Anyone catch old John with his drinking guinea pigs to see how many bottle they could put away before reaching the legal limit for driving?
I was amazed to see how many were well on the way to being pissed as newts yet still came easily under the limit to still legally drive.
Steven Joyce issued a statement saying that the govt will not do anything about dropping the limits until there is New Zealand specific research to show that doing so would impact significantly on the road toll. WTF????
Oh, but we'll get those bloody dangerous 2 wheeled contraptions off the road because we all know how much THEY cost the country...... C*nt!

This is something that is in the 'too hard' basket.
Some people are too wasted to be driving even when they're under the particular breath alcohol limit that applies to them, and other people are still fine to drive even when triple the particular limit.

I do like a drink however I'm not a big drinker.
If I drink more than my comfort level and feel a bit tipsy, I won't drive.
But I could still legally drive because I would still be under the limit.

How many people do you know blowing at 1200mg/l breath are "fine to drive"? I have met many at that level and they are very very drunk and not even close to being "fine".
Sure as heck, they get FINED. Shame the dickhead twats dont get JAIL. Selfish dangerous pricks.

So we should let those people who can't handle their booze drive on the roads and put the rest of us in danger, because there are some out there who can handle their booze? :weird:
Just lower the bloody limit and be done with it. I've long been of the opinion that the limit is too high, ever since I was tested one night whilst drinking at a police bar. I felt quite unfit to drive (and didn't), and yet I was still legal.

They were averaging about 2 beers every half hour. The 28 year old 120kg? had a dozen before he was finally over the limit.

This is not new news. Some of us have known for years how much you actually have to drink before being over the limit - when someone gets pinged for drink driving and they swear they've only had one beer/wine? Bullshit.

I was referring to the youth limit in the '3 times over the limit' statement.

Lowering the limit won't achieve anything, the current laws aren't working for the hardcore recidivist offenders, why would new laws make any difference? We all know the government is trying to keep people out of jail.

You get the death penalty in some countries for drink driving, now that would most definitely work. LOL

I agree re your last comment there. No limit or law works for those that break it.... or isnt that stating the obvious.

The marketing campaign '2 standard drink limit' was amazing, most people still believe this is the case.
The reality is 'it depends', but for most people it takes significantly more than 2 to be over the limit. Makes you wonder just how many those blowing at twice/three times the limit have actually had.

It seems that many people think that lowering the breath/blood alcohol limit for drivers is the magic bullet to lower our road toll, but sadly that is not the case. We need to tackle the root of the problem (which is something very difficult to do and is something I don't have the answer for) before we will see any noticeable decrease in alcohol related vehicle fatalities.

It's a can of worms. The test is not really relevant.
Take 4 people who are convinced by the prevailing propaganda that they are automatically bad drivers if they have a drink and put them in front of a video game where there are no consequenses to an "accident" and the results will be poor.Put them in a real car on a real road and most people will compensate for their inebriation by driving more moderately. The aggressive "bad drunks" are the problem.
I recall an experiment where a group were told they were drinking an alcoholic drink (they weren't) and they started behaving like drunken fuckwits.
Back in the MOT cop days I was told by a cop that the problem lies with a small subset of drinkers and they should be harassed to the point where they no longer misbehave or give up driving all together. But that requires real human cops and not the robots we have today.
But concentrate on alcohol because it can be measured -forget about driving while distracted (radio, phones passengers etc) because the robocops might get into an arguement with the offender.Ignore failure to keep left.
It's just more bullshit promoted by RoadPol.

Never a truer word said.
Concentrate on the repeat drink-drivers that the court system repeatedly slaps with a wet bus-ticket.

Excellent post by Pixie.
The actual limit is not important, as no one actually knows if they are over it, until stopped and tested.
Drivers therefore fall into two groups.
Those who self limit. They will not drive when they feel they are unsafe.
Those who could not care less. They will drive regardless of the rules.
Lowering the limit may provide more "catches" just as lowering the speed limit would. But it wont stop a single real drunk, he will be driving anyway.

They were averaging about 2 beers every half hour. The 28 year old 120kg? had a dozen before he was finally over the limit.
Many people seem to forget that a normally functioning adult male liver in an average sized person can break down one standard unit of alcohol per hour(this is why alcohol has standard drink units on the label, so we can figure out how much we are drinking!). ie: 1 x 330mL bottle of 4% beer (think lion red or tui). So if you drink 2 beers in the first hour, and one every hour after that it will be quite some time of continuous consumption at this rate before you go over the limit and obviously 2 beers per hour will halve this time - remeber that body mass affects this considerably too, at 120kg the person in the trial was considerably larger than average - for the sake of a good story I wonder why the journo's didnt pick a 55kg dweeb - answer, because it wouldnt support their view that the limit is too high.. When I was at uni , the alac recommendation for men was 2 beers in the first hour and one every hour after that - add a meal inbetween and there should be no issues. However if you go scarfing down 5.5% beers at 2 per hour, without food ,expect to hit the limit much faster.....

what about later on tv last nite, highway patrol or something? The big behemoth lady who swore she only drank one bottle.. "A bottle of what miss?"...."Ahhhh, bourbon officer"
She was so much more composed than the indian lady on cambell live who was legless after two beers, now if only more ladies were cheap dates like her . Im sure that massive woman would have been sweet to drive.

Well no more Robotussen for you then!... or mouth wash (tho the blood test will clear that one), or Bundaberg ginger beer / lemon lime bitters (after all an avg .2% & .07% (respectively) is higher than 0). So off to camp you go!

The problem is that some people are drinking too much alcohol before they operate a motor vehicle. It's a simple as that. Do you have a realistic solution to that problem?

It would certainly get rid of the recidivist drink/driver problem we have.
Same would go for lifestyle criminals..... oh if only. Imagine how few of us would have to become victims of crime that no longer happens.
I would relish seeing all criminal scum well and truly punished for their crimes. Make prison a REAL punishment, not a free holiday camp with bed and board.
This country is way too soft on criminals.
