View Full Version : Pinlock problem

I have two visors for the helmet (Arai Chaser). I swap between clear and tinted depending on conditions, day/night riding etc. I usually swap the pinlock with the visor.

Recently the pinlock shows signs of having a gap between it and the visor when fitted to the clear visor - the soft bead doesn't contact all round despite jiggling it about to get best fit. This means that some fogging is happening between the visor and the pinlock - which kinda defeats the purpose of the pinlock, dunnit?

Maybe this is wear and tear. Maybe the visor has warped a little or maybe summat else altogether...

Anyone else had this problem? What didja do about it?

Ta.

Maybe I am just lazy, but I woulda bought a second pinlock for the second visor.

That would have eliminated this issue.

As it is I would say wear and tear of being removed and replaced might have caused your problem.

But I guess you knew that already

Arent the pins on an offset centre point so you can just turn them around to tighten/untighten the gap?

Hey slofox - I've got a couple of spare arai visors (at least one with a pinblock fitted). They are from an arai viper helmet I worte off a few months ago. I replaced it with a Arai RX7, which uses a different visor, so these visors ares just lying around not being used.

If you want them just let me know, PM me your address and I'll send them to you.

One visor is clear and one is dark smoke (smoke one is bit scratched though but would be good for a track day).

Might help solve your problem.

Ultimately that's the best thing to do but other than that i'd leave the insert on the clear visor for the night riding when fogging more likely.

Damn! You'm is a clever clogs aincha? I nevva knew that!

The pinlock came with the visor and I didn't bother to find out a lot about it. Didn't use it for several months - thought it obscured the vision until I discovered it had a protective film over it...durrrrr

Fanny, your idea would prolly work since the problem is only with one of the visors - the older of the two. We shall see.

In the meantime, I will get a second insert so I don't have to swap back and forth - another good idea I thought. The nice young lady that sells them has offered to have a jiggle around with the current one to see what the story is. I bet she does what you have suggested.

Thanks Fanny, you are a gem! :sunny:

Aunt Fanny is a genius. I have had mine go slack too but just have to tweak the little cam pins. This involves removing the visor from the helmet but no probs. Pinlocks are the shit

I've been having the same problem with my Shoei pinlock. I thought it was just wearing old. Now I know!

Hey SloFox - got your PM - will send the visors (and insert) to you either Friday or Monday (I'm away this wekeend).

I assumed you had tried adjusting the pins - I over tigthened one once and it fogged up due to that.

Best method is to remove the visor and use your fingers (or carefully with pliers if the buggers won't move - so as to not scratch the visor/ insert) to rotate the pin (you only have to adjust one usually). It's pretty obvious when it's right as the insert edge will be snug under the pin. If it is overtightened you will see a bubble where the visor is touching the insert. It easier to get right than it sounds though.

Just a note but the latest SAI visor version has an indent in the end of the pins which mean you can adjust them with a screwdriver - waaay easier.

Did the adjust this morning - and yes, the pins have a screwdriver slot in 'em so very easy indeed to adjust. Fixed it up myself but took in to the helmet girl who agreed that they were all go now. Also bought a second insert for the second visor.

Maybe I should have read the instructions when I got the helmet, huh..? (Instead of chucking them away unread...)

Weird. My pinlock has never been taken off the visor since I got it nine or twelve months ago. There's a good 3mm gap between the two along the bottom edge now, so don't know what causes it.
