I think the point PlacidFemme was making is that it is a small minority of right wing whites hanging onto the countries colonial past that still call the country Rhodesia. Or by its former colonial name Zimbabwe Rhodesia.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the first 'genuinely' elected government of the country dropped the colonial Rhodesia bit there were a large number of whites there that not only refused to accept the black governments decision to call is simply Zimbabwe, but also displayed racists tendencies by refusing to acknowledge the transfer of power to a freely elected black government as opposed to an enforced white 'regime', and in tern an end to apartheid in the country.

There are no 'real' swear words in the Welsh language D. Plenty of slang, but nothing you couldn't say to a priest.

Malu cach is roughly translated as shit stirring, or muck strirring. As for the second phrase, a perfect example of Welsh slang - "twll din" has no direct translation into English. But is a made up phrase by North ‘Walians’ as an equivalent to "Fuck", or "Fuck All" to be precise. But because it has to direct translation into English you could say it to a priest without fear of insult.

An American couple visiting Wales last year experienced difficulties with some of the place names.

They went to Llanfairpwllgwyn gyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and, unsurprisingly, couldn't pronounce the towns name.

So they went to a local restaurant where they said to a lady that worked there, "Hey lady, could ya please pronounce the name of this place veeeeryyy sslllowwwllly, my wife and I just don't seem to be able to say it."

"Quite easy really", replied the lady, "It's Buuuurrrrggggeerr Kiiiinnnng"

I'm Zimbabwean so I can comment on Zimbabweans... And I didn't say they weren't worth socialising with, I just expressed my own personal experiences with every (yes EVERY) Zimbabwean and South African I've meet so far in New Zealand. NZ is my home now so what happens there doesn't bother me now either. And I never said you nor anyone else was self centered.

Your looking into something that isn't even there and making assumptions about what I said and how I feel. So your judging me for defending myself for answering/correcting a statment that someone else made... which makes you as wrong as it makes me (not that I'm wrong). So you judging me is just as fair as me judging you (which I didn't... and I'm not taking a dig... but I was right again... your taking the defence over something that wasn't even directed at you).

..

This is how Edward I conquered Wales.

It took the Welch leaders so long to tell their men where to go, and for their scouts to report the English positions, that by the time the Welch actually got round to turning up at Llanfairpwllgwyn gyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch or wherever, the English had either buggered off someplace else, or captured the place.

The English have an innate genius for dealing with foreign place names. Just mangle it. "Eglwÿswynllÿw ? Wot ? Eglwÿswynllÿw ? bugger that for a game of soldiers. St. Woolos is close enough. Etaples ? Woz that again. Oh yer mean Eatables ? " After a bit the mangled form replaces the original.

Of course the Welch also suffered from the tactical disadvantage that all their troops were called either Morgan or Davies. A bit of a problem in battle "Oy, Morgan bach, look out behind you - no not you Morgan, t'other Morgan - no not you, him over there - oh, yeah Morgan The Head Chopped Off. Oh well, Davies, get that English bastidge oh hell "

But you know what.... :whocares:

Look, I don't mean to drag it out but:
You did say "This just reminds me why I don't socialise with Zimbabweans and South Africans they think everything is about them and if its not they make it so just so they can complain about how hard done by they are"
which led me to believe that you didn't think SA or Zim people were worth socialising with, and that SA and Zim people were self-centered (think everything is about them, or revolves around them).

So, I don't think I was looking into something that wasn't there and if I was judging you (I was merely making an observation from what you posted) it was based on something you said directly. I certainly don't think that you were "right" again, as I took offense at something directed directly at me, being a South African, with whom you don't socialise. Ask all the people I have met on here, I'm not the way you describe me to be. Infact, I think ofmyself as a rather friendly person. I re-iterate, I think it is you who seem to be hung up and overly defensive. I also find your lack of compassion to be rather unattractive (when you say who cares repeatedly). I do care, and my intentions weren't to attack you in anyway.

Now, I must agree on another thing. Quite a few South Africans I meet seem to talk incessently about SA. I think that this may be conceived to be what you are talking about, that they are all hung up on the past. I personally think that it's more having a common interest to talk about. I find it hard to make conversation, and if I meet someone from SA, I do use that to start the conversation. Like you, since I'm living in NZ now, I don't have any concerns for SA, or any other country for that matter.

I think we may have gotten off on the wrong foot. Here  :)
Cheers.
Dave.
