obscure music and I thought I had one CD that would take some beating...Mike Batt/Tarot Suite....turns out Anne had it on LP!
I think James Duece has it also?

Here is my favourite track from that album..

Thats a wee bit too 70s for my tastes Mark, but as far as folk music goes I do not think you can go far past Suzanne Vega and also Gillian Welch for good singer songwriters...

My favorite from Suzanne Vega, from her self titled debut album back in 1986 I think
The Queen and the Soldier

And Gillian Welch, Look at Miss Ohio from her album Soul Journey....fantastic album that one

He did - he was a pretty experienced and well qualified pilot. The experimental plane he died in had a strange layout and when it ran out of fuel in the main tank at low altitude there was no room to recover.

Umm... The Long EZ isn't "experimental" ("homebuilt" would be a better description) but a widely used aircraft around the world. Oddly a very stable aircraft.
The fuel issue coupled with an inexperienced pilot (for that type of aircraft) led to disaster.
