The high commander is away next weekend and I have saturday free (not sunday, that's trail ride day) so who wants to do what? :scooter:
I'm on for a ride north or south so either west coast / Raglan / Kawhia or west coast / Helensville / Muriwai / Puhoi.

I can guarantee rain and gravel, bring your own flavour of adventure, all and any (biologically possible) suggestions welcome.

You have until wednesday, that's when I choose a route and post it up. :headbang:

Depends on tide up there I think, also it's a bit of a haul just to get to north head.....I might be persuaded tho, I will have a look at a map & stuff.

The problem with having a few beers then posting......I blame an unreliable calendar!

So far it's two votes for north.

After 9 months of NO income, I have finally found another job (fkn saga that was!) and so I won't have to sell the DR after all. Consequently, I would enjoy an outing and the D606 on the back needs finishing off. However, as you point out, Pouto is a long haul from here, especially with the viaduct down and so, boring as it may be, I would vote south.
However, I suspect the new job may get in the way of me showing up and so my vote may be worthless anyway. Will let you know closer to the time.

Having thought about it I'm leaning towards the north west, Muriwai and a drink at Puhoi, I did Coro a month or so ago and the NBA will take us down the south west coast.
You can get north of the city by coming past my place on SH20...........

Right, I have found myself with less time than planned on Saturday so it's head north west......

8.30am meet at the Riverhead gas station, wander around aimlessly north of there and end up for a late lunch 1.00ish? at the Puhoi pub.
Wander back towards Riverhead after, I need to be home by 3ish.

Simple, lots of the usual gravel roads, let me know if your coming....

Nope - should be OK - we could fill up again in Waitoki or Kaukaps like before, depending on what route we take north. I will prolly take a 5L spare with just in case, so we should be sweet in any case.

A brief update:
Seeing as the newmarket viaduct is actually open until 5pm saturday (great advertising eh?) I will be at the Westgate Shell? station at the top of the north western about 8.15 - 8.30 waiting for Whysper and I will make sure that we finish up early enough that those heading south can still get back down the southern motorway well before the viaduct closes.

I have only a rough plan in mind so am open to suggestions, we could wander up Muriwai beach for a bit or simply stick to gravel roads, let's discuss at Riverhead.

Won't be a problem.......you will wobble around and get the hang of it, it's only half an hour up the beach and it's bound to provide plenty of entertainment.

I have had a number of trips North and South over the last two weeks and I cannot understand why there hasn't been more riders killed in the rush hour! Some of these guys think they are bullet proof, the speeds they do, lane splitting. The indicator light or the hazard light gives them the right to go at 50kph or move from one lane to another and quickly cut in....Geez, it is damn right scary watching them. :shit:

Interesting ride today, only the three of us with Wysper bailing on us after a lil spill on Murawai beach.....

Met up at Shell Westgate & had to wait on Wysper as being new to travelling thru Alk got a lil lost. By the time we got to the station at Riverhead(8:50) there was no one to be seen.

Carried on to Murawai beach where about 10k in Wysper came closer to the sand than he wanted. No damage done but maybe a lil shaken.

Headed to Helensville for a coffee and at the petrol station Wysper said he was gonna cut the ride short and head home(Hamilton) Said his head a lil woozy so with advice to stop often and not to continue should head/vision get worse from Iain we went our seperate ways.

After a little wander up and around Puhoi we stopped for lunch and a brew.

From there a route south thru some more gravel.

Stopped for a ride down Chatham Road but turned back about half way as SOMEONE didn't wanna continue:shifty:

Then off home, all good.

Cheers Iain

Pretty sure the beach was fine.

Looks like the dr has come away fine except for maybe a slight twist of the handlebars. (was going to replace those eventually anyway)

My right shoulder is pretty sore just now, splitting headache, but vision has got a lot better of late.
Might have had a bump to the head I didn't realise at the time.

Thanks for the pics guys, glad no one got one of the DR taking a nap. The KLR vs DR thread would have a field day. :gob:

Clearly soft sand + gravity beats keen but clueless LOL

I think I was going a fair clip when the trouble started, and as this was my first ride on sand I did the wrong things, sat down and tried to slow down too quick! Then I slowed down REAL quick.
As Crisis said, the DR's are good bikes to crash.

Sorry I delayed the ride in the first place too! Still all learning experiences right. Cary and Crisis were awesome in making sure I was alright and then checking I made it through the REALLY SOFT sand on exit.

Glad I made the effort to get up there, even if I did make a bit of a hash of the ride.

No hash was made, you did really well on the sand, you should have seen me the first time I was on sand, it was an ongoing disaster movie! Glad you got home ok and it was good to see you had the sense to call it off early rather than struggling on feeling like crap, you'll be fine next time.

Well, now you will have me to contend with. Feeling a bit battered and bruised today, but everything seems to be working :)

Not even bad enough for a day off work so must not have tried hard enough.

Still glad it wasn't on gravel or the road, I don't think me and the bike would have come off quite so lightly.
