Mobile phone help needed

I purchase a mobile phone off Trademe (a Sony Ericsson w760i) and are having trouble accessing the internet, email and gps.

I have taken it to the Vodafone shop and they told that because it is an imported phone, it is not set up to work on NZ internet networks.

After some research on ther internet, I have found out that it is possible to change these settings and enter them in manually.

My question is - does any one know what the settings are supposed to be so that I can use the internet, email and GPS features on my new phone?

Consider changing to 2 Degrees. I bought 2 Sony Ericsson T707 phones overseas & like in your case the settings were wrong. I phoned 2 Degrees free, spoke to a real person here in NZ & they send the correct settings to my phone. Problem fixed. Vodafone phones work on 2 Degrees. I took my old number & they paid me to change. They are very helpful unlike vodafone.

The guy at the local vodafone shop was great and really helpful. He tried to find the phone on the vodafone website so he could send the info to my phone, but it was not available. I am waiting to hear back from the seller as it was stated in he auction that it would work. Fingers crossed!

2 degrees will be next option. But don't want to change my phone number.

Trying to remember what I did to mine, bought an O2 cocoon that had trouble with connecting to the SIM, but a couple settings later it was fine. Give me a second

Oh, GPS doesn't work on Vodafone I've found. They block it as much as they possibly can as they sell their own GPS software that you have to subscribe monthly to(Vodafone Compass). Some phones can bypass it but most can't. Had both of mine(Blackberry Storm 9500 and LG GC900f) fail to run GPS on Vodafone(wouldn't pick up any satellites and would just keep searching and searching) as well as when using third party software, including Google Maps, when I switched to XT it worked immediately without issue.

Here's the generic settings, you'll need to find the options yourself for changing.

Really? I'm on Vodafone with a N95 and use my GPS constantly. I've not come across this issue before.

Yup, the only ones I've found to work are iPhones albeit I've never used an N95.

If you have look in the OP, he can't access GPS even though it has nothing to do with Vodafone itself, it picks up satellites. A-GPS accesses cell towers, but it's in conjunction with regular GPS which will still work, just not as accurately.

The N95, if it is the same as my N85 actually has a GPS compass inside it. It doesnt work out where it is based on information that the cell phone network is telling it.

The link to geekzone should have what you need, but here a more simple summary.

For vodafone, there are 3 APN (access point name) I know of:
- www.vodafone.net.nz (primary, default on most phones)
- web.vodafone.net.nz (secondary, ran out of IP a while ago - but working now)
- direct.vodafone.net.nz (third one I got from them)

In all cases, there is no user name or password, normal authentication, and if you get asked for the data bearer (or what sort of connection - eg wireless), choose packet data.

As for where to find the settings... not a clue on your phone. Standard option would be under settings, connections, maybe access points?
