View Full Version : My first broken bone - VMCC round 4

15th August 2010, 13:13
After having a fabulous day on friday, grinning in my helmet the whole time, race day rolled round

It was wet but not raining, I have to admit I dont particularly like in between!!
I qualified pretty poorly, couldnt get past a 250 that got away from me on the straights but held me up in the corners

Think I qualified about 11th

Race 1
Start was a bit shit but managed to get into turn 1 in front of quite a few people, was riding quite well, felt ok from the test day, especially dunlop! Even the back section was going quite well, I wasn't such a pansy on that corner with the patch!!
Gareth passed me and was riding really well! Ryan passed me and I passed him back in the back hairpin. Coming down the front straight of last lap gareth runs wide in turn one (his back brake got jammed on) I continue, coming into higgins Ryan is on the outside of me, we both brake late, i start to tip in, he hits me and then in lying on the outside of the track, stuck under my bike!
I couldn't lift it off me because my arm was fucked! Think I hit my head too and was knocked out for a few seconds
Wasn't too sore but got progressively worse

Palmy ED managed to process me really quickly, guess because there is sweet FA they can do about a broken in a few pieces shoulder blade but give you a sling and some sweet painkillers.

As always thanks to Billy/racefairings.co.nz my lovely sponsor who gives me a bike to ride

The lovely ambo staff.....they pushed me into the ambulance even with much protest from me saying I was fine!

All the people that came and asked how I was

The marshall that got the bike off me :)

So my first broken bone is out the way.....I would love to be back for next round though that may be a bit wishful....we will see what the fracture clinic says next week.

Mostly Im gutted about being robbed of my what would have been 5th place in all of streetstock!!!

Shit mate. Welcome to the busted shoulder club and glad to see that you are still in good spirits. Some people I wont name were having a chuckle about the potential for you to be a challenging patient for the ambo peeps. Of course I told them to stop being so insensitive. :innocent:
Heal quick Rach.

Rach is insisting I get her nurses outfit out and wear it. Think I might.

Bugger!

It was a pretty challenging day out there, quite a few falls and plenty of "moments" had by many of the riders.

Hope you heal quickly :)

How was the bike?

Oh I don't know. I was talking to a burly chap the other day who had been Harley browsing recently. He mentioned that he thought Pete was kinda cute, if you liked them mature and bite sized:yes:

Bad luck on the broken bones, but have you ever thought of getting some new leathers? Those ones have been pre-magnetised to the track surface by the previous owner perhaps? Get well soon, all the best.

Actually still the current owner...they're only on loan! If I didn't eat for a year...I'd be able to fit them again.

2nd fracture clinic appointment

My movement has massively improved, chatted with the consultant about racing round 6 and he says, as long as it still isn't hurting, I can race! Yay! Now to start physio, I cant guarantee you I will be the star patient!

My last xrays were healing very well....it doesnt look much but I keep getting told its a pretty nasty break

While there I tried my networking skills and consequently the consultant said I should put my name down for his team on the ortho run next year, my dream specialty!
Orthos LOVE their sport and I think he was taken that I was racing a bike haha, yay

Below my latest xrays healing nicely! (black areas are the bone healing, I love the new technology of the xray computer software!)

Were those X-rays with or without the leathers on ???
Are you sure the bone calcification isnt just a leather repair from Pete's old crasher days (before he got too fat )

Okey Dokey
17th September 2010, 20:49
Great to hear that you are healing so well! Are you going to customise those leathers by adding a "scar" mark on the relevant broken bone? Not sure if you have a scapula showing on that suit or not :)

You're welcome Rach.

Just caught up with this......
Yup, I had that sinking feeling you had done a bit of damage to your shoulder..... Let it heal good.
See you at round 6.....

I intend to be racing you then ;)
Actually, sit out round 6 too, if you aren't quite up to it... Pleanty of time in your future to race again.

hahaha nope these xrays weren't on the day, they are a few weeks later haha

And I was awesome enough to take the leathers off before I realised how much it hurt

Hi Rach

What was the recovery time for your shoulder? How long before you got clearance to Work and Race?

I highsided my LC at TRRS and broke my left Scapula, have just had my 2nd Fracture Clinic appointment. The Dr not a fan of bikes.................Didnt ask about when I can race again.....
He found a damaged ligiment in my right thumb and another ligiment by my colar bone that isn't flash as well.

Starting physio tommoro

Didnt do bugger all damage to my bike, Bent the foot peg and a dent in the tank. Was bummed out coz I held up the other riders while I had a lie down on the Track,
Sorry everyone, I did try and get up but fell over again and the Orange hi vis blurry things/marshals told my not to get up. I had had little tweety birds flying about too

Thanks for helping Janet, Robyn and Andrew

I was back at school after a week but I didn't do any physical exams that I couldnt do one handed.
Racing, I was going to race round 6 of vic club (2 months after) but I had one of my pathology finals on that day and they wouldn't let me sit it early so I could race
In hindsight it was probably a good thing...I think I could have raced but it was better for me to heal properly before I got back on

My first fracture clinic was a week after and my second a month after or 6 weeks, I asked then and he was all good, he made a special trip in because I was med student and was shocked I was racing bikes but he loved it haha....I guess you are in hawkes bay so its no good me saying go to my ortho :bleh:

I was lucky I didn't do ligament damage! That is often the worst stuff

Just be good at what the physio tells you....go swimming when you can it will help strengthen the shoulder moving as a whole

Ahhhh it was not like you were tired and thought you might have a wee lie down on the track....

Yeah I was stuck under my bike otherwise I would have got up too....probably a good thing I might have fallen down too!

I dont get a work return med cert till the 22nd Feb at this stage, then need one for MNZ, Might make Rd 2 of the Royshill buckets, Dont think I will race my LC till BRM/Pacific Series 2011/2012 Rd1. I will help my son with buckets a SS150 instead. My ribs arnt helping matters, hurting like 40 bastards.

Need to get my TZR ready (lights and road gear back on, take off slicks, cant do 0ne armed) for Trashy's Welly Two Stroke ride, My LC road bike is ready and my mate will take it.

Had 1st round of physio, got some exercices and doing some stretching, even ended up at work yesterday showing a pack house how to fix one of there carton erectors. Busy time of year for me ..........................Usually

I didnt mind lying on the track after the morphine and that awesome gas, 3 deep breaths = no pain, 4 deep breaths and I didnt even care my leathers were getting cut off

I dont thing the hitting the track and bouncing then sliding on my head till I stopped then falling down did me much good, Adrenilen is a amazing thing, still wasnt anought to get me to get up tho, half way but that was it

Been window shopping for a replacment helmet, cant even lift my arm to try one one let alone pull on the straps

Hows your shoulder now? Any problems?
