Places to ride round Lower Hutt

Hi guys,

Just trying to get my RM going again - It's currently in pieces after the big end seized the weekend before I moved to Lower Hutt. But hopefully should have it going again soon and am after places to ride close by.

Also some places to teach a beginner to ride would be cool as well.

Any suggests and/or ideas?

Karapoti side entrance into the Akatarawas is good, but might not be close enough, being in Upper Hutt.
Just call the Wgtn Regional Council Hutt office and ask for a permit and they'll send you out one (for free) with a map of the ride area. Be legit AND know where you're going, sweet!

Others might know which firebreaks to ride or the river but the wardens aren't that keen on seeing bikes in there, I think

I'm also in Lower Hutt dude, nothing local apart from Akatarawas - Upper Hutt... although the river banks are very tempting... its not worth loosing your bike over if you get caught.....

The only other place i go is Mungatuk Valley but thats even further away... Pram end of Akatarawas.

Council doesn't allow Motorbikes in the firebreaks......

I did find a mini pit bike track at the bottom of Wainuiomata hill (Wainui side of the hill when driving) just as you come off the hill... left at the round about and then your next left and all the way to the end... but have been told its a no go for big bikes......

Yeah definitely be keen on going riding with a few guys once I get my bike sorted. Haven't really done much in the way of trail rides so will be a bit of learning curve.

Re riding on the river banks. I had been told you could but was a bit skeptical about it.

Pitty there is nothing closer. I guess I've been a bit spoilt over the years - barret rd track was 5min up the road when I lived in Taranaki and had a track on the family farm in Bulls.

Ended up taking my Engine in to the bike shop today not quite as pulled a part as I would have preferred. Needed a rattle gun to get the primary gear nut undone and my rattle gun is still in New Plymouth arrg.

Yeah the stop bank is a no go. The ranger gave me an ear full. As has been said the Karapoti is a great place to ride.

My $0.10 worth: Don't take worn knobbly's up the Karapoti's in winter, the wet clay is like riding on marbles.

Also re Karapoti - if it's rained in the last few days, it's gonna be slipperier than you'd expect. Was in there yesterday and Pram Track has opened up some new mud bogs I hadn't seen before.
The clay on the ridges can put you sideways pretty quickly but if you want an armchair, get a Harley..

Also I personally wouldn't do the Rock Garden/ Devil's Staircase on a heavy bike or late in the afternoon (or even at all).
On the positive side it's got lots of great tracks and berms on the corners to ride up onto and if you can get away midweek like we do then we had 5hrs with no-one else there except the forestry crew on Hydro Valley Rd.

I am not condoning it, nor am I saying it is Legal, but I have seen people with their kids playing on the large grassy area on the left of SH2 after Moonshine bridge.

In fact, it seems to be open to most vehicles but its listed as a Public access road (WOF/REG would apply) but I see people there all the time. Prob not ideal if you want to go flat out and do flips etc

Just out of curiosity do you guys know how far you would get on a tank on a RM125.- I don't want to end up pushing my bike. Haven't done any trail rides on it before - just round tracks so haven't cared.

I've got my bike back together again so weather permitting am hoping to go for a ride around Karapoti somewhere on saturday. How easy is it to get lost in there?

Also I see Kapi Mana Motorcycle Club have a track off Bull Run. Is that open at all at the moment or only in the summer?

Apparently its OK to roar around Wainuiomata's public roads on your unregistered, unwarranted, no chance in hell of stopping in a hurry on nobblies when a kid runs out in front of you, dirt bike so come on over and have a thrash round the streets! Open any time but especially favoured just on dusk!

I used to get around 50-60 kays on my 125 tanks doing trail rides, (35ish if i left the coke on:shutup:).
And alot less on an MX track.

My mate gets around that problem by taping an oilpack with spare premix onto the front of his bike where the headlight would sit if he had one, on top of the mudguard.
About 3 hrs easy riding before gas needed, in my experience.

Nothing new there then! As I kid I used to roar round on my RM400 at will.

Is there any flatish land around to teach someone to ride a bike? Flatmate want to learn to ride and don't know of anything really suitable to teach someone with zero experience.

Are there any beaches that you are allow to ride on?

Reading the thread I see no-one has mentioned the Brooklyn Long Gulley area.
Top of Brooklyn hill, follow the signs to the windmill thingy and drive up there. At the end is a remote control gate with the phone nos written on it - 20 bucks per bike.
No quads, closed when wet (Ithink) and crap when it's windy (you'll find out why)
There's a few trails, a drift track for the boy racers, an mx track and access to south coast if you feel like revving out in soft sand and not getting anywhere quick
