Not really expecting this to work for anyone considering less than 1 days notice, but checked the weather, made the plans and heading away on a 3 day adv ride / fishing trip tomorrow (3/9/2010) if anyone is interested. Getting in a good ride Friday, a full day of fishing on Saturday, and a good days ride on Sunday around some of the lakes and rivers in the area to check out access etc for upcoming opening fishing season (haven't fished this area before)

Friday 12pm : Ride from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo, then head up Macaulay River (16km riverbed track + many water crossings) stay in hut Friday night. (Tent on DOC land if river flow is too high and hut can't be reached).

Pic from previous hunting trip, some of the crossings can be reasonably deep

Saturday : Mostly fishing the north side of Lake Tekapo starting at the Godley River inlet and working down hitting the tributaries. Tent up the night on DOC land near Lake

Sunday : General exploring of local roads checking out some rivers and lakes along the way for upcoming fishing season. Ride back to Chch late Sunday arvo

Weather for Saturday looks great for fishing, Sunday may be a little windy later on but generally good. Might get some interesting weather on Fridays ride down, snow down to 200 meters and a bit of rain, but I little water ain't no biggie right :msn-wink:

If you're keen hit me up...

Good on you for posting the invite, the Macaulay is on the list to do but....
got other plans and not really in to fishing although I think my partner said she use to do it a bit.

I'm sure you'll have another great trip and let us know how it went when you get home.

Cheers mate, yes the Macaulay is an awesome track when river flow allows access, stunning views, topped off by a great hut with an outside fire bath. Last time I rocked back into camp at about 1 in the morning shattered from a long day thar hunting, I jumped into a hot bath with a view of thousands of stars... fricken awesome way to wind up a day!

I won't hold it against you if you're not into fishing :D

thanks for the invite - but kids and wife preclude taking off at short notice at the moment give me a yell in, oh I don't know, 16 or so years - you be careful up there, river might be high (or get high when you are in there) with that front coming through - you sure you don't want to borrow my KLR instead :innocent:

DOH! hope that comment doesn't get this thread relegated to the red zone!

No other takers so I'm signing out, packing up the last of my gear, and off for the weekend. Weather has further deteriorated with a number of weather warnings NZ wide and a good chance of encountering snow, hopefully it is a case of déjà vu as this is a very similar situation to the previous weekends ride...

Rode through some pretty gnarly weather...

To be rewarded with two nice days for riding, fishing and landing 5 fish all up including this beauty...

This was on my wishlist as well, I'm looking at a trip down there in Oct or Nov, so let me know how you get on with the river crossings.
Snow melt is the biggest factor in springtime up there, the river can rise and fall quite a bit, it would be a bugger to be foiled by deep water before getting to the McCauley hut. Mind you, it would be an even bigger bugger to be dewatering a 4-stroke and doing oil changes in the wops.:shit:

Nice fish too, good to see you won't starve in there!
BTW, what are those lakes you were fishing, real nice country in there. Cheers:2thumbsup

G'day
PM'd ADVGD and he hasn't replied - might have got a bit shaky up there (although he was probably far enough away, hopefully) - his power might still be off - but if anyone has got his cell phone can they PM me or give him a ring and post results
Cheers

Cheers again guys for the check up :niceone: it was a pretty wild ride back in the gale force winds on Sunday

River levels pretty good, there were a few deeper sections but the riverbed was quite solid and stable so it was good to ride through...
