Not sure why people liked the RZ500. Rode a few, and thought the frame/suspension was crap compared to the RG.
Useable power was brief, and that one is probably restricted to the shit house via cdi/carb size etc.
Still, each to their own.

I've never even heard of such a contraption. Long live the 'big' smokers!

The background in those photos looks remarkably similar to the backgrounds in a couple of auctions this year for an RG500 and NS400R.... I would certainly like to have a poke around that garage.

So rare to see such a good condition RZV though, especially including a seat cowl. Gotta love that V4.

I did a few miles touring the NI on the RZ500 and loved it, it did have a high speed weave when cranked over through fast sweepers but I found putting a decent new tyre on cured that though, I didn't ever get to ride a RG500 as several people told me they were considerably better

Any big two stroker is cool

I didn't ever get to ride a RG500 as several people told me they were considerably betterThey feel more 'frantic', not really better to me as a road bike, but probably more fun on the track

Modern, cheap, easy to get bits (late model sports bike suspension, lighter, better sized wheels, etc etc) would probably make it easy to sort one out, and you could definitely take a lot of weight out of one without much trouble (the chambers are really heavy... and there's four of them). Ironically given my previous paragraph, as far as I'm concerned the TSS500 has completely killed revisiting the RZ/RG500 dream for me. Old, slow, pieces of shite, in comparison.

Still sound kick arse though :D

Well it would have been on the same bike wouldn't it?

I'd love one, but I'm trying to reduce the number of bikes I have in the vague hope that it might mean I'd actually work on some of them and have them all running

I've basically run out of room (although I could squeeze another in at a pinch). No hurry to do anything, but might swap the RGV for an RS (and then replace the engine with a 500). I'd like a Victory or a VRod, but neither will fit in the garage

You put 4 chambers on one and THEN ride it......!!!
Awesome sound and power delivery.
Sure they are no modern Gixxer but they are quite old now. Never be a 4 cylinder 2 stroke again by the Japs unfort.

I certainly would have one, make mine an RZ (again), not RZV,...I would want the extra 20hp !!

Very nice .. but 12 and a half seems a little steep ... for what is basically a sit-in-the-shed-and-ride-occasionally bike ..

Yeah not exactly my cup of tea, still though would be a nice once & a while bike to clear the cobwebs on:yes:
Though preference would be a NS400R as they were the best handling of bunch at the time just lacked the power compared to the others.

Yeah they were very quick for their day and their size ... I remember watching Honda NSs on Manfield back in the day - they were generally hanging onto the bigger bikes except halfway down the main straight they would start to drop back ... then catch up again in the corners ...

The V3 just doesn't sound as good as the 4-cylinder ring-dings. Very flat drone sound.
Bloody nice to ride though.

Funny thing is the NS400R was rated at about 72hp which is around what the (restricted) RZV puts out.

Reduce the NSR's squish band by 30 thou, and they pulled like a 13yr old school boy.

The power is no biggy though, plenty of cheap powerful bikes around... none of them sound like that though.

If I had money, I'd buy the RZ in a heartbeat.

The one I had seized and it cost the new owner a lot to fix it...

Sounded awesome though... Ah the memories...

Maybe one day...

Divide the PS figure by 1.01387 to get the HP figure ( PS or the full german word perv@#% means Horsepower (basically metric HP) & HP (Horsepower) is the imperial measurement).

Here's a good wee read on the RZV

Pretty good guess then :D

Somwhere I have the tuning blueprints that Yamaha gave to their dealers who were racing it. You could apply it to an RZV too :D

A mate has one in his Lounge, FZR400 USD front, Nikon pipes, Marchini wheels, Aprilia fairing, braced frame, RGV swingarm & suspension linkage. He just needs to get is a bit closer to finished & then I make my move with some cash.

Have a photo at home of 4 RZ or RZV500's all running at the same time on the drive. All were owned by my father, my brother or myself at the same time.

The RZ was essentially an okay bike but not really what it was "sold as" being a racer for the road. I back to backed mine at Puke during a ride day with a real GP bike and ithe RZ was a lardy squishy sofa in comparison. Coming into the hairpin I was concerned about how quick I was changing down, unlike the TZ.... RZ and close ratio box, not really.....

I rode a mates RG500 at one point and didn't like the handling. The RG's had little rims, even smaller than the RZ's for some reason. They never did anything for me at all and I'm a commited stroker fan having only bought my first 4 stroke road bike above 100cc last year (held a licence for 28....).

16 inch front was a pain. One recommendation was to run a 110/90x16 front for a bit taller, bit narrower to reduce the 16 inch front wheel effect.

Brakes were crap because of the anti dive. Difference between the RZ and RZV was jetting ign box and pipes. But I suspect the ign boxes were pretty similar and it was Pipes more than anything.

I sold my father's new in NZ 500 with <5000km 3 years ago for less than the buy now. That one is probably quite a tidy bike, but a bit more than I personally would be wanting to pay. I hope someone buys and loves it though.

Not Dave's mate, but a mate of mine over here has a few strokers.....here're 3 or 4.. he's just finished the RG - next is a Wes Cooley shafty GS1000GS and Yammy TR3 made from RD350B.
