Centre stands - where have they gone?

On buying a bike with a centrestand again I cant tell you how much I have missed this since I had my old 2001 1200 Bandit.
They really are good, especially when u want to clean the wheels oil the chain and do general maintenance.
Is it cost, is it weight, that manufacturers don't tend put centrestands on sportsbikes.
For the additional 1 kg of weight they put on a bike, I reckon most bikes should come with them standard.
I know most touring bikes have centrestands, I dont think many Harleys do. More of the older bikes seemed to have them than new bikes...why??

My KTM has one but you can't have the side stand and the centre stand on at the same time :angry: Stupid design!!

I think on sports bikes it is ground clearance issues as well as weight. Thats why the have paddock stands.

My CG125 had a centre stand. I was really happy when it fell off one day while riding it, because the centre stand would scrape the ground on just about every corner.

The '07 F117 has both a side and a centre stand factory fitted as standard.
I guess the centre stand gets used the majority of the time.

It can be done. The 1150RT Beemer was cool to scrape the centre stand on sweeping corners.

The 1200RT has been designed such that to scrape the centre stand you have to really crank the thing over.

I think the problem is that so many of us want the lightest, fastest thing on wheels, we forget that we aren't GP racers, and actually have to use the thing in the real world.

That has encouraged the manufacturers to go on a drive to cut weight. Ironically, they cut weight and add dollars.

My FZ1 was well setup with the centre stand. Ground the pegs first

Well cant argue with that. But I think we should give subsidies to women buying skimpy swinsuits though. Just to stimulate the economy of course.

Albeit I'm relatively new on motorbicycles, I've found my centre-stand on both bikes a god send.
First bike was 88 and had one already installed, had to manually install the one on this, but it was the first thing I did when I got it back to Auckland.

Have installed an electronic chain oiler, but still find the stand amazingly useful if just to level the bike and hold it stable when I'm pulling it apart.
