View Full Version : Got abused for doing the speed limit

On the way home this afternoon, I noticed this 4x4 following me, no worries as there was tonnes of road between me and the 4x4. Turn onto a main road and this guy is suddenly tail-gating me hard out. I check the Speedo, which was reading 60km/hr so I’m not going too slow. This guy then jumps in the next lane, accelerates and then starts swearing his head off at me?! I reply: what’s your problem  and then turn off. When I got home I re-ran the ride home over in my head to determine whether I accidently did a dumb move (like not indicating or cutting this dude off) and deserved an ear bashing. I come up blank  and conclude this dude was just an idiot in a hurry. He also looked like an overly aggressive dude with some major attitude problems and a police record. I also wondered, since being on a black shiny racing looking bike people expect you to be going fast all the time.

Some people are just aggro. To be avoided, not confronted.
Just wondering (not saying it's relevant):
- did you have an "L" plate showing?
- was it a 50 km/hr area?

It could have been a million things. Something he had for breakfast. The topic on talkback radio. The cat you just ran over. He might have been on a hands free cell phone call and not talking to you at all.
Not worth worrying about.

I should have an L-plate (naughty naughty) but don't have it on at the moment and it was a 50km/hr area.

Ignore him. Even pull over to let him pass - it's not worth messing up a great ride or your life.

He was so jealous he wasn't on a bike, he was just angry due to his small appendage and the fact that his mum doesn't let him have toys to play with.:sick:
Don't worry, plenty of dicks on the road, they frequent the streets and are usually lookin for trouble.

Some one said on this board once, that it is all well and good "being in the right" but the guy "in the wrong" will still come out on top as car versus bike - the bike will always lose.
I often think of this when I get cut off by a car or some cager drives like a dickhead - they will always "win" if it push comes to shove, - just give the crazies some room so they can go be crazy somewhere else....

His problem not yours.
While that is essentially true......sometimes other peoples shit becomes ours when we're on the receiving end of it.
Fwiw, I would attach the L plate and see out the remainder of your 6 months with it displayed. Many on here advocate leaving them off when you're on your L, but most people are more likely to be considerate when they are aware it's a learner they're following.
Having said that, what others have said here is also true: there are just motorists out there (of all number of wheels) who are ignorant pricks with egos the size of Texas. Some one else said avoid confrontation, and that's really the best advice. It doesn't matter if you're in the right, it's not much consolation when an apeturd, of any gender, decides that their needs are more pressing than yours and puts you in harms way.
Sounds like you've done everything right (except displaying the yellow thing :msn-wink:) so just chalk it up to valuable experience which had no serious consequences this time.

I've given up trying to figure out other motorists behavior. In the car & on the bike i have been flashed, tailgated & abused by other drivers when I'm travelling at the speed limit. Why? No idea, don't care. On the bike, if I feel intimidated by this behaviour I get out of the way, pull over or make room for them to pass safely. I'm not going to pick a fight with a feeb in a car I cannot win.
Their never seems to be a cop around when you need one, as they floor it in a 50kmh zone.
I console myself by hoping that whatever has caused them to behave so stupidly is really fucking with their lives & heaping misery on them.

Wouldn't worry too much about it mate...I had a wanker intentionally drive into the back of me at a set of lights yesterday after I tried to wave him off the rear of my bike when he was tailgating me.

I don't think most people know that motorcycle L-platers are legally oblidged to go slower anyway. I agree with pzk... one to be avoided!

Yeah .. I love playing with cages that do that !
The last one was a Ford ute (V8) ... sitting on 90ks ... then sped up when I tried to pass him ... we got to 185 klicks ... I pulled alongside his driver's door (window down) and changed up a gear ... the look on his face was very funny ...

I used to get the same sort of thing on my first bike, but for some reason I found having a bike with a noisy can seemed to help. I never get abused (unless I am driving like a c*nt, which can happen occasionally) and most of the time people just get out of my way.

How accurate is your speedo?
speedo maybe 10km over, but i checked it on one of those electronic speeding signs today and my speedo was 5-6 km/hr over. So i was doing anywhere from 50 to 55km/hr. Like i said i was doing the speed limit.
I think cagers expect bikers to ride like c@#ts the whole time. I had another 4x4 right up my date this morning as we were chugging along in the traffic until this dude goes flying past us (on a black Ducati) filtering. I thought f@#k this and decided to follow and got the hell out of there! Unfortunately it may be safer or of less frustration if bikers live up to cagers expectations to ride like c@#ts. But I kind of like just cruising sometimes, but it appears this just frustrates cagers because your taking up those 5 extra meters in front of them which equals 1-2 seconds of their lives.

Not relevant to your filtering incident but relevant to the one above:
Own your lane. It's yours and you can use the whole width of it. If you ride on the left like a scooter or bicycle then cars will see you as a nusiance who is not far enough over for them to get past.
Stick to between the middle and right hand side of your lane (if not already doing so) and they tend to respect you more as another road user.
Also, if someone is tailgating too close in slower moving traffic then moving about in your lane tends to make them back off a bit. I like to practice avoiding manhole covers and white road markings in slow traffic meaning that I'm nicely weaving about my lane at times. It's my lane after all. The erratic movements seem to make them a bit wary and they leave a bigger distance.
Not all cagers are as bad as the crazy van driver you ran into. The 4x4 was probably just being inconsiderate not aggresive. Enjoy your rides but don't resent the other road users.

get in front at all costs & stay out front. Do everything possible to remain there with out getting busted for speeding or riding like a Cxxt. Much nicer ride when not surrounded.
I find that most cars do seem to half expect you to squeeze past as soon as they slow for lights etc so I try not to disappoint
PS try not to take too many mirrors with you on the way to the front.
