View Full Version : What exhaust to get?

Genie

Was down the shop having a chat today about a new exhaust for my little Ninja. They had this Screaming Demon one fitted to a bike in the showroom, I liked the look of it, loved the sound of it and am almost sold.

What I'm wanting to know is what else is out there, what do you recommend.....I'm knew to all this so extremely ignorant. I have been searching online for what may be available and am just confused.

What do you think?
Who has changed their pipes and what did you get and why?
How does a new pipe affect performance?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

A mate has a chrome/stainless cycleworks slip on for his 2009 Ninja 250, sounds pretty good (for a ninja), and looks nice and shiny.

Wouldnt bother doing it for performance, only for the sound/bling.

Seeing as it's my bike and I'm a vain self centred thing I am looking at it from the looks/sound factor...just someone mentioned that a pipe can enhance performance....what like it could get me an extra k or two.

Not really sure, prob a slight gain in the top, but losing some in the low or mid range. Either way if you "want it" then "get it" :D

The Cycleworks exhaust was ~$400 from memory and took about 15minutes to fit - I'm sure you could find someone to fit it for beer if you weren't inclined to do it yourself.

Save your coin for when you upgrade to a bigger bike, as you won't likely be on the 250 for long.

I found that the Two Brothers cans sounded the best on the EX250's.
They also have a better finish that the Screaming Demons too

Everyone has their opinion and there will be some minor differences between all the pipes. Bikes are much more than a logical or practical purchase, they are an emotional purchase and same for accessories, really.

Short answer is do what makes you happy. Some will tell you you've made the right choice and they look good and sound great, others will tell you you've wasted your money on rubbish. It's just the way life is. Worst thing would be to find the latter comes along afterwards and you then regret your decision and the joy goes out of it. :bye:

dunno what (if any) electrickery the ninja has, but a rejet is SOP when doing a decent exhaust upgrade, figure out if that will be required and factor into you price and or benifits (chances are if it doesn't need a rejet the performance gains will be minimal).

I put a Two Bros on my SVS with excellent sound results and a wee gain in power according to Two Bros dyno charts...

So far I have left the Gixxer in original form. I quite like the quiet ride...

Hmmm.. Somehow the terms "Gixxer" and "quiet ride", well....

I put cycleworks mufflers on my XJ, bike sounded and went better than the originals with no guts in them, not super bling though in painted black with stainless sleeves. They do make some prettier all stainless ones, they are really helpful if you give them a call to have a chat about what you're after.

Hi Genie, over years of reading bike mags, especailly US ones who have money to test stuff - mostly a muffler change makes no difference at all and sometimes makes it worse. When combined with whole exhaust and carb rejet and dynatune some bikes gain something. BUT muffler only is just noise and looks.

BUT subjectively writers admit they thought it was more powerfull as it made more noise!

Spend money on more time with Karel - that will gain most difference!

Thanks all of you.

...the comment about saving my money as I'll want to upgrade soon....not likely. That was something I though very seriously about before I bought a shiny new bike. There is a saying that absolute power corrupts and as I'm easily corrupted I will not be purchasing a more powerful motorcycle in the near future. I've already had my very first ever speeding ticket on the little 250 and I think I'd have some trouble staying legal if I had more power between my legs. The 250 suits me quite nicely and as it's anniversary time, 6R time and just done 7500k we both deserve some treats.

As to which pipe...I'm tending to think along the Two Brothers line so extra wee thanks SloFox and Captain Crunch. I've seen some pics and the Two Brothers has a nice 'look' to it. It's not going to enhance performance it is really about the look and the sound...Image IS Everything!

Correct

At least you're being honest that it's not about making it go better, it's about making it look and sound better. :Punk:

Don't forget to have your needles raised after fitting your can. A very easy and quick job but should be done by a bike mechanic

Indeed....training is where it's at for getting ones' bike to go 'better'...however I don't believe that is why Genie is considering purchasing a can.

Here's one with a TwoBros. I don't know who Sam is, but he's an interesting chap. And a Kiwi.

But unfortunately he crashed, again. His dad isn't going to be happy he said. It wasn't his fault, a Jack Russel ran out in front of him. But the dog's ok.

But it seems Sam has a bigger problem than Jack Russels, as he also has to watch out for mad cows jumping fences and charging him on his bike!

There's more too, even of his mate dropping his new R6. But I've hijacked enough.

I'll have to agree with Tubby there, I know a young fella with one and that pipe, has a nice distinct sound.... I'm trying to talk someone else into getting one for her bike too...not sure of the price tho...
