Straddlebus!

I would imagine that quite a few paedestrians, scooter riders and motorcylists could be killed by that contraption.

actually it's a stupid idea.
look at the movie: they begin their discussion pointing out that when a bus stops all the traffic behind it would be congested.
but they are filming situations with 3-5 even a tenth of buses on the lane.
then they come out with this phenomenal idea, but they let us see just ONE of those "cranes" moving on the road.
think at a tenth of those things on the same road and you'll get a mess anyway.

but further on, you'll realize that's pretty impossible to use more than one of that on the same road segment.
and that it HAS TO be on rails to remain exactly within the black/yellow gates below it.

so it's not an alternative to buses, but to trams.
then you'll realize that trams have much simpler infrastructural needs (a bare pedestrian stand and not so much more...) than elevated stations, lanes forbidden to trucks, and so on...

so it's not an alternative to tram either, but maybe to metro.
but metros do not use surface space, it does not affect the car traffic at all, it does not limit your surface vehicle transit in any way.

at the end it's something which loose the competition with any of the present transport modes.
to me, it's much simpler, cost effective, and flexible to make an o-bhan system...

It's like the underground train system, cept without the underground bit, still gotta make stations etc, railing cost is far less. However getting through intersections would be interesting, perhaps lowering the road to provide an offramp or something would do it.

pfft, firstly is not my idea! secondly, the main advantage with this system is somebody cannot ride around on top and shoot you through your office window while you are in a board meeting or somesuch. Also rails on the ground are probably cheaper and more visually appealing than the raised ones.

If you're going to have to dig up the road to put your rails in, then the raised rails sure ain't going to be a helluva lot more expensive overall.

yeh, i was assuming it would be a whole new thing rather than adapting existing roads, would imagine the foundations for the rails would need to be pretty fucking solid, I still want to know how they sort the intersection thing out, spose they oculd phase the lights to give the bus's right of way all the time, maybe drop some barrier arms alongside the rails just to make sure too?

well big rail to 'train' ratio you got there, straddlebus has a smaller footprint, but with a bit more overhang is all.

But it appears the traffic would have hassles at ground level negotiating the legs. Monorail would be easier for "ground level" users.
