The fairings are a little tired in places, couple of small dings in the tank.....
i think it would look good with the belly pan left on, speed triple twin head lights, Buell X1 small fairing, Renthal or similar bars, custom paint....etc

Not sure how it would affect the steering geometry and whether I would have to cert it. Any clues?

i wouldnt do it. the money its=d cost to do that would be so bloody close to tidying it up back to original. spend the money getting it repainted in the rarer factory red/white scheme. Those 98-99 R1's are quickly becoming collectors items in some parts, especially the red white ones, and are holding their value very well. thats my opinion anyway. either way, keep us updated

Yes, just do it...thats what i wanted to do if i kept it....

Buy another top triple clamp and get it drilled for Dirt Bars,or get one of those hellishly expensive LSL kits(looked at em for it myself).

Keep all the stock parts stashed away for when/if you sell it so it could be returned to stock.

But you'd have to paint your tank yourself....
Unlike recent bikes where the tanks are just another plastic cover.

Pull the top fairing off and check out the stock headlights, it's quite a sexy arrangement minus the fairing, better than the boring everyone-does-it street triple look, which is sooooo last century.

Waddaya want from the bike though? A street fighter will remove the temptation rip it over 200 klicks and get intimate with a judge if/when you get caught, but it will also spend more time on the back wheel than Travis Pastrana's bike. The geometry won't change but the weight distribution will as you sit more upright.

The first gen R1's are becoming slightly collectable but realistically it's not gonna appreciate in the near future, more like just stabilise in value. The 98 will be the one most folks want anyway, even though a 99 is almost identical (slightly different paint).

While it's not a minter I'd just enjoy it for waht it is, and do track days, club racing, sports ridng without the fear of wrecking something more expensive. They're a great value bike. But it's not about the bike, it's about what you ultimately want it to do.

I would but only if I went the whole hog...exhaust,paint,triple clamps, bars, mirrors yada yada.
Riding an inline litre in an upright position is bloody hilarious and as mentioned a far easier way to keep your license too.
Be aware, it could cost you a lot more than what you first think but then again you end up with 'your' bike and not just another mass produced Jap bike :scooter:

Had a feeling you would say that haha....mate of mine has done it and the ride position is a blast. Nice having a good lump of power and handling to boot.

Dont really get enough time for track days etc......I do a couple of big rides a year but generally blasting the Takaka hill, Tapawera, Moutere Highway etc and these are quick 4-5 hour blasts . Not a lot of 220-260+kmh runs, just not what I look for (high speed runs), Im more into shreading the edges of the tyres. I do a bit around town but find the position a bit aggressive for much of that even with risers.

Go for it!
It gets a tad windy at 200+ with no screen but as you say, you're never really at those speeds anyway
If you do go down that path, have a look at www.customfighters.com

It's a brilliant site with people that really know their stuff.

Warning though, once you start the mods, they wont finish...

99% of streetfighters are badly thought out, badly exectued, half finished looking pieces of shit. You should definitely make your bike one of those

well if it was red/white from factory, Id say thats even more reason to take her back to close to original. you may prefer differently, however Im of the opinion that manufacturers take their spotsbikes and produce naked version anyway, which are a better base for a streetfighter, than an originally fully faired bike. just my opinion, but Id definitely 'invest' in doing her up to her former glory

Bit like home-made exhaust systems ;)Hey, I had to know if the design would work before comissioning a finished one! (btw, it didn't, but I know a lot more about resonance than I did). The final product is seamless and gorgeous :bleh: Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that most street fighters looked like bikes that've crashed.

What a spiteful sarcastic spiel. Usually I'd agree with what this chap has to say.
I see no reason to change that position.

A mate was going to go that route & has the crashed R1 in the garage collecting bits (project going 4 years now). Even he has decided Streetfighters are soo last century & is putting it back to stock. Investigate race fibreglass as a stopgap, at least in a simple white it won't look tragic & will still be a useable bike that isn't off the road for ages.

Projects take years, trust me.

dont street fighter it, but take the opportunity to make the bike into exactly what you want.

i like the idea of doing something similar to my R6 this summer, I want all my friends to make some sort of contribution (that preferably aren't penises) no matter how small.

Yeah, that looks kinda cool. You & yer mates should be able to knock something up to look like that after a couple of beers, should look just as good.

That MotoGP lark - they aren't so fast. I reckon I could 'ave em.

It's your bike, you can do what the hell you like.

Stick a blower and some proper nitro in it if you like.
