Hi people, has anyone been on one of these rides. I know there are a few clubs that do them.
I am aware of the South Island circuit, of which I don't think is doeable at the speed limits lol.... However there are a few other ones around that run them too.
I am thinking of going on one in October, just want to know if anyone has any experience and stories to tell.
Also who runs them, and if they are fun, challenging or just stupid. If they are stupid then it's probably all good lol.
The one I am looking at going on is Auckland to New Plymouth to Wellington to Hastings to Taupo and back up to Auckland.
Looks like a hoot. :scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter:

The South Island one, the Chatto Creek 1000, is doable at legal speed limits. We have had bikes as small as 175 cc complete within the time available, and I'd love to do it on a 125. However as I'm the organiser, I can't ride it at the same time.
I'm in the process of preparing the entry forms for this event right now.
I'm not aware of the North Island one that starts in Auckland, I only know of the Rusty Nuts Grand Challenge. Can you provide more details?

The run I am looking at going on is an informal local riding club one. They do one every couple of years or so as they deem interest. Only about a dozen or so riders, mostly on cruisers. No timelines other than the 24 hours, and checkpoint proof at each stage point which is advised at start.
Certainly sounds novel, something you do once perhaps. I circumnavigated NZ cpl years back with a bunch of buddies, that was fun.
Whats the endurance like on these runs. Do you stay pretty amped on the trip, or do you juice up on V, coke and coffee....

The Grand Challenge and others obviously all involve extensive night riding, so I did some overnight practise rides before I did the Rustys event. Actually on a fine night - is a great time to ride!
Cowboyz and Jantar are spot on - it comes down to "keeping moving" and thinking beforehand about gas stops, where you'll take in food etc.
I sat down for a hot meal on mine, battled with torrential rain at times, debris across the forest road etc etc and stil lhad a blast, and finished with a few hours to spare.
I think people are generally 'pumped' at the beginning - ie itching to get away, then itching to rack up some fast distance initially, but the tortoise and the hare are a good example.....

It's purely personal and everyone's methods are different but here's how I prepare and do the ride: http://geoffjames.blogspot.com/2010/07/1000-miles-in-24-hours-part-2.html Mind you, I'm 63 the day after the ride and haven't done it for 7 years so I'm preparing like the old fart I actually am

What does the tortoise ride?
In this particular case an ST1300.
Size does not, however matter. The 'round Australia' record was held by a Z1000 decades ago, then beaten by an XL175.....

I'm looking forward to October. All going well GC number 6 will be completed on a Shiver, otherwise it's Plan B on a V-Strom Thou.

In my case its a VStrom. I find that rather than try to ride super fast, i tend to ride at a comfortable speed, and make the stops as short as possible.

1000 miles in 24 hrs is quite doable (even with rain for 20 odd hours). Search grand challenge on KB for the rusty nuts, plenty of threads. Don't consider if you do 300 km during day and consider it a long ride.

Looking forward to fine weather for #9 this year...
PS: I thought that the Chatto Creek event was dead??? I'd love to do a 1,000 miler in the South....

Not dead. It was cancelled last year after a fatality on a club ride. It was always intended that it would continue, and I hope to have entry forms posted out to previous entrants imediately after our September club meeting.

I'm sure anything is possible if you stop for a line or 2 every now and again.

Glad to here it (though not about the fatality). 2012 maybe my year to give it a bash.

I assume everyone varies re hydration. Nothing beats good sleep tho. Some use coffee, others start with water then slowly refill in increasing quantity of V / red bull etc. I just use mizone throughout, not too much liquid, not too little.
