View Full Version : Wellington - slippery road section joints Aotea on/off ramp

Hey KBers - has anyone in Wellington noticed the "repairs" that have been done on the motorway section by the ferry terminal/Aotea Quay off/on ramp? There used to be metal joiner strips that went across the road (at right angles to the flow of traffic) but about 2 months or so ago they put black bitumen-type seal over the strips, making the joint section now about 300mm wide. OK when you are crossing over straight on, but when getting onto the motorway heading north these sections are not only slightly angled, but you are also slightly leaned over as they occur on bends in the road. You also have to be accelerating to join the traffic flow. Ok in the dry, but in the wet it is a definite "moment" and I'm just waiting for some less experienced biker to arse off . . . Well done (again) NZTA (not!!!) :shit: Be warned.

I've noticed even in my car, going 'round the gentle left hander a bit further on, that I get a bit of a bump 'n' slide.

Yes, I noticed it too but have only recently started riding that stretch of road regularly. Just hope I never need to break aggressively across them in the wet.

Perhaps LTNZ will make an ex-Gracia payment to ACC on behalf of us motorcyclists.

there was a rider down a month or so ago where the rider came onto SH1 (Aotea on ramp), heading out of town, and for no apparant reason went ploughing into the barrier after crossing all 3 lanes... I wonder if this was taken into account...

FFS you lot. Complain to the authorities like Str8 Jacket and try and get something done rather than moan on here. You never know, you might save someones life rather than have to ride past a white cross every day thinking if only.

Ive ridden this on ramp a number of times recently and I cant figure out what the hell you are complaining about. There are way bigger roading fish to fry.

Hmm and here was me thinking that this was a "forum" where issues and items are raised and discussed . . . and yes I will be contacting NZTA - FFS.

Yeah, those are interesting little fuckers.

The PR2s are a little skittish on them. 80kph in the wet is ok, but get a little more lean if they are greasy and you are up around the 100kph mark and you get a definite walking of both front and back tyres.

Alright, you got me. I posted because other people agreed with you so there is obviously a problem that has been around for a while and yet it has not been fixed. If something is that bad you should be straight on to the authorities to get it sorted. Posting on KB won't solve it for the poor sod who is less experienced than you and arses off. I guess it is raining in Wellington tonight ?

All cool, Berries - I do agree with you too about action rather than grumbling all the time . . .

This shouldn't require a petition, they've been told by at least one person that they are a hazard and LTNZ should be able to check/see this for themselves, I doubt they will give a flying fuck, just as they keep using slippery road paint, placing steel manhole covers on bends and erecting cheese cutter barriers. At least if we piss and moan on here word may get out to other riders to be on guard!

It's not the north bound (Aotea) on-ramp, if you are using that then you have bypassed the problem which is on the elevated section of the Motorway before it reaches that on-ramp.
